I feel like you are one of the few artists that share almost all of their little secrets in production. on top of that your way of explaining things is phenomenal. I learned so much from you already
Dude! Ive been looking for boombap tutorials for the longest time! You really got some dope videos with very useful tips on how to make beats sound more "boombapy". Thanks for the great work!
Dude… these are really great tips. I make beats of this genre as this is the genre I was raised on- mostly for beat battles- and often at the end I’m sitting figuring out what it needs and it’s definitely more focus on the texture of my drums. I used the pitch down on my high hats and your tip of side chaining my ambient sounds on a current beat I’m working on and really really helped. My shit went from pretty good to super flavorful…. Thank you so much!! Now I’m off to binge watch all your videos lol
This video is really good. I’m working only in Logic Pro X now and I find your content useful. Much of your ideas are easy for me to replicate. Cool results when applying these techniques. My favorite hip hop vibes live in this neighborhood of ideas.
this video is like a bibal for aspiring boom bap producer. and once again a big big thanks to you sirrrr! ❤️ you really done a lot for the producer community.
Hey navie I'm a huge fan of your straight to the point and clear tutorials, I'm new to fl studio and would love if whenever you have the time to consider doing a video on workflow (how you organize your patterns, label your channels and mixer) and any other useful related tips you might have. It world be greatly appreciated and would help people like me who are really disorganized to have some kind of formula to keep things from getting messy. Keep doing great work
Hallowell! Thank you for your lovely comment. Interestingly enough, I am probably similar to you. I am not very organized and tidy - but this doesn't really hinder my process at all. I put a video out on Subtractive Arrangement that you might find helpful when it comes to workflow. Beyond that, I will have to think about how I would approach this topic. Thanks for the suggestion
@@NavieD Thanks for the reply Navie. I watched your video on subtractive arrangement and you explained it very clearly and i was able to use the method right away and i found it very intuitive. Im not organized at all and its something i need to work on since it actually does hinder my process cause i get completely lost if i dont label everything, especially in fl studio. You're new video is useful since i found out that can download templates that label everything for me. Anyways, sorry for the long reply, but i just wanted to let you know. keep up the great work and im looking forward to your next upload.
first video of yours that I am watching; good fucking job bro this is a brilliant perspective conveying what matters rather than giving people material to straight up copy. Definitely subscribing to you my g
Lots of good tips here. I like how you've broken down what makes these beats sound vintage. But also that you present them as optional. I love the boombap sound, but as a qualityphile, personally I would skip some of the things that were shortcomings of the tech back then: keep the pitches accurate, use the NY compression but avoid muddiness, keep things stereo, maybe skip the noise track. Essentially making the beats as they were envisioned to be but couldn't given the equipment of the time.
Nice video man. You have a really clean mic. Anyways can you make a video in detail about making sounds in mono and side chaining. I feel like I don't know too much on it.
Thank you boss! I actually have a video on Sidechaining in the vault, that will come up early next year. I will keep your mono suggestion in mind, I think my video coming out in a few weeks will help with that. Stay on the look out!
Your beats sound really good i started on fl studios in 2003 after i mastered the mtv music generator for playstation 1 i still have both but tbh if youreally want to make oldschool boombap or "Alchemist" type beats you want to definitely get an mpc 2500 or one of the new ones it will change your life the sound and workflow is effortlessly amazing bro peace n bless...
this is the information i was fukcing seraching for my brother! i love you for sharing this! really appreciate it! i will get myself a freaking MPC 2500 if i can afford it LOL , jajaj but i swear bro i will get one, thank you bro! i just wanted to know what do i really need to start making big fat Funky old school Beats,
Late reply but I also learned how to make beats using MTV Music Generator on PS1 back in the day, around '99-'00, used the PC version too and then on to FL Studio as well. Your comment brought back good memories of the beginnings of learning to mix. Used to also look up beats on Soundclick (long before SoundCloud!) to listen to lol.
you gained a new subscriber. :) i really like the video and the way you explain, i learned alot from this and im about to go through your page and watch more of your videos. i just have a small suggestion if you could play the beat or the final result after the tutorial it's gonna be lit.🌹
@@NavieD yeah like if you watch simon servida as an example, he makes the tutorial then plays the beat in the end so that i can actually see the results after i learned from the tutorial you know. like as a viewer i see this is really important and helpful and this will also make us want to watch the whole video so we don't miss out the results!
@@NavieD it changes from time to time. A few months ago I tuned the Dilla / Slum village stuff a lot again. Lately I felt more like NaS - one love and the whole illmatic record. 👌 hard to decide
Discord Gang. Awesome video. Great tips! another good one would be, that alot of the old school beats, the drums weren't in perfect timing, so off setting the snare just a little bit or the kick, really brings in a humanized bounce.
Discord Gang protect me at all costs. Yeah, that's a great point. I mentioned that in my video I made a while back on different drum styles for beatmaking, but it would have been worth mentioning here. Dang it!
@@NavieD Again don't even worry bout it your watchers are picking up the tiny amount of slack you leave yo. Frfr I'm going through a really really hard time in life rn and this one video inspires me to keep creating and holding on so thanks man keep being who you are yo!
Hi Navie, great video, thank you so much. Hope there is more boom bap to come!. Question, the melody lines of the upright bass puzzles me. This is not something one bass player could actually play, or...? I tried to look up some sheet music for upright bass but it is all single notes. Could you please elaborate on when/why you use this? Sounds great but I would never ever have thought of a bass line like that myself.
Thank you Sonja! I am actually filming a sequel to this video today. As for the upright bass, my recommendation is more focused on the tonality of the sound and how well it fits with the aesthetic. Many of these beats sampled jazz songs, so it fits in with the genre pretty nicely. Sorry for the confusion. I just play it like a regular instrument using the piano roll in FL.
Just out of curiosity: how does it work if you want to sell sampled beats (on a platform like Beatstars)? Most of the time when I sample, the original sample is still recognizable, even though it has been chopped and pitched.
Most likely, the artist/label will be responsible for clearing the sample. But knowing this, many artists/labels avoid using sampled beats since they'd rather avoid the headache
