In this jewelry making tutorial, I show how I made this statement turquoise pendant along with some of my favorite tips/hacks for metalsmithing. The leaves and flowers I use to adorn the Royston turquoise stone were made in my 2 previous videos. If you would like to see how I made the leaves and flowers see the links below:

OMG ! I cant believe you just answered a question/problem I have had that even Midas couldn't answer when I called the company !!!! The PAINTBRUSH !!!!! The metal on the paintbrush ! I was having issues with a bit of what looked like rust on pieces a while after making them . I thought it was bad patina or the container or a number of reasons ! I called Midas and Rio Grande and no one could figure out why ! Such a simple fix !!!! Thank you ! I actually stopped making jewelry because of it and have everything ready to start up again !! I had some beautiful pieces but could not for the life of me figure out what I was doing wrong !! I wouldn't be able to let that piece go if i had made it ! It is gorgeous !!!!! Thanks so much !!!!

Oh my goodness! This makes me so happy to hear!! I had the exact same issue where my patina looked like it was starting to rust. So frustrating! Ever since I switched to the plastic paintbrush I haven't had any issues at all with my patina. Also, if you haven't tried it, I suggest using renaissance wax for any places you apply a patina. The wax will actually darken the patina (which is the desired look I try to go for) and it will help prevent the patina from fading/discoloring over time 😊 Here is a link to it if you're interested! This stuff has been a game changer for me! amzn.to/36dXhic

@@SpiritMountainSilver I have some of th eRenn wax but you use it as a top coat over the patina or on the silver and then patina...I wondered if the patina would take if i used the wax first. THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!!!!!! Game changer !
@SpiritMountainSilver
@SpiritMountainSilver 2 года назад
@@jadeheart911 I apply it after I patina my piece! That's actually another cool hack with the wax now that you mention it.....if you apply the wax to an "un-oxidized" surface and then try to oxidize where that wax is, the surface wont be touched and will remain as is!! It can be a great way to protect anywhere you don't want the liquid oxidizer to go!

Hi! I’m gathering my tools and watching all your video’s now. I have TONs of Questions!!! Like a Million… So I’ll start with just a few. Lol First ~ Why do you cut such a large area outside of your stone setting? Is there a reason that this is done? Second ~ How do you know what solder to use where? I know you list what solder you use for each step. I was just wondering if there is a method to your madness at using each type here and there. And finally… Third ~ What is the tool you use to hold the piece in place while you set the stone? Oh! Wait! I lied!!! There is more!!! 😂 You use backing on your stones. What is it? Do you put it on yourself or do they come that way? Do you remove it before you set it or leave it? Ok! I promise I’m done for now… Thank you so much for sharing your talent and knowledge!!!

wowzer Leah , what a beautiful piece. I have watched your feather and flower videos as well and practice, so tiny for arthritic hands, but will keep at it. Would you mind sharing what gauge silver do you use...and i heard you use #5 for blade, is this what you tend to use more so than other #;s? Im trying to understand better the blade # and the gauge # and when to use what!! also curious about the plastic paint brush, never seen anything like that, could you share where to get this...... thank you so much for sharing, love your video;s...btw...waving at you from vermont!!!
@SpiritMountainSilver
@SpiritMountainSilver 2 года назад
Hi Kristine! Thank you so much for your kind words!😊 I like to use 22 gauge for my backplates! I have found that 5/0 works best for me with that gauge of silver because the blade isn't too big that the teeth get stuck, but not too fine that it takes forever to saw out a piece lol. I actually made a saw blade guide for reference from one of my previous videos! Here is the link to it :) drive.google.com/file/d/1QT6uUdGcqSCStxHJ3eEAUSfF9fP-uOVN/view?usp=sharing That plastic paint brush I use to apply my patina is actually just a water paint brush! You can fill the paint brush with the oxidizer, however I chose not to god forbid if it did leak that would be very very bad...just my luck that would happen to me.🤣 Here is the link to that as well! amzn.to/3sP8ygK

Hi, so great to see you on RU-vid! What a gorgeous piece. I do have a question; you take such care to saw so close to your components which looks great, but why do you use such a lot (large piece) of metal for the backplate? Also, bristle discs are SOOO expensive, do you ever use tripoli and rouge? I drop my pre-polish time to 10% of bristle disc time, by only using them for special tasks. Do you find you get a finish you like better? Always want to learn, thanks! And btw, its "MUSS- lin", like bus, fuss, cuss.
@SpiritMountainSilver
@SpiritMountainSilver 2 года назад
Thanks for watching! For the backplate, I prefer to leave a little extra room for soldeirng operations. During times when I don't get a perfect solder (where all elements solder down on first try) and have to go back and add solder to any areas where it didn't flow or flowed in the wrong direction, I prefer wire solder to do this which has the tendency to roll all over the place....and roll off the backplate. So to try and avoid the wire solder rolling off the back plate I try to leave a little more room so it is easier to work with. I also never waste any silver. Any excess silver I cut out from the back plate will be used again as a back plate for a smaller bezel or as piece to stamp my makers mark or other stamp designs. I have used tripoli and rouge before and although they give a nice finish I prefer the radial discs. I find they are easier to use and have MUCH less cleanup which is especially helpful to me because I don't have a sink in my workshop to easily clean off the polishing compounds. When using radial discs combined with Zam to finish off the piece I get a superb shine. I highly recommend Zam!

Truly a work of art. So much talent and artistry in you. Where does one go to find your jewelry; store, catalog, internet... ?? This piece that you made is absolutely spectacular, and the work you put in just shows how MUCH actual knowledge and talent one must possess in order to make this masterpiece as you just did. Fantastic job; I couldn't wait to hit the "Subscribe" button.

It would be really helpful for you to mention what safety precautions you use for each step of the process. Eye protection? Hearing protection? Dust mask? Respirator? Additional ventilation? Thanks!
@SpiritMountainSilver

This video goes over the basic safety measures that should be taken while silversmithing. However, I advise you read the safety precautions on all tools/materials before using in addition to my recommendations. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xgrdW1Xy8qM.html

You are not only a wonderful silversmith/jeweler but an outstanding teacher as well, I watched and subscribed to one of your videos some time back and now I am back to binge watch the rest of yours, ( now I will watch over and over again). I have learned so much from your videos I do not have to keep looking for someone else to learn this fine art from. Thank you so much for your giving so much of yourself and your talents.

I'm trying to write a book where my main character's family are silversmiths for thematic reasons, but to do that, I gotta learn about it. This is very helpful. I have a lot to learn, but I'm getting there. Hopefully this book will be good in the likely three or four years it's going to take me to write it.

The way you structure your videos step by step has been so great for me as a beginner! the pendant turned out so gorgeous!! i just ordered the last of the tools i need to start making my own jewelry and im so excited to get started. If you dont mind sharing, how do you go about sourcing materials? I've been searching for months for wholesale cabs online, but its been the most difficult thing to source for me. i dont want to accidentally buy synthetic stones. TY

Thank you so much for your kind words!! For turquoise, I have found that Turquoise Moose ( turquoisemoose.com/ ) has the best selection. All of their stones are top quality and they offer both free form stones along with calibrated stones! I'd definitely check them out and let them know you heard of them from me!😊😉

I used the big shot gt8000! Link to it is in my description😊 I really only use this torch at one setting. For smaller soldering operations I use my berzomatic torch which also is linked in the description I believe!
