Love it. I just found my next, next next, project. You know, when I've finished the things I'm already working on. I can just see someone after I'm dead and gone. You know when they're selling all of my stuff at the "estate sale" and someone see's the mallet and says "I just has to have it". I know I would, thanks for posting.

Your Mallet project really appealed to me since I use to work with plumbing fittings almost every day in the job I retired from. I would like to make one with bigger hitting surfaces. Great job Chris!
@TheChrisPineWorkshop
@TheChrisPineWorkshop 9 лет назад
Saw Dust Maker You certainly could make the striking pads larger! My only thought was the larger around they are the less support outwards the edge and you are striking on end grains so you have the increased possibility of the piece "splitting off". But yes there is room for larger! Thanks for watching. Chris

Love it Chris, great video as usual. Now try making some more heads out of some South American Iron Wood if you think that Oak is hard. The Iron Wood is like trying to work ...well Iron of coarse, Burned up three belt sanders on the stuff years ago just trying to smooth it out enough to see the wood grain. and also burned up a carbide tipped saw blade trying to cut it, it was actually sparking before the blade got so hot it warped. I know you would just love working with it if you ever get your hands on any of it. I recently acquired another chunk of it but chose this time to work it on a milling machine, cut through it like butter no problem.

Nice idea. Not sure the thread will hold if its used with force. A bit of epoxy to glue it might help. I think brass would look fantastic. Also, other sizes would be possible. I might try this one day. Thanks for sharing.

As far as wood mallets go, is it best to have a perfectly flat striking surface or a slight crown on both ends ? I've always wanted a mallet but just used my handy hammer for the past 50 years, just lazy I guess. Nice job !

Great project. I was really looking forward to seeing some footage of you threading the white oak into the galvanized steel. I get how you accomplished the twisting force, but how did you apply the force pushing the wood into the fitting? Just elbow grease?
@TheChrisPineWorkshop
@TheChrisPineWorkshop 9 лет назад
Jason Bourdon Thanks Jason! I regretted that I did not shoot footage of that.. I realized when I was done . To start it actually did not take all that much pressure, just try to start the wood strait and once it starts you just keep turning the wood! Worked better than I anticipated. Thanks for watching! Chris

Very neat idea. Looks like a good confidence-boosting project for a beginner (like myself). Question... Why not go ahead and apply the Danish Oil while the piece was still on the lathe?
@TheChrisPineWorkshop
@TheChrisPineWorkshop 8 лет назад
+Brad Taylor you certainly could do that but the end I had to clean up (sand) after it was parted off and removed form the lathe.Chris

Hi Chris! Great project mate! I was thinking that you might add some steel balls or ammunition in the T fitting and you would have a sort of dead blow effect :) Although they probably will not travel that much from side to side. Anyway, really cool idea! Cheers! Daniel

Chris, nice video and nice mallet, too. I think you said you filed the grooves in all three threaded sections. I am wondering why.....could not you just groove ONE of them, then use that section as the die for the heads and the handle? Thanks.

I suppose you could do that yes. Now your thinking! :) I did all three and put them in and left them in. But very good point. They are all the same size. :)

Couple thoughts. It might have been good to mention what dia. you turned the trunion down to? Also, Even thou your process shows it, you might indicate that be good to tread the pipe on before parting the short pieces. That would give better holding power while threading on. Thanks again for sharing..

Биток надо больше по диаметру сделать. Думаю так.
@AlfFisher
@AlfFisher 9 лет назад
Сергей Дубровин 3/4" ( Ф 27 мм) - действительно небольшой диаметр для молотка, но все зависит от выполняемых задач. При желании можно взять и больший тройник на 1" (33 мм), и сами битки выточить с расширением.

A lot of people will fill the void in the T-fitting with lead shot, lead weight, or sand to give the mallet more heft to let the mallet itself do more of the work and your muscles less work.
@DickCheese182
