At the end of almost every trip to the store, I end up with a pocket full of change that I save in a jar. It definitely works, but as a maker I think I can do better than an empty Target brand trail mix jar.
I wanted to make a piggy bank that anybody would be proud to display, and have fun using as well. I knew I wanted something in the shape of an animal but I didn't want a standard pig, dog, or cat. I wanted something that would keep my money safe that no one dared to mess with. Anybody can get past a guard dog, but no one messes with a TREX!
This project was a ton of fun to make, although I had several set backs and challenges along the way. When I first started woodworking I would cut all of my pieces with the jigsaw as that was all I had available at the time and I wanted to get back to my roots. The cuts I was getting from the jigsaw were absolutely terrible. The blade was deflecting a ridiculous amount, After a few tries I had to give up on it entirely.
I switched over to my bandsaw to finish the cuts, but I didn't have a thin enough blade to maneuver around the tight areas, especially the mouth and teeth. I was determined to get this project done so I persisted knowing the ungodly amount of filing I would have to do later. To make matters even worse, it was consistently over 90 degrees in the shop and I was POURING sweat.
I designed the coin slot with a dremel in mind and I envisioned a clean channel route. I know it's not necessary to have an immaculate route in a place no one would ever see, but I am a bit of a perfectionist and wanted a tidy route. So when I fired up the dremel to set up the depth, I was shocked and saddened when it would just shut off after a few seconds of run time. Could it be that the shop was so hot that it was overheating?
Not wanting to slow down on the progress I was making I switched over to a cheap trim router. As I was unprepared for this I didn't have any bits on hand that were suitable for the task at hand so I reluctantly used the only bit I had on hand, a 1 1/2 in pattern bit. This was less than ideal and the route reflected that.
Other minor challenges were the template holding on too firmly, the bandsaw blade being too small for my bandsaw, the finish I wanted to use being out of stock in 3 of the stores I went to, the screws I ordered coming in later than expected, just to name a few.
The reason I listed all of that above is to show that it is just a normal part of the making process. You're gonna fail, something is gonna break, you're going to run out of something right as you need it most. Even with all that you can still have fun. There were parts of this project I hated, but I still had fun and now I have this amazing thing to show for all of the frustration and hard work.
