Thanks Marnie. Kristy was most certainly a beginner so it was easy to just teach and answer questions that many beginners would have. We didn't edit out any of her beginner mistakes either as once again if she made them then others would make them. Thanks for the positive comment

Thank you. I found this great. I have been making my own now for a few months. It helped to confirm that I have been going about it correctly. I have also bought the majority of my supplies from you & found them excellent. I have a couple of questions...1. Does a small amount of frosting affect the quality of the burning or aroma quality of the candle? 2. Is a lid necessary for any other reason other than for looks and to keep dust free? 3. Do the soy candles have a 'use by time' prior to burning? Cheers Karen
@aussiecandlesupplies
@aussiecandlesupplies 7 лет назад
Frosting does not affect the burn whatsoever and is a sign your soy wax is 100% with no unnatural additives. It can be minimised by not leaving your candles out in the cold weather overnight. Put them back into a box after they have set. Soy does not like temperature fluctuations. Lids are cosmetic only and server no other purpose to the candle soy candles do not have a 'use by time' I have candles i made years ago and they still burn perfectly and still smell just as strong. the surface smell will disappear but once it is burning the smell will return

okay i just made candles from a kit i got from you guys and the written instructions are different to the video so now im scared my candles will come out bad. so if anyone can answer these questions please!! *the written instructions say when the wax is melted completely and at 80 degrees C then i can take it off heat and add the measured out fragrance (in the video it was added around 75- I added mine at 80). * in the written instructions it said to pour the wax at 70-65C (the website said the pour point for my wax- KW 4130 Container Soy- was 45-45c) but if i was to use the wax in the video id pour it at 70C? please help!
@aussiecandlesupplies
@aussiecandlesupplies 4 года назад
the video was made using GW 464 wax not the kerax wax supplied in the kit. You have done nothing wrong and the kerax wax responds better to hot pour temperatures so pouring at 70 is good. Pour temperature can be changed and adjusted to suit the climate where you live. It also will need to be adjusted for some fragrances as some respond better to hotter pour temps whilst others like cooler pour temps. This is all the fun of candle making and learning all about the different subtleties.

Very informative. Thank you :) How do you work out how much fragrance to use?
@aussiecandlesupplies
@aussiecandlesupplies 5 лет назад
Thank you. Fragrance load is a bit of simple maths. Take the weight of your wax and multiply it by the percent you want to use. Eg - 100gms of wax multiplied by 10% is 10mls or 10gms of fragrance.

@@aussiecandlesupplies Hi and thank you for the video. But, you have confused me, since I am a stickler for detail. 10mls and 10 gms is not the same for fragrance oils, as others are slightly heavier and others a little lighter and that the math was to go by weight and not confuse the mls with the gms since the wax is calculated in Grams for the container. i.e. a container has 200ml capacity, an average number dependent on the wax conversion, since everything is done in grams, we convert 200mls that equals 200gms of water, the percentage for wax is between around 77% - 92 % of water, since wax is lighter, so for that 200ml it would be 200 * 0.86 (average weight) = 172grm needed for wax. Now, this is unscented wax, so now, if we want to add some fragrance, that would be: 172 * 8% = 13.76 grms = 185.76 total. So, that would bring very close to overflowing or overflowing if that 200ml was up to the lip. Now since it is weight, we can work a little backwards, 160 * 8% = 12.8gr of fragrance oil, so 160+12.8=172.8grm. So that is close enough. Unless I am doing something wrong, please correct me. I am still new after all, but I love learning everything I can before starting something since I would like to minimize any errors from the start and have good foundations. p.s. I love all the tips that you provide here 😎
@aussiecandlesupplies
@aussiecandlesupplies 2 года назад
@@borisjevic6338 no wonder you are confused based on how complicated your comment is. You are confused and complicating it all by reading too much information on google and forums. Some fragrances are 10ml = 10gms and most are very close, some of the heavier Vanilla's like the French Vanilla we stock is not though. Most scales bought on the mainstream market are also not very accurate in small amounts, the same can be said for thermometers offered. There is no correct amount of fragrance for a soy candle ie 6% is not the standard as is 8% or 10% not a standard fragrance load that is needed to be rigidly stuck too, the video is a simple how to make a candle without confusing customers. Burn the candle under controlled conditions and decide if you need more or less fragrance from there, each fragrance wax combination being so different means there is no set fragrance load once you are at an individual fragrance level. BTW no need to have a percentage weight for wax with such a large variable, if you want to use grams for the amount of wax and fragrance added then 87% is the percentage you are looking for since we are talking about soy wax. Don't worry too much about overflowing, this comes with experience working out your jars you use and the amount they hold to the perfect fill point, remember not everyone's perfect fill point in a jar is the same. When I calculate the amount of wax/fragrance a jar holds I fill it to the point where I want it to be not to the top as it's not a tea light or moulded candle. As an example, for a jar like the Cambridge jar we offer, 300gms capacity to the fill to the point we like. You would use 275gm wax and 22ml of fragrance, if you were weighing the fragrance, you need 22gm, this 22gm can mean 20-24ml of fragrance depending on the viscosity but in most instances the variable of difference is less than 1ml higher or lower. In order to keep the process simple and that scales used by most candle makers are not that accurate the difference between weighing and measuring is not worth it for the average candle maker. This all adds to mastering each fragrance with test burning and notes rather than relying on a formula that does not exist.

@@aussiecandlesupplies Hi and thank you for taking time to reply. In regards to the scale, I actually have a jewelers pocket scale from a couple of years ago when I use to go prospecting for gold and gems here in Victoria. But then, I know it is trial and error and have done a couple of trials with 8% as average that turned out great from my sons friends. Now just need to use good "self trimming" wicks 😉 and use proper "wax" instead of what came in the online ebay starter kit (supposedly beeswax) but it was our first try and we both enjoyed it very much. So much so, that he "accidentally" burned a candle that was to be given as sample for feedback 😇❤️😁. Thank you so much for everything you are doing and keep up the good work.

@aussiecandlesupplies

HI Rexy that is very dependant on the type/brand of wax you are using and brand of fragrance you are using. We recommend anywhere from 6-12% fragrance oil in GW 464 and 6-10% essential oils. Make sure you measure out your fragrance, don't guess. Let your candles cure for a few days before burning and make sure the room size you are burning in is appropriate for the size candle you have made. Some fragrances will also throw stronger than others. For example our Five fragrance is so strong you only need around 6% however some others are more subtle.

Hi cynthia, the most accurate way to get the correct amount is to weigh, otherwise you do not know how much fragrance to add. The only other way I can think of is to pack flakes into the glass you want until its full then melt that down and see how much it comes to in liquid.

Hi. I made my first candle just like your video from the ingredients I got in the kit from your website. I’ve let it sit for 2 weeks and burning it for the first time and it’s not burning to the edge and just in the middle. Can you tell me what the issue is please?
@aussiecandlesupplies
@aussiecandlesupplies 2 года назад
HI Monica, it can be a number of issues. Usually the main one is a sink hole. It's winter and this happens a lot. Secondly the wick may be slightly too small so you may need to wick up. This is why it is important to test burn. Wicks are suggestions only to give you a starting point. Every fragrance and dye combination will affect the burn and may require different wick sizes. As it is burning only in the middle it sounds like a sink hole.

@@aussiecandlesupplies thank you, I left it in the cupboard on a rack. Which wick size do you recommend I buy? I got given the black jars and my email says the wick is “10xcdn 12 wicks” that is the wick I’ve used. I also used peony fragrance and lavender colour dye. Also what is a test burn please? I’m very new to this

@@monicaprocenko3655 go up one size depending on how much it is tunnelling. Try a cdn 14. If you plan on making alot of candles its a good investment to buy a 'sample' pack of wicks as then you have all sizes on hand to test with. Every candle you make needs to be tested to make sure you have the right wick selected (just as you have been doing) as you have found sometimes you need a different wick or fragrance percentage. Everytime you change a fragrance you should test burn it to make sure it burns correctly and cleanly

@aussiecandlesupplies
@aussiecandlesupplies 5 лет назад
what percentage of fragrance are you using? Tea lights are very tiny candles so the throw is not going to be great to start off with. Couple this with the fragrance you are using and that could be your issue. Not every fragrance is a strong thrower as not everyone wants an overpowering candle. You need to find specific fragrances that have a strong throw - our 'Five' for example.
