I made this ruler stop

If you don't have a ruler stop, you may not know how useful they can be. A ruler stop turns your old steel ruler into a universal layout and measuring tool. It makes repeatable, exact measurements easy and can even be used as a depth gauge.
I took the opportunity to have a go at making a peened rivet connection. Although the finished product looks like a single piece, it is actually made from three pieces of steel that are held together by peened steel pins. After sanding, the pins become almost completely invisible.

Nice to see this being done by hand. It takes me back to having to do all the hand filing and cutting work, despite all the machines designed to make do exactly that, sitting right there teasing us all with their power off ;)

I never really worked with metal and will probably never be on your level, and I also don't aspire to do so. But I've seen a few videos now, and I love it. This seems pretty doable for a starter project. Being a woodworker I already have some of the tools you use here, including a diamondstone. Would a small project like this be doable, or am I underestimating the effort here? I am asking this with the fullest respect and appreciation for your skills.
@imadethischannel
@imadethischannel 3 года назад
I think it is absolutely doable for almost anyone. It took me a few attempts to get it right, too. The more specialized tools you have, the more efficient your work becomes. But if you have the patience, it can be done with very little.

Small suggestion: I would've used medium strength thread locker on all the mating surfaces, to really weld the individual parts together.
@imadethischannel

I actually tried to get the mating surfaces as clean, smooth and flat as possible and was secretly hoping for a bit of solid state diffusion. Not sure if that's realistic though.
