Hi everybody, we’re making a mock-panelled window seat with built in storage this week, and this video covers the process of making the carcass and hinged seat, and details of the construction to ensure we have a heavy duty storage solution that looks great and is built to last. Enjoy!

I’m so glad I came across your videos! I am refacing my kitchen cabinets and wanted your opinion on the options I have to make paint grade shaker style doors; options being: 1. adding 1/4 MDF to the top of 1/2 MDF to replicate rails and styles as you show in this video (#007) 2. loose tenon method like you did in video #001 (MDF) 3. CNC out the middle of MDF and insert a panel from the back 4. Traditional rails and styles out of maple with a bevel like Rockler’s 2pc bit set provides. Ideally I want the bevel, but if it’s going to cause a ton of extra work with not much benefit besides cosmetics...I’m ok passing it up. I have basic woodworking tools (table saw, router, etc) and am also ok buying what I need to do the best job, since I’ll have the tools forever and still save making my own doors. Thank you for your help! Subscribed and looking forward to going through your other videos. -Ed

Hi Wd and thanks! My preference is for loose tenons - groove the stiles along their length, and the rails around 3 sides then glue them together with loose tennis made from the panel material. Just made 4 doors that way today; still the easiest method of construction I’ve come across in ~20 years of doing this for a living. 👍👍

Great work! I love watching you work, even though I despise MDF! I see you use it a lot... what are the main reasons for choosing MDF over solid wood or ply? All the best, Dan

+Build Something Thanks! I make bespoke/fitted furniture from whatever people want. If it's a painted finish then MDF just takes paint better than ply. In ~17 years nobody's asked me to make anything in solid wood. 👍

Peter Millard I’m continuing to time-travel and your use of MDF is foreign to me too, but it’s growing on me. At work we use a lot of melamine, and the more I work with it the more I have to spend time in my own shop with real wood! I don’t know how you stand the dust but then again, I don’t have a Festool vac or tools. Fun build. Scott

Really enjoyed this video. What is the name of that little bit you used to drill the pilot holes for your hinge screws? Looked like some kind of springy drill bit?

I've really enjoyed your videos, thank you so much. I'm curious as to the thickness of the ply used for the top that you screw the piano hinge into, is it 18mm? I have a similar project on the go but I've made the top with 12mm ply (I'm learning!), do you think this would be too thin to mount a piano hinge without splitting the wood? I'm tempted to make the top again with 18mm. Once again thank you for producing such clear videos.

Thanks! Yes, the top was 18mm; I think you’ll struggle to get a decent fixing in 12mm tbh; is it possible to add a 6mm skin to it?

Hi great video as always I’m planning on building myself a dining nook and was looking at building it in a similar way to your window seat my question is what size thickness are you using as I’m not sure what size thickness to use to support weight of 2 grown adults the size is 1130mm x 400mm and I’m going to build 2 and put them together. Any import will be great thanks in advance

I roller MRMDF too, do you find the sponge roller pads OK, or do you use the really short hair gloss rolls?

Hi Peter a fan from México 🇲🇽 here! Hola!! Your videos are amazing, question; what tool do you use to make the dominoes holes? And I see that you use little pieces of MDF to fill those hole, are they the ones beef cut by that tool? And last question, what’s the name of that tool, thank you and have a great day

Thank you! The domino is a tool made by Festool; it’s the only machine that makes mortises for that shape of loose tenon, though you can do something similar with a jig and router - I make a jig for exactly that purpose, should be available directly below this video, or at 10minute.shop. 👍

MR or Moisture Resistant MDF has been my preference for a long long time. Much better quality board for not much more money. 👍👍

hi peter, i am in the middle of a huuuuge millard binge, and i cant thank you enough for what you are doing for me, question in this video... what would you have done if you had correctly measured for the lid, given that there was a gap needed to the left hand side, but when it opens its almost flush with the wall? i personally think the way it looks in the video is better than if it were taken into consideration at the start.... do you follow? if you had noticed the irregularities of the walls at the start, i imagine that gap down the left of the lid, would have been the same at the front as the rear... hope i made sense here. thanks

Wow, old vid! If I'd known about the walls at the start I would have made the lid with a join in it that lay over the edges of the carcass, with the ends fixed to the carcass and scribed to the wall on each side. That way you'd have plenty of clearance. 👍

What type of screws are you using for mdf to mdf with no pre-drilling? Are you worried about "spilt-out"? The Domino device looks amazing. And thanks for mentioning "MR mdf", never knew it existed.

Hi. Old vid! I use Spax M-cut screws, but I always pre-drill; MR MDF has a much harder core than regular MDF, and is less prone to splitting. 👍

Hi Peter, I've just noticed on your video that you've applied glue on a painted edge of your mdf @3:00 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kYm2PpcZZKY.html. I've seen a few times that people have said not to glue on a painted surface as it would not take to the glued edge, better direct to wood. Are there any differences in strength painted v untouched side? Cheers Martin Thank you for your videos!

Hi Martin. Old vid, but yes, I generally apply glue to a painted surface, only if a/ I can abrade the surface first before applying glue, and b/ if I’m also using some kind of mechanical fixings eg screws, nails, dominos, biscuits, dowels, tenso or clamex fixings. I find I t’s simply easier to paint the whole panel then scuff up the face where the edge abutts, than it is to ‘paint around’ the area; I did plenty that way, before I thought it through for myself, but since changing to my way of working I’ve noticed zero difference in the strength of the joint.
