This is part 2 of my tutorial on how to make an 8 inch reflector telescope. In part 1 I showed you how to make the OTA or optical tube assembly (The red tube part). In this part of the tutorial we make the mount that holds it (The blue part).
This is a unique and very effective design I call “The Cabinet Mount” telescope because it is also a small cabinet that will hold your various telescope and astronomy things like eyepieces, barlow lenses, astronomy magazines and anything else. It keeps it all organized and in one place for you.
You don’t need any particular skills to make this telescope mount. Just some simple tools, some wood and a few other parts. I explain to you exactly what you need and how to do it.
Wonderful little telescope that is portable, easy to use and easy to make. I like it! It is the Cabinet Mount Telescope!
The main bearing that rotates the telescope is called a lazy susan and it is readily available in many styles. The one I use is sturdy and cost me around eleven dollars. The white things you see that the telescope moves up and down on are simple pvc pipe fittings you can buy at the home depot or Lowes.
The web tutorial is on my website here:

Cool tutorial. One thing that would have been good to mention is the importance of having a dust cover over the end of the tube whenever the telescope is not being used

Very clear explanation of how to make a simple scope. For anyone contemplating this I would say the secondary mount looks very simple with no ability for adjustment. That makes construction easy but could cause issues unless you get it right first time. The legendary late John Dobson did similar using shims of wood so it must be possible if you are patient. Using this method and at ~f3.6 such a scope would be OK for wide field views of star fields, perhaps bigger nebulae and galaxy hunting but certainly not planetary observation. Love the under scope cupboard for accessories, that's very handy.

I'm an Astronomy college student, I have a project for my major, I need to make a telescope, but I don't know where to buy 8 inch concave mirror. I ask mirror shops in my city but they only have convex mirror. I only have $10 budget to buy one concave mirror. (sounds crazy).

Thanks for great video. The telescope works great. Only modification I made was to make main mirror quick release. Mirror sores in a box when not in use or in transit and easier to keep clean. Just slotted holes in tube to edge and locks in with wing nuts. Surprisingly good pictures when using telescope with digital camera. It really good for this. Now built a 14" one but the 8" a solid backup with camera. Love it.!

Love this! I like the way you made the side bearing tensionable with those shims to get the right movement up and down. Do you think there would be a way to add something similar to keep the lazy susan part from moving too easily? Great project, and I think I know what I'm making next - 6" mirror set already here!

@toml.8210 3 года назад
these videos are a good example that most people could build a reflector telescope, using optics (mirrors, focuser, eyepieces) from a telescope supplier. However, Those plastic tube bearings and 'lazy susan' will eventually cause you a LOT of grief, which is why Mr. Dobson chose the Teflon bearings for the scope side and base bearings, and they work the same for a 6-inch mirror or a 16-inch mirror. You can move the scope with a 1-finger push. Ball bearings are meant for high-speed rotation, not once-per-minute micro-adjustments. The tall cabinet & mount will eventually fall over, so you need to move weight down low, use Teflon tube bearings (2 for each side) and 3 Teflon bearings to replace the lazy-susan. A doubled 3/4 ply base with 3 feet will sit well on almost any surface, so the 4-wheeled base is only good for a smooth or concrete surface. Please move the scope away from the door, unless you want to pick it up from the floor after someone pushes the door open.

Awesome idea on the cabinet holder!! However, I would have made the lazy-susan cradle holder part taller SO THAT WHEN you store the telescope you can point the open end down thus avoiding dust accumulation on the mirrors. I understand weight balance but there could be some type of 'seatbelt' to keep it from tipping over.

Why are so many people asking this question ? It is going to see it as good as any other 8" dobsonian (so Yes) He's using purchased optics , which are really good and cheap these days. After that , it's just about how well you line them up ... which his fine tune adjustments are plenty good. The cabinent stand is a bit of a weak point imo , that could make steady images tough , but not impossible. So imo , I would get a mirror with a longer focal length so the support base would sit on the ground . Guessing he has an F4 mirror ? So I would get an F6 , plus it has a higher magnification range ... Cuz me likes more X power ;) hehe Albeit the image gets dimmer ;( ... so a shorter focal length will give you brighter images , which I guess was his choice of personal preference .

Whoops, that base peice is not 1/2, it's 1". It would be good to glue those peices before you put the screws it--makes it stronger. As for the wheels, it might be better to have two of them non-swivel. One more thing is that this needs a cover for the tube, as dust will start coating the mirror.
