April 2024 in Spain: i need to fence my property, but not allowed to use chainlink ( the Mayordom has decided to declare my region a tourist 'wild' designation. So i am basically having to be Disneyland for the toirists, but no reimbursement for fencing. Thinking of using the split rail technique, but obviously not investing that kind of effort in splitting oak. We have lots of oak, but i would not use it for hhe turists. Rather, we also havetons of snagly pines here, and we do have to cut them, about 15-20cm diameter, to thin them out or else our millennial olive trees get crowded out,and dwindle bcs of too much shade. Can I use the same construction technique or will i encounter problems? About how long will such log fences out of young pine will last?

Rob, nice! Consider cleaning up those well used wedges to remove the " mushroom" top edges. Fragments can come.off like a bullet injuring you or a bystander. I have a small shop where I can either use a hack saw and or grinder to dress off those edges.

Rob, loved the video and have some questions. Does this style rail fence have a name? And, when laying out this fence, what is the normal length of the horizontal rails and what angle are sections of rails to each other? Thanks
@hobbitreet
@hobbitreet 3 года назад
It is called a snake rail fence. Not sure the angles. I use 12 foot rails.

Great tutorial, ty! I know this thread is old, but wondering if anyone can answer a general question about when to split? Should the process be done only when logs are seasoned or does green timber work ok as well?
@hobbitreet
@hobbitreet 3 года назад
Red Oak can be done about anytime, that is my favorite. Locust is best when green. Forget Hickory, it is a nightmare anytime. Pine when a couple of years seasoned.

@@hobbitreet any thoughts on maple or ash? That’s mostly what we have access to and plan to drop this spring.
@hobbitreet
@hobbitreet 3 года назад
@@jenwhitedesigns Ash is amazingly great to work with. I've tried sugar and silver maple, but found that it rotted so fast it was not worth my time. One thing I would mention, I've been asked several times who made the fence at our and my mom's house, it is a great feeling to tell folks that I did so.

Would a fence like this work for goats?
@klondike108
@klondike108 2 года назад
This is a mostly decorative fence. Goats would likely go through or over it.

safety first but ears doesn't matter for you just tissue is enough.

Not wanting to argue, I get the same level of protection from tissue and can discard after each use.
