In this diy tutorial I show you how to make a long, full, layered tulle skirt. You can adapt this method to make the skirt the length or fullness that suits your design, and attach it to a bodice instead of a waistband if you're making a dress. Subscribe for couture sewing tutorials and inspiration, and if you enjoy my tutorials, please consider supporting me on Patreon - / rockstarsandroyalty
See how I made the petticoat to go under this skirt here - • How to make a long ruf...
I bought my bolt of extra wide tulle here - www.fabric.com...
I talk about how much tulle I used at 12:34 and 13:01. One bolt is enough for this length and number of layers, but yours may vary depending on the length and number of layers you use. I used around 30m of tulle and around 4m each of lining and satin, but again yours might vary depending on the length and fullness of your skirt and the width of the fabric.
Welcome! I am a fashion designer and an advocate for unique self-expression. I want to encourage you to have the confidence to break free from fashion and beauty trends and to wear what you love.

This is the ultimate princess skirt and this technique is so versatile. You could vary the length of the tulle layers to create different layers and skirt shapes. You could layer different colours of tulle together. You could add smaller ruffles or a trim to the edges of the layers. There's so many possibilities! Come and join me over in my Facebook group and show me what you create inspired by my tutorials and videos - facebook.com/groups/408803849559316/

I’m planning to make a ball dress for my daughter and this technique looks excellent. I have a feeling a full circle might be too bulky for a child. Do you think a half circle skirt base will be ideal? Secondly, did you gather the tulle that you attached on each layer? Thanks in anticipation of your response.
@RockstarsandRoyalty

I've made full circle skirts for kids and they've been fine. Plus the bonus is they're really good for spinning in lol. Yes - I gathered each layer of tulle then machine stitched it on

@RockstarsandRoyalty

I'm not sure - I've always used petticoats to create the fullness. You'd need a lot of layers of tulle to get it as full as you do with petticoats.

hi! can i ask what's the difference between doing the circle skirt in panels versus like two big halves?
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 4 года назад
Panels support the weight of the tulle layers better. When you cut big circles, part of them are on the bias and can drop with the weight of the tulle giving you an uneven hem.

Hi, I’m loving your tutorials. I’m in the process of making this skirt and would like to ask about gathering the tulle. Do you use the machine to sew and then pull to gather or are you hand sewing and gathering? I’ve never made a wedding dress before let alone anything as elaborate as this. Can’t wait to see what I’ achieve I’m the end. Thanks
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 4 года назад
Thank you. I gather the the tulle by hand, then machine it into place. That's how I work best, but you could definitely gather using a machine stitch that you pull to gather or gather with a ruffling foot if that suits you better. Have fun creating 💖

When joining the tulle layers, were you sewing them in their square shape just as cut or you were cutting them into the shape of the lining?
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 4 года назад
Each tulle layer is just the big tube of tulle made from sewing the tulle pieces together, gathered onto the skirt fabric. If you cut the tulle to right length there should be no need to cut or shape them further.

Hello : ) I am in love with this tutorial! I will definitely be using this for my victorian ballgown project. Just a few questions. What does the gathering of the tulle do? I couldn't really see on the video since the colors were so similar but wasn't sure if it was just so it would fit better. Also are you sewing the bottom of the tulle down to the bottom of the skirt or just leaving it be? And if I was to use the tulle as a crinoline and put another skirt overtop would that look normal or mess the whole thing up? Idk lol. Thank you so much
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 4 года назад
Hi Kiera, glad you found the tutorial helpful. Gathering the tulle creates the fullness. The tulle is just sewn at the top of each layer - the bottom isn't attached to the skirt underneath. Yes you can definitely use this method to create a crinoline. Just be aware that if the skirt you put over it is heavy it might lose some of the fullness. You can add some layers of a stiffer net underneath to help with that if necessary.
@chlo.rin.e

Would this tutorial work with a crinoline instead of a petticoat or should I follow the tutorial for your petticoat as well?

@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 4 года назад
I used a soft tulle, the kind that wedding veils are made from. If you're using a tulle that's a bit stiffer you may need less in each layer or less layers to achieve this amount of fullness.
@emerld61
@emerld61 5 лет назад
Hi, I'm a bit confused. So you have your fabric and your lining, and then you sewed your tulle to the right side of your outer fabric but then you put right sides together and sewed it to the lining? Is there any reason you cant sew your lining and outer fabric together first, then do the zipper then the tulle gathering? I'm sorry just looking for clarification
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 5 лет назад
You can do it that way if you prefer. I keep the outer and lining layers separate while add the tulle because it's less fabric to handle while getting it all under the machine and it takes away the possibility of accidentally catching the lining as you sew the tulle layers on.

Hi, may I know the difference if I make a full circle without cutting it into panels?
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 5 лет назад
I use panels rather than cutting a full circle because it supports the weight of the tulle better. When you cut a full circle the weight can pull down on the parts of the circle that are on the bias and you can end up with uneven hem. It's also more economical with fabric to cut panels rather than a full circle when it's this length. Hope that helps.

You just cut the tulle at the centre back open to the length of the zip, turn under the edge, and stitch it next to the zip. You can see it in this video too, the only difference is that I sewed the zip in after the tulle layers for the dress and before I attached the tulle layers for this skirt. does anyone know how I can attach the tulle and an overskirt together to zip it all up as one skirt? I didn't really understand that bit in the video... Thank you :)

Hi! I have a question. Can we do the hemming first before attaching the tulle layers, or it will ruin the shape? I just thought it would be easier that way, but im not sure what’s the cons

So a couple of questions, how many yards of fabric did you use for the panel circle skirt? And how long did it take you (start to finish) to make this skirt?
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 4 года назад
I think I used about 8 yards in total (outside and lining). I can't remember how long it took in totall sorry - things always take longer when I'm filming rather than just sewing!

So I made this skirt, well used the method and I must say this was a lot of work! How did you even fit this under your machine? I struggled but got it done! Thank you for this tutorial!
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 4 года назад
@@edenisrael5664 It is a lot of work and hard to control and get under the machine by the time that you get to the final few layers, but I think that the results are totally worth the effort. Glad to hear that my video helped you 🙂

Please is it same 18 inches for each step of tulle?
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 5 лет назад
Each layer of tulle will need to be longer than the previous one if you want them to all be the same length at the hem. Measure for each layer over the previous layer from where you'll be attaching it to the skirt to where you want it to finish at the bottom.

I know there's a video it's a little bit old but can you use organza instead of tulle?

Can you do the helm before you add the tulle? I'm a beginner and doing everything by hand currently

So the first bottommost layer is 4 meters gathered, is the last topmost layer also 4 meters gathered?
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 10 месяцев назад
I use the same amount of fabric in each gathered layer. You can vary it to change the overall silhouette of your skirt, eg put more fabric in the bottom layers of gathers if you want it fuller there, or less in the top layers if you want it less full over the hips.

Hi, thank you so much for this tutorial, it is sooo helpful and very clear ! Do you think I can apply the same technique on a circle skirt with a train ?
@RockstarsandRoyalty
@RockstarsandRoyalty 4 года назад
Yes you can. It just makes cutting the lengths of tulle a bit trickier. I usually cut the back tulle pieces to the length of the train and front tulle pieces to the length of the front then trim the difference once it's gathered onto the skirt. Hope that makes sense.
