How to make a t-shirt quilt. In this tutorial I show how to prepare the t-shirt for quilting and also how to square up the shirt after the stabilizer has been put on. Making a t-shirt quilt is a lot of fun, but be forewarned that they are very heavy and you need to take breaks.
Making this t-shirt quilt, I cut my blocks to 15" squared. You can make them any size for a t-shirt quilt, it just depends on how big the design is. I also squared up my border piece to 4" and I cut my binding strips 2.5" wide, then ironed them in half. The finished quilt size is Queen Size at 66" X 82"

Thank you, Darci! Yes, you could use both t-shirts and sweatshirts, just be sure to use stabilizer and be forewarned that it will be very heavy. 😊

I have some shirts and would love to have one made for my son but I am afraid I will mess it up wish I could get you to make it for me. That one was beautiful. I don't understand how you do the banding where it is on front and back and the border.

Hi Rochelle- At this time I wouldn’t be able to make a t-shirt quilt. We are getting to close to the holidays and I have a lot of projects that I have going that need finishing. I am flattered though. 😊 I don’t know anyone in our area that would be interested. Feel free to ask in the group, I think that might be the best place. As far as the 2.5” strip die, I don’t think it works in the GO Baby, but you can check on AccuQuilts site and it should be able to tell you what fabric cutter that die is compatible with.

I use 906F....it is just a bit lighter. TShirt Quilts are heavy as it is. Therefore, I like to use something just a bit lighter to help keep the weight down.

Hi, I'm very new to sewing. I have done it before, but always needed help on certain things.Well My father sewed all my things, but passed when i was 14, I should have had him teaching me. I'm going to follow everything in your video. I was wondering if you had any preferences regarding a sewing machine? I am going to buy one for this project. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Piper- I am so glad that you’re here. I would recommend getting a machine that has a walking foot. Most brands have them included with the machine, however, there are some that don’t. Just make sure it’s noted in the contents. 😊 Happy Quilting and Sewing! 🧵

Does the stabilizer make the quilt stiff?

Hi Janet- No, the stabilizer used is different than embroidery stabilizer. It’s much softer and still stabilizes the knit fabric.

Pam- I'm sure it is possible. I have not made one that way as I think it might be difficult with how stretchy the t-shirt fabric is. It might be something really cool to try though.

I would like to know the same. And whether it’s a rag quilt or not, if they are old t-shirts, is there a good method to remove the ‘balling’ on the shirts?

Ashley- I'm sure it is possible. I have not made one be difficult with how stretchy the t-shirt fabric is. It might be something really cool to try though.
