Nick I found your video's by accident ... I am glad I did, you explain everything in simple terms without the EGO of most bowyer's. Thank you , Your videos are the BEST!!!!
Hello Nick I've been watching you for years. started making pvc bows with some of your earlier videos. Big fan. I would like to see you make an ARROW replica bow with the arrows he had on the island. Thanks
Glad to see Flint Knapping Friday is back in action. As for suggestions.....you can never go wrong letting us watch you knap and explain how you're reducing a particular piece of rock. Thanks for your helpful work!
Question for you Nick. The copper boppers you use in your primal dagger series. Who sells those? I like the ergonomics of the handle and would like to order a set.
I've made several flakers like this. I found it helps to grind the tip of the nail to shape with a belt sander/angle grinder until it changes color. Softens the steel and helps reduce slipping.
Haven't seen you for a while.....missed you. Good to have you back. You always seem to come up with the easiest way to do something without all kinds of expensive tools. Something I greatly appreciate. Loved your PVC bows, file knives and these tools. Tried all of them and they work (I just can't yet make a descent field point....I just make a pile of smaller stones), I like to see a bottle bottom point being made someday. keep up the good work.
If you can't find copper nails, you can usually get 4 or 6 gauge solid copper wire at a hardware store. Or if you're feeling naughty you can also find this size wire used as grounding wires on wooden power poles.
can you make a video about making bamboo arrows, I was given bamboo shafts as a gift, but I've never used them before, so I don't really know how to, I'm trying to make hunting arrows
+shade_grey Aluminum rods are my favorite, but they wear down even faster than antler. I may do a video on those soon. You don't have to anneal the nails, but you could and it would help with grip. Thanks for watching!
Or drill a hole the size of your nail into the dowel use a hack saw or a dremil to cus off the top glat part of the nail. Use sandpaper or a knife and score slach routghen the nail fill the hole in with glue push the nail in and wioe of exess glue
Great video Nick, I think I'm going to give that a try this weekend. Is flint the only rock to go for or can one use other types of rock? I'm down here in New Mexico so I can find Obsidian I'm sure, but just curious if other rocks work.
+Aaron Craig Awesome! If you can get obsidian, it is a great material to start out with. It's a lot easier than starting with flint or chert. Just make sure to keep band aids on hand. Thanks for watching!
This whole time ive just been using a hog leg femur as my hammer to drive certain flakes off. I may take on this idea as I often smash my hand using my technique. Tho I want antlers. Be as natural as I can.
+Boblo You can try searching online to see if obsidian or flint can be found in your area. Any local rock or lapidary shops should be able to either sell stone or point you in the right direction. If not, there are places online you can get stone. I like ordering from Craig Ratzat at Neolithics.com as he has a good selection and pretty reasonable prices and shipping. I also like to walk creek beds with a copper bopper. If I run across a rock that looks like it might be knappable, I'll give it a whack to see if it flakes well. I've found a lot of nice jasper and agate this way. Hope this helps!
There's a website called Neolithics which sells 'blanks' for flint knapping out of the stone of your choice as well as selling large chunks of said stones for flint and steel fire making. Their snowflake and blood obsidian are beautiful and their English gun flint is some hard, tough stuff.
@@weaponkid1121 Bottle glass for beginners. See utube for how to get the bottom to break loose in tact. Obsidian....its relatively inexpensive. Try your local rock shop for slabs. Opalized petrified wood knaps easily but is more expensive. Chert, flint. agatee and jasper need to be cooked. Otherwise, they're tougher than the nails you knap with. I can send you a box of obsidian spals for about 20$ and that includes postage. I would email you a photo of the exact pieces before sending them to make sure you liked them. My email is winnievanorden@gmail.com
BackyardBowyer Rajah dat!!! I'll keep checking your etsy page for um. I wouldn't mind running one of your pendants here in the 808. Gottah support the local boys you know. Cheee!!! Aloha my braddah!!!!
Copper is softer and tends to grip the material better. Steel sometimes slides and does not grip as easily. Steel is fine if your abrade your piece well and it lasts much longer. Copper wears down pretty quick.
