This book is basically a posh ringbinder. We will make our own cover, use ring binders to keep it together and fill it with our favourite papers. It is reusable so when you want to add or take out sheets, you can do so really easily. Making your own book puts you in control of the size, shape, format and paper and you will probably save money too over buying one in an art shop.
I have come up with a series of four different types of hardback sketchbook you can make at home using no specialist equipment, just materials you should have already. There is no sewing involved. I will release a film each week to guide you through the process. What you want to add to them is entirely up to you. Just be warned, this can get addictive!
In this one, we will use binding rings, which are very easy to buy on the internet, but I suggest a few alternatives in case you do have any difficulty getting hold of them.
In the first one, I showed how to make an accordion/concertina book by cutting and sticking strips of paper together. You can see it here: • How to make a watercol...
In the second, I showed how to make a perfect bound sketchbook: • How to make a watercol...
In the third, I showed an alternative accordion/concertina design, with added pockets: • How to make a watercol...
With thanks to Christie Raley and Michael Ann Fitzgerald for suggesting this topic. If there is a question you want to ask me, just write it in the comments!
Materials:
Cover - mount board, grey board, old hard back book, recycle sketchbook cover
Paper - of your choice - cartridge, watercolour, pastel, acrylic
Glue & brush - white PVA, acid free if possible or glue stick
Scissors/knife/cutting mat/ruler
Bone folder/knife handle/scissors handle
Heavy weights (or cookery books!)
Newspaper, non-stick paper (clean cereal packet middle)
Decoration - up to you!
Many books are sewn, and while these are very durable, the process is more complicated and your will need waxed linen thread, needles, a press etc. If you get bitten by the book binding bug and are interested in taking things further, may I suggest two great books and also a fabulous channel here on RU-vid:
Bound - by Rachel Hazel - ISBN:9780857835079
Making Handmade Books - by Alisa Golden - ISBN 9781600595875

I am a full time artist based in Berkshire, UK, and every week I share a tip, trick or technique I wish someone had told me about ages ago. I release them at 2pm on Sunday (UK time), so if you like what you see please like the film and subscribe, plus the notification bell so you will be the first to know about new films.
If you are looking for in-depth online watercolour courses, please head to www.lizchadertonstudio.co.uk and I also do in person workshops in Berkshire. I have written three books: Painting watercolour on canvas, Painting animals in watercolour, Line and Wash Painting. All published by The Crowood Press.

Thank you very much for making these videos, we all have a tendency to rush in to things like this without thinking it through. Particularly liked your 'nipping in ' tip. I'm making a book because buying them is expensive and not the way I want !

@@LizChadertonArt The simple concertina! It reminded me of a little address book I had many years ago. I love the way the folds go back and forth, AND turn corners; as a hopelessly-clumsy-can't-tell-my-right-from-my-left sort of person I can see myself getting into all kinds of bother with that. And then there's all that glue - what an opportunity for trouble. I'm going to have a go - wish me luck. ☺

Turned out great, I love it! This one has great flexibility for switching things out. Looks like it will be fun to use, also. Thanks for this! 😊

Fantastic!👍 I love the rings and the cover! It would be nice to be able to take out a page and tape it down to paint on. And I like the large size too. I make small ones for travel, (5×7ish) but now I gotta make a big one.. it looks fun lol. Thank you so much! Oh, and your outfit is so pretty!

They are really flexible, large or small. And thank you - it was cold that day, so I needed a big warm jumper!

I've always wondered about making a ring-bound sketchbook this way but I worry about how it would work for dry media. Wouldn't the fact that the rings are loose (rather than fixed to each other as in a spiral binding or in a ring binder) so the sheets can rub against each other in all directions cause drawings to smudge (particularly thinking of pastels, charcoal, graphite etc)? I would love to have a sketchbook with lots of different types of media-specific papers in it (different watercolour papers, pastel papers, marker papers, tinted and non-tinted, etc... all kept at the back and I'd be able to pick them and move them to the current spot in the sketchbook as needed, to keep the sequential chronological orderI enjoy in sketchbooks) but this stops me as I have had some bad experiences with stuff getting smudged. Do you have any suggestions or would this work best for only non-smudgy materials?

That’s a very good point. You could interleave some protective papers, but it might be better to make a perfect bound with different papers and interleave the glancing pages too - this is how to do it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2wF5Nqb3P34.html

@@LizChadertonArt ah, but then I wouldn't have the flexibility of being able to move the pages around to preserve the chronological order if I switch materials and papers around. I wonder if using some sort of tie around the sketchbook would prevent the side-to side rubbing. Hmm. Might try this. I really love the idea of a ring binder sketchbook!

@@LizChadertonArt well, that would depend on how thick I would make the sketchbook (give me *all of* the paper!!), haha

One last thought, you could varnish the cover to protect against spills and dirt
@LizChadertonArt
@LizChadertonArt Год назад
yes you could. To be honest I like splashes and spills because it shows it has been used and loved. Like a sticky cookery book…..
