The problem I found with homemade remedies of “a bit of this and a bit of that” is they don’t work as advertised or rarely work. I haven’t tried this mix but when the soap and water evaporate they leave a thick oily residue behind that runs down into the top of the soil and causes health problems in the roots. Oil will cover everything it touches,over time. It stays on the leaves and when the hot sunlight hits it it fries the leaf 🍂 You need a quality product that has been Thoroughly tested and does what it says on the tin.

You can change up the soaps so the harsher ones can be used on things like squash bugs.

It can help with eggs. Squash bugs are hard bodied. The stronger soaps in this case do more damage to squash bugs. hydroponic food doesn't taste as good. I can tell the difference, it's not as nutrient-rich. Maybe check out Garden like a Viking for his perspective. He talks about living soil. he's done hydroponics in the past successfully, and definitely recommends soil gardening, if you are able.

No bubble burst. Be careful too, if aphids get in, they go crazy. Nothing wrong with chemical ferts as you can have fake N, P and K. @twinklingeye I kind of had that idea at first. But, I just can not deal with the biting insects and having to water so often. I hate to admit it but I need something more hands off and peaceful. These hydroponic grow systems seem to be the alternative. Yes, I could grow indoors using soil, and eventually that could be the correct path for me, but for now when Autumn arrives and all my outdoor garden has died that will be it for me. If hydroponics does not work then indoor growing will get a chance. Lol, if hydroponics food taste bland or just plain weird I'll definitely try something different...but it will not be outdoors unless I am 20 stories in the air or higher.

Soapy water kills squash bugs quickly.

@@PatC. Thank you. I do use soapy water to put the bugs in that I catch on the plants but I was asking Gary about if this works for squash bugs if I spray it on the plant.

The castile soaps seems less effective on hard bodied insects but the stronger soaps work. I dont do this for Neem oil as it has some good compounds in it, I am not sure how it does sitting in soap like this. I make and use Neem oil fresh. Heavier soaps mixed right work well as contact killer on both soft and hard bodied insects. You would use less but it is hard to give ratios as the soaps just vary so much. I also am not sure what the wax striper is. And that is what's difficult, what are the 'extras' in soap. But I would consider it moderate to harsh. I am hoping Gary will let us know. I already have Neem Oil and if this is a good mixture that does the same thing then I can use it when I run out of the Neem Oil.

Neem oil has lots of compounds in it that affect insects that ingest it. It is an oil so it works as smothering. But it is filled with good stuff. Does the neem oil really work? I sprayed that last night and they were flying away. I switched to sevin and same thing. This morning they were near the house, as if to get away from the oil. I just want them DEAD! Had to use a sprayer with the hose. Please help!
