"It's not hoarding, because it's art!" I LOVE THIS and completely agree!! I've had a huge antique wardrobe cabinet filled with every kind of "scrap art material" you can imagine, since my children were in pre-school for this exact reason. I think it's due in part, because my parents were children of the Great Depression and lived by the motto, "Use It Up, Wear It Out, Make It Do, or Do Without." My Dad was a Master Machinist and Tool/Dye Maker, whose mind was creative and artistic, as well as astutely inventive and problem solving. He was upcycling and repurposing a wide variety of materials, 70 years before it became a part of our culture. He always told me that his collection of materials sparked his imagination, which led him to invent and build solutions to whatever problem he was trying to resolve or create beautiful pieces of art. From the time I was 5 years old on, we spent MANY weekends searching for "treasures" that had been discarded as garbage, and going to Junk Yards, garage sales, thrift stores, and auctions. He'd point out various objects, parts, and materials and explain to me the many ways it could be used for other purposes. He continued to pursue this passion every day until he was 80 years old, when his health failed. He's 83 now and when I'm working on a piece of art or fixing a mechanical issue of some kind, I take video and pictures to show him and STILL ask for his input on how he would approach it. The bond between us is unbreakable! When my Dad retired from John Deere Plow Planter after 31 years, my parents moved into a house with 10 acres. He absolutely LOVED collecting vine and various foliage from their property and creating wreaths, baskets, and outdoor sculptures! Thank you for your sharing your talent and inspiration with us! I plan to take your course soon! ~~Christy~~
