Have you wondered HOW TO MAKE A SADDLE RING? Maybe you wanted to make one, but procrastinated, because you were unsure how to make it or felt intimidated? I hope my video will show you that the process is easier than you think and will encourage you to try this type of ring! The gemstone setting I chose for this project is silly simple (you might even say that I cheated a little), but honestly, sky is the limit! You can do whatever you like, as long as you keep the structure solid, well made and finish your ring aesthetically. I also used a handy template, so the responsibility for sizing was taken off of my shoulders by lovely Kristin, who prepared these templates (linked further below).
This video was made in a partnership with @PepetoolsUSA who is our favourite tools manufacturer and supplier! Thank you Pepe for your support and for making this video possible.

So much fun and I really loved watching all the polishing steps, and appreciate that you don't skip through these important points but let the work process flow. Great job on the ring Basia, and thank you again for making such great content! 🤩🙏💖

oh my, Alicia! You've made me so happy, thank you! ❤ I'm so glad you enjoyed this video, I feel it might be my best tutorial yet :) It means a lot that you've pointed out the polishing stages, as I actually did skip a lot of them in my past videos. I always thought that they are boring and too long, I assumed it was clear whats steps I was taking and that a short mention of them will suffice. But I understand now that is not the case and I will focus on each step more in my upcoming tutorials :) So your feedback is very important for me and very helpful. Thank you! ❤❤❤

Hiya Lady Stardust, Thank you for the Christmas present of this fantastic ring tutorial. It is very sweet of you to share. Typical of you to share the ooops points, too, with the star coming off and the ring is going for its first flying lesson. Nothing is hidden here. When you cut the ring from the sheet silver, it could have been cut on a computer cutter; it is so perfect to the black line. Your use of embellishments is definitely getting to me; I've found myself wondering about adding some to the pieces I'm making. I usually end up with an austere-looking piece for a lady; I need to watch more about how you do it and develop my own style. Your mastering of the ring bender was an inspiration; watching the bends become the correct and gentle curve of the ring size was magic. Swapping between paste and wire solder was good, showing us that it is possible and good to do. That gem was the perfect choice for the ring, a very feminine piece of work in design and execution. I love how your adding a few simple shapes changes the circle into a fully finished work of art! Thank you, Dear Lady, for this video and for all the films you have made for us throughout the whole year. Your skill is exemplary, and your mastery of a foreign tongue to bring us these are heartwarming. A wonderful Christmas to you and Jarek, full of the love you bring us all. Steve xxxx

@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Год назад
You totally should! I think it's perceived as "improper" perhaps, or not professional, but I actually really like this solution and the effect it creates. Make sure you sand down the curve a little, so that the solder joint between the bezel and the ring is strong. Then you can leave it as it is or play around with adding embellishments, to conceal the gap and add details :)

@stephencoster9532 Год назад
Hiya Emma, Good question; the only way I've found is to abrade the solder away. Sorry, but that means a file/buff sticks or abrasive tips in your flex shaft if you have one. Try using less solder when you first solder; if you need to, you can add more if it needs it. Like most jewellers, I use excess and then curse as I file and polish it away. Stay safe, Steve...

I completely understand you, I was starting out with the minimal budget and I would say that the starterpack I share in the video I linked is a good starting point. I would go with the larger supplier too, simply because you can be sure you will get good supplies for your money. Whereas when you try to save as much as possible, you my end up buying fake gems and poor quailty metal that's not what supplier claims it to be. It's better to buy less, but better quality. @HabibahW
@HabibahW Год назад
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing pricing the finished jewelry
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Год назад
@@HabibahW There are two ways to go about it. You can either use the weight of the silver after cutting and check how much is will be with the official online site that shares prices of metals (for the grams). You will need to account for when you purchased that piece of metal, because the price might change over time. So it's good to keep the track of your orders (by having invoices close by or making a small note and adding it to your supplies). Another way is to measure how much silver you use to cut out this shape (this method accounts for some of the extra metal around the shape you're cutting out). Then you can proceed the same way as before, using the weight of your silver. You can also check how much a piece of silver would be with the shop you got your supplies from. Let's say you're using a piece of metal sheet that is about 5cm x 4cm and you will use its entirety for that piece. You can go to Rio Grande or Cooksongold, depending on where you get your metal sheet and use the calculator on their site to calculate the price. This method is helpful in case you have no idea how much you paid for your silver and need ANY starting point. I hope this helps!

DUDE!!!! Using an eraser to hold your bezel while you sand the bottom! What kind of magical hack is this!? I'm totally using that. I end up dropping them half the time. So, I do have a question. I bought some solder paste and it leaves a black residue every time that the pickle doesn't clean. Could that be a brand thing? Or is it a solder paste thing?

Hahaha, isn't that a neat trick?? One of the makers and my viewers, Melissa, shared this tip and I LOVE it! Been saving my fingers since, especially when working with a sharp little bugger, like a bezel made with a gallery wire haha 😄 As for the solder paste, hmm... To be honest, mine sometimes does it but sometimes not. And it's hard for me to say - at least at this point - what causes it. In this video, after rewatching it now, I think some bits of my solder paste burned and were black (more than usual) because I haven't pickled my metal sheet after annealing it, but went stright to placing embellishments and soldering. That was a mistake, cleaning the metal after each job involving fire can be very helpful. Other than that, could this be a brand thing? But then again, I tried a no name paste from Cooksongold and one from Pepetools. They both get dark sometimes and sometimes they don't. Once I figure out the difference, I'll be sure to share it in the video :)

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Thanks so much for the response! Good to know I'm not the only one. On the pieces I used it on I had quite the time getting it off. Yes! If you ever figure it out I would love to know. ☺

what n how is regular solder differ from hard solder and when use either please?
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Год назад
Not sure if I understood correctly, but I use solder paste, which comes in extra easy, easy, medium and hard. And I also use solder wire, which I cut myself into smaller pieces. For regular soldering, like bezels, rings and bigger joints, I use the solder pallions. But I tend to use the paste for embellishments, to control the amount, and also because little embellishments can stick to the paste and it's easier to solder them in place. As for the grade, you start with hard solder and make your way down to easy grade. The more soldering joints there are, the more grades you will use. It is to preserve the solder joints and prevent the solder that was used before from flowing again. In other words, and please correct me if I'm wrong, the temperature is different for different grade of solder, so you will use the hard one first and easy second. Hope it helps!

@@TheArtOfMetalsmithingabsolutely true. Plus, the hard solder has the most silver in it, so it will match the main item better. Medium solder with less silver, easy even less, and extra easy least amount of silver in it. I hope this helps.

That first soldering was badly made. I wasn't even surprised that star has fallen off. I'd pickle the metal after annealing - it was black from oxides. Other than that it looks quite pretty as a final product.

Spot on - I always pickle after each soldering or annealing job, but I must've gotten distracted with filming, that I forgot to do it that time. I only spotted this once I was editing the video. This must've caused the star to fall off, it's very important to pickle and clean the metal before and after soldering 👏
