Hi watched your video a couple of weeks back and decided to give it a go. Well i had hell on getting the oil to mix that maybe because we have hard water as i have read this can have an affect on how it mixes. Citric acid is supposed to help in this case but i havent tried it yet. What i did find on the net was fruit farmers in the states mix the oil and the soap first to emulsify then add to the water. I tried that this morning and it was so easy to mix in water after that. Going to try it tonight in my knapsack sprayer on the fruit trees and the lawn as it is supposed to work on grubs and ants.

Started using neem oil last year because I decided to have a go at dahlias. (Works on tomato’s too). Also put some mint oil into the mix. Unfortunately I was using “detergent” so will change over to the proper soap for this year. It does work. One thing I would add is respray after heavy rain. I’ve also put the formula that suits me on the bottle as I’m getting older and the memory is not what it was. I’ve only recently discovered the channel and I think it is “braw”. I’m just across the Forth from Eli and Kate so it’s fantastic to find something so local.

I have just got my order of ourons neem oil and quinns natural organic castile soap, I havent tried it out yet but I have a load of tomato plants, couple peppers and a load of sweetcorn, all currently inside as it's just not warm enough but they will be going outside eventually, so just wanted to ask you if it's safe to spray fruit/veg plants with it as a preventative for bugs? Do you know if it affects the taste of the plants produce?
@eliandkate
@eliandkate 3 года назад
hey Bexyboo88 yup, in the quantities we use as gardeners it's safe to spray fruit and veg. It absolutely stinks though, as I mentioned so you might want to give things a rinse before you use them, just for the smell if nothing else 😂 Make sure you do a test somewhere before spraying with abandon. There were a few folks who followed this video last year (and the insecticidal soap one) without checking the dilution and killed some of their plants. As with anything, be careful with your babies - you put all that effort into growing them.

It rains constantly in Scotland, so I'd have to be out putting down fresh layers on a daily basis, which apart from being way out of what I can afford, is more time consuming than I can fit into my life. If you have a really bad infestation you might want to try a combination of the sticky traps for the adults and hydrogen peroxide solutions for the larva. I found this was the absolute best thing for the fungus gnats (if you've seen the video, you know I tested out various solutions over the last couple of years). I have to be honest in a garden rather than pots you'll struggle to control them. They'll come in from elsewhere as it's their natural environment. Lots of damp and rotting vegetation. I would be very hesitant at using drenches in an actual garden, you would be risking all the essential organism in your soil. You might just have to live with it.

Hi Eli, brilliant video as always, my raspberry plant was decimated by raspberry sawfly last year. Would this be good for tackling them?
@eliandkate
@eliandkate 2 года назад
hmmmm ok not a simple one. Neem oil can stop the eggs from hatching if its sprayed directly onto the eggs. It can also kill larva if sprayed directly onto them and if they eat the plant that has been treated. However, it doesn't kill the flies unless again, sprayed directly onto them. As I always remind folk though, neem oil isn't like using a pesticide or insect spray, it doesn't kill things instantly, more that it disrupts their biology that eventually kills them. And please also remember not to just spray willy nilly, don't spray flowers and be careful of other insects. :D Soap sprays as well can help dealing with the eggs and larva, but again, don't go mad, spray with care.
@barabas13
@barabas13 2 года назад
@@eliandkate thanks for that Eli, it’s actually the larvae that’s the problem, they eat the leaves then pupate then lay their eggs in the soil under the plant and start over again! Does the neem oil deter snails and slugs? As here in London/ UK area is constantly raining time to time even now in Summer months or anytime during the year.
@eliandkate
@eliandkate 3 года назад
Hey Tom, no it doesn't work by detering things, as much as it stinks to me, it works by actually affecting the animals who ingest it biologically. It causes them to stop mating and loose their appetite, so reduces the numbers in the garden. In terms of deterrents, I've found that the majority of the gardener's tricks haven't worked for me. I've tried coffee grounds, eggshells, grit etc but none of them made any difference. On pots and containers I used copper tape (the good quality stuff) and found that has made a massive difference. The only down side was that it was great for containers but a bit useless if your plants were in the ground. But last weel I posted a video about copper rings (form a company called slugrings) and they have been brilliant. I've been using them for a bout a month now and they are definitely making a huge difference. Not sure if that would be something you'd consider useful ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rniKSLQHQTc.html

Ok let's look at this 🙂 The first think is to remember you can't just copy someone else, all our situations are different so we need to be able to adapt recipes to suit our personal needs. It may be that you need to add a tiny bit more soap and shake for longer. The other thing, which I suspect might be the case, is that 8tsntoo cold. The oil solidifies when it's too cold. So maybe try making your solution up with warm water? I know mine can solidify by the time I'm finished spraying

Great vid, brilliant information. I have heard about neem oil killing bees, has anybody had any issues? Also been told could harm house pets but in bigger doses.

No the studies have shown that the type of use we do in our gardens isn't harmful to pollinators or birds, or pets, us etc. Even if you get the oil on a flower head etc The worries have come from some folk who misunderstood the studies and put messages out on social media, which wet a bit crazy (I was actually chatting about this with another youtuber a few months ago and had to go research it hence I'm full of the info LOL). Basically, the active ingredient azadirachtin, in large doses (like industrial scale) potentially could be harmful if ingested, because of that, anyone company supplying it has to meet all the government regulations and get approval before they can sell it. Some of the research studies into neem for agriculture have been really interesting in the unexpected benefits that have been found, in certain circumstances. I always love that, when it makes you think woah... I wouldn't have thought of that, I wonder why that happened :) Anyways I'll stop now coz I know not everyone wants to go do their own research and read academic papers :D but in case you are bored. I really liked this article... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK234645/

Is neem oil harmful to beneficial insects, such as bees, if they feed on the nectar of sprayed plants?
@maxsno

This stuff is a contact spray oil coats soft body, over winter spray coats eggs , no harm to bees. Does nothing to hormones please stop false info , oil smothers breath parts of bug and coats body parts only .

Is neem oil safe on veg and fruits?
@eliandkate
@eliandkate 2 года назад
Hey Dee, in the amounts we use in a garden then yes, although it tastes and smells absolutely disgusting, so you will want to wash anything of you've just sprayed it before harvest. It's a different story for large scale like agriculture though. Here in the UK the active ingredient of neem oil is controlled for pesticide use (why folk talk about it being banned in the UK), because when massively scaled up like that it can be detrimental. Like with everything you introduce to your garden, a but of common sense goes a long way. Don't spray it on flowers, try to avoid spraying beneficial insects etc. etc.

Will this be effective with grubs?
@eliandkate
@eliandkate 3 года назад
hmmm I can’t say specifically because obviously there will be loads of factors. But I have heard lawn care folk recommending using neem oil in a solution to water the lawn in order to deal with grubs so it may be worth trying a drench.

I found my way to here looking for a way to help my bay tree, The bug curls up the leaf and wraps itself inside and the go yellow, the black dots appear on the underside. Will neem sort this, I've hard pruned for nearly 10yrs trying to get this problem sorted, one summer all i had left was a 4inch truck and no leaves. And the bug still came back, I took a cutting and the new one is infested too 😆

sorry I can’t say. Neem might help if the bugs are eating the plant but without knowing more about what’s going on it’s hard to say

I have this problem or should I say my bay trees do. Have you finally managed find an effective solution? I am trying removing all the affected leaves and moving the plant to a new spot because I heard the pest overwinters in the soil around the plant. I'll see how they grow this year.

Hey Amy welcome aboard and thoughtful feedback :D hmm I totally understand where you are coming from, if you are just looking to learn a thing quickly and get a job done then that's exactly what you are after. It's not what this channel is about though, here we focus more on the community of people who have come on this journey with me over the years and the social and informal chat style, so whether it's a full on "vlog" type video or a "let me share a thing I've learned", they are always geared towards that friendly and social interaction. Especially now that we're all locked down and online communities are much more important to some of us than ever before :D If you prefer the in and out, got what I need type channel you should try some of the video libraries companies have. I know we have a few in the UK run by gardening companies as a quick hot to guide section. Good luck :D
