In this video I'll show you how to build the Hadley Newtonian Telescope. This is a fun open source project that you can build yourself. Powerful enough to see the rings of Saturn, Jupiter's moons, and craters on the moon. Aperture 114mm. Focal Length 900mm

If you are the true Maff, I feel like this is a rare opportunity to thank you for designing this. I completed the print / build process after finding it on Thingiverse and it has completely blown away family and friends with the results. I knew absolutely nothing about telescopes before the build other than that I wanted one but didn't know where to start. This scope is hands down one of the coolest things I've ever had and I use it on almost every clear night. The fact that no supports or special knowledge are needed for any of the prints is astounding and a testament to your design.

I made this whole project to increase access to astronomy (and as a response to the predatory scopes stores sell-- underperforming and overpriced), and I have been absolutely floored by the spread/adoption. Glad to hear everyone is finding the prints easy, as well. I think the components of FDM-design are often overlooked!

Is this capable of measuring arc seconds? If so what is the error range (sensitivity). My purpose is make a telescope that is sensitive to an arc second and can include a tube that can be filled with water. Ideally that the water filled tube can be swapped in and out on the fly instead of in a labor intensive manner that takes a long time. I would be grateful for any suggestions and /or pointing me to further readings. Sincerely - Thank you for your time and consideration.

A really nice video of the Hadley assembly process. If you're going to be swapping eyepieces or adjusting focus much, you might want thumbscrews for the screws on the focuser so you can make them tight or loose without needing a screwdriver, but I'm linking this places as a great assembly guide reference!

Shaff was here. Have a lookat my Mirror. EM Drafter/Designer goin' for 1st BS Physics. Now if you look up Popes Telescope Spray on Coating, I think some different shapes of Mirrors can be tested like a Hyperbola.

I just heard about the Hadley from a coworker and am thinking about building it. Do you think with an adaptor, and something to compensate for the weight, a DSLR camera would work with it? I'm pretty new to astronomy

As printed it won't hold a DSLR. I have built a counter weight and am working out the bugs now. The counterweight is required for this use. I do recommend building this project as it's a lot of fun and you can see incredible detail of the moon and other objects.

@@wizardeddas Keep in mind that (most) DSLR's have IR filters, so you won't be able to capture all available "light"

You're welcome, I'm glad it helped. Yes you can spend more for higher quality mirrors. Just make sure they have the focal length specified in the project.

Thank you so much for this as I started the print this past weekend. Quick question is I still have to print the knobs and Spider. The issue is on the Creality when and how do you pause it to put the nuts in. Like at what point in the print?

Yes you need to embed nuts in the spider. Here is a tutorial on how to embed nuts with an Ender ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hWBTXfL_F5I.html Also, the knobs with embedded nut are so handy, I would say they are required. It's a lot easier to align the mirror with embedded nuts. Open your slicer and slice the spider or knob and then scroll up and down until you can find the spot just before where the nuts are enclosed. Here is where you place the custom G-code to pause the print. See the tutorial for details.

@@MyEngineeringProjects thank you so much for your quick response. After research I found out my Ender 6 does no support mid print pauses by GCode. So I will have to find time I can sit by it and manually do it.

Basically after you slice it go to preview (I'm using Cura) and move the slider on the right until you get to the point where you insert the nut. Note the layer number. Then go to "post processing" and pick "pause at height", choose layer, from there you should be able to figure it out.

I've read that you shouldn't polish the mirrors like that because it will accumulate tiny scratches in the polished aluminium surface.

Yes that would be the case if i were touching the reflective surface. In this case however I am just cleaning the glass in front. The mirrored surface is on the back underneath the glass. It is constructed similar to a bathroom mirror.

@@MyEngineeringProjects I've never before heard or seen a telescope mirror that wasn't a first surface mirror. Regular mirrors that have the reflective surface under the glass cause double images due to internal reflections.

I haven't heard of a telescope mirror not having the top aluminized. The light passing through the glass, reflected back out through the glass again would cause a mess of the lightwaves.

I had a couple of different versions. One of them was just a knob that I used as a friction device against the wheel. That wasn’t too bad. I also tried a rod with a clamp and that seem to be more stable

Little taken aback by the seeming lack of awareness of the Mirrors . These are usually First surface mirrors with a vacuum deposited Aluminum reflective layer. Molecules thick.... Wiping the surface doesn't just scratch the mirror.... it Removes ! ....the mirror layer.

I print with PLA and use a few custom settings. Print: .3 mm layer 30% infill Temperature Nozzle first layer 215, other 203 degrees C Bed first layer 65 others 60 degrees C

How do you focus Hadley? Do you adjust the distance between UTA and LTA? Or do you adjust the poker?I made it, but it's out of focus..

When you first put it together, put the eyepiece focuser in the middle. Put the LTA near the bottom of the scope. Loosen the UTA screws and look through the eyepiece. Move it up and down until you can see an image. Best to do this in the daytime pointing at a distant object. Now when you get an image, then you tighten the screw and adjust the fine focus with the knob.

Would a 40mm eyepiece Improve the image or is the 23mm the standard calibrated eye piece?

The number there is the focal length of the eyepiece. The magnification of the 'scope is the focal length of the full scope (900mm) divided by that of the eyepiece. So a 23mm eyepiece gives a more magnified view of a smaller part of the sky. 900/23 = 39x, 900/40mm = 22.5x. If you want a tighter and more magnified view, you actually want a _shorter_ focal length eyepiece, like a 10mm or even a 6mm (shorter than 4mm is a little problematic with this size of 'scope).

To go on a bit more, not all eyepieces of the same focal length do the same thing--they're all basically taking the light fed them by the primary mirror and presenting it to your eye with various optical wizardry, but the way the glass/plastic lenses in the eyepiece work will make them better or worse at it. A 23mm aspheric works okay, but very short focal length aspherics are troublesome, so for a 6mm something like what gets marketed as a "goldline" eyepiece is better.

As far as improving the image is concerned, in general the less magnification results in a sharper image. An image from a 40mm eyepiece would be pulled back from a 22mm and the image would be smaller.

50X the mirror's diameter in inches will be the THEORETICAL limit of useful magnification of a scope, but several factors reduce the actual resolution to a lower number. Throw in a super high magnification eyepiece but it will become a blurry blob at some point.

omg this is so amazing, I'm so going to do this. but what if you wanted to scale up so you can have a larger telescope? but printing your own telescope is just amazing to me and just how little the cost would be from buying one.

You should do it, it is so much fun. It's possible to scale any part up or down. I would recommend building the 900/114 mm version first.

You can scale it up, but larger mirrors are more expensive since you'll have to use parabolic mirrors. Making a small aperture telescope with a spherical mirror is much less problematic and more forgiving than one with a larger aperture.

Most of them are #10-24 machine screws. I don't have an exact BOM for the entire telescope. I would suggest getting a variety pack plus you will need some longer bolts in certain areas like the lower mirror cell.

It would be challenging to do this. If you simply tried to scale the STL, then it would make everything bigger such as the nut holders and holes for the rods. This would break the design. One option is to import the model into CAD and then keep connectors the same but increase the size of the mirror holder and related parts.

so i been wondering because this is a open frame telescope. won't you have trouble with unwanted light? you know like cars or street lights?

If you are too close to lights, it can affect the image. I've found that finding a darker spot in your yard or whatever is fine in most cases. As long as it is not directly shining on the mirror, it works just fine.

The first week I had this Saturn was not visible in my back yard. I did have a view of it from the sidewalk in front but there are street lights every where. I just went into the shade of a tree and it worked. I saw Saturn for the first time and it looked great.

Great 3D print! But, I need to offer some advice...DO NOT ever clean the mirrors with a glass cleaner and cloth....you just wiped away the coating which results in a crappy image. You should only be cleaning the mirrors with distilled water only and never touch the mirrors. You will need to have the mirrors stripped & re-coated.

I had no choice but to clean it. It's better than having to buy a new one. The image is still good so the coating was durable.

@@MyEngineeringProjects Hi! I have the same problem -finding the right kind of glue.. So you have used the standard Silicone which is used in the Kitchen or Showers (between the ceramic tiles etc) ? I thought this stuff is´nt adhesive enough for the Primary Mirror.... Maybe some flexible mounting glue would be better? (Thought about UHU Repair MAX) Which type (Manufacturer, Brandname, etc) of silicone did you use ?

@@hansmustermann03 There is a product link in the description. Just use any clear silicone. Kitchen and Bath silicone is fine. It does a decent job of holding the mirror in place. I don't remember the exact manufacturer brand I used.

I'm not sure what you mean. The screws allow for full adjustment up, down and all around.

@@MyEngineeringProjects you have one screw in the middle (the one that pretensions the spring) and then three screws around pushing the mirror holder. In short, three points define a plane, any N additional points are N too much. In other words, to adjust the angle of the mirror, you need to loosen one screw before tightening the other. Maybe you are happy on how it works, but the design could be improved. Generally I think the position of the mirror in this design is ill defined.

This is an open source project that anyone can download and/or modify. The telescope works great for a beginner telescope that almost anyone can build themselves. I'm not the designer but you are free to make any modifications that you would like.

So, people have called the mirrors "glass", and you were cleaning the mirrors with glass cleaner, but there should not be any glass. While most mirrors have glass protecting them, telescope mirrors do not. So when you are cleaning the mirrors, you are also scratching it. If you want/need to clean the mirror there are plenty of videos out there on that. Just don't scratch the mirror with something abrasive like a paper towel.
