Make a speed reduction box for your power tools with a car starter. An easy hobby job that can gain you additional benefits of metal cutting from a wood band saw. Why fool with double or triple belt reductions to get your woodcutting band saw to cut metal. Here I tear down a scraped out automotive starter and make a useable gear speed reduction box for my old Craftsman wood cut band saw. It now cuts metals like a champ!

Been thinking about making some different pulleys for the belt drive on my dewalt chop saw to slow the blade down and this gives me a few ideas. Not a lot of room for a large pulley but this might work on the blade shaft. Cool project nice work!

When driving the sun gear and taking output from the planet carrier, the total reduction is the ring gear tooth count divided by the sun gear then add 1. If the sun-to-ring is 6:1 the total is 7:1. the reason is that the carrier orbits and that counts as an extra turn. Just something to keep in mind. Also, many starters have plastic ring gears inside.

Quite so.. Rahe than do the math, if you turn the input shaft 5 times to 1 rotation of the output shaft you get.... Yes, some do use plastic, but go figure the torque/hp put through them and compare it to what the load you expect to have on the application you have. My first one has a plastic ring gear and five years later is still cranking away. You could always dumpster I've at a big truck or equipment shop and get a way heavier starter if you really want a crusher reduction gear. Don

Justin was my uncle he died when I was 3 years old and he has been a big inspiration to me with stories and stuff and my mom her brother found your video and now I can see this

Ayden, your uncle was a heck of a guy. Even at such a young age he commanded a lot of respect and touched a lot of people with his good heart and deeds. I could tell you really funny stories about him and am glad that your family keeps him alive. His memory will always be with me in my shop every time I set foot out there. I make sure of that as you've seen. Don

@@donsengine3158 I appreciate that a lot I don't have a lot of memories of him idk if you knew my mom (Kristen) and my grandma (Angela) but they say I'm a lot like him personality wise

@@aydenmoore5069 I think I met Angela one briefly. I knew bot Kristen and you s Justin was always keeping us up on goings on. If you were lucky enough to end up with a personality like Justin, then you got to be a heck of a good guy. If you're ever in Florida, come on over.

Now that's thinking outside the box. 😁 I have a couple of barrels of old starters I need to check now because this is something I've wanted to do for a while now. I was disappointed in Mr. Petes series when he gave up but this looks very doable. I have one of those King Sealy Craftsman 12 inch saws that I restored just waiting for this mod. Thanks for the video!

@@donsengine3158 Great vid for people on finding stuff they can use. A while back I saw a vid from on guy who gets most of his raw stock from car wreckers. He pointed out that a lot of things like suspension rods and sway bars are made from decent material than can be machined. Now you have given people something else to grab from old cars. *EXCELLENT* I wonder what's possible cut cut from an old cast engine block. Its all destressed after all those years???

@@tonywilson4713 I pull a lot of god metal off vehicles. Nissan Pathfinders have very nice torsion bars that make great turning material.

Geat idea using a starter. I work at a shop where we build/prototype equipment for people with disabilities and I used the gearbox from expired electric wheelchairs. (it also has an electro magnet break, 24volt)
