Here's my tip, I hope this will help people with the synergy between musical elements in their beats and save them some frustration looking for complementing sounds. This works particularly well with synthesized sounds as I think it gives the most flexibility for this technique. So you have some sounds already laid down in your track but you want to add more. You've been trying different sounds but can't seem to find something that fits with what you already have. Lets say you have your chords written but you are looking for a pluck sound to create a melody to go with the chords, you keep trying different sounds but nothing seems to feel quite right. What you can do is, rather than look for a totally new sound, you can repurpose the sound you've used for the chords. All you need to do is copy the chord sound (ie. the sound patch, not musical notes) but make some edits to it, shorten the decay on it to create a pluck sound, add some effects, maybe distortion, delay, eq, etc. You can also play the sound in a different octave to your chords to further differentiate between the two. By repurposing what you already have in the beat, you are automatically creating a sound that will sympathise well with the other element, as both sounds will have the same foundation, this will create an underlying cohesive feel between the two. Once you have done this don't forget to re-evaluate the sound you started with (ie. the sound you used for your chords) maybe go back to the chord sound and shave off a little bit of the upper frequencies so there is some space for your pluck fit in, again further differentiating between the two sounds. I know it sounds like a simple technique and seems pretty obvious but try it out next time you get stuck, I think you will be surprised with the results. With that said lets just take a step back for a second and think about the amount of time we as producers spend, clicking next on the preset menu of whatever instrument we are using, what if you actually already had the sound you were looking for? you just needed to edit it slightly, wouldn't that be kind of annoying to find out (sorry for dropping that one on you, I know how much it hurts). I'll leave you with one last thing to think about, maybe I'm crazy but I bet that you can actually complete the method I described and have some kind of melody etc. written into your track, in the time it takes you to find a suitable sound by clicking next on a preset menu... it's just a hunch that I have... I'm sorry for the long message, I hope this will make sense to others out there and I wish you all success on your music making journey. Peace! ☮️☮️☮️
🤯 😡producers forget this one simple trick. Why change the core of the sound that works when you can tweak the sound that already works into another one that works 😮
I always think, "Once a vocal is on this beat, what sounds will disappear, muddy-up and what sounds will still be heard and compliment the vocal?". Then I start eleminating unnecessary melodies and instruments.
this video tells the absolute truth, I discovered recently that mixing cannot help to improve a beat if this doesnt sound professional before mixing, even with reverb, saturation etc
Thank you Leo! That's something I definitely wanted to hit home. If a person is depending on the final mixing process for their beat to finally come together and sound good, it never will
This is literally like when an artist uses a beat. The original beat just sounds like a type beat but the engineers and producers who mix it finesse it so good
This dude is so good at making complex concepts extremely easy to understand he literally started with: you want your songs to sound better? "Then use better sounding samples"🤣🙏💀💯 *drops mic*
@@NavieD really though, you've helped me so much and inspired me so much... Do you charge for one on one lessons or workshops where you could help me with some of my beats?
i love you lol the way you explained the keep it simple concept changes everything for me, i had quit watching youtube for producing for the most part aside from the occasional refreshers because i felt like everything was made for beginners and im 3 years in now so i always feel like youtube fails me now because most of the time i click on videos, its about stuff i still do and already know so it becomes frustrating when i come to youtube for specific complicated problems and no one has videos but the way you explain things just hits different for an intermediate level even when its a beginner video, like the concept of keeping it simple meaning using less sounds to fill up the most space just hit me, other youtubers made it sound like you should use more simple rhythms and i always dismissed the idea because i just knew professional producers had very complicated rhythms and sounds so i would just change instruments after like 8 bars and put a ton of effects to compensate for what i misunderstood in the first place, but now that you explain it that way i think i can hit the next lvl and be just a little bit closer to becoming pro, thank you so much, now i will watch your videos all over again to see what i missed a few years ago!
This is super useful information and changing stock sounds is something I'd say I struggle with and even making more complicated bass notes. But I have been filling and simplifying my music more and more. Just doing things one at a time and as I produce more I've noticed my songs getting better and better. Thanks again for the tips!
YOOOO thanks so much 2 minutes in and I already made my beat 10 times better. You're the best on RU-vid. You just know what I don't know and what I may be lacking. ALWAYS. The sign of a great teacher
Yay you used my suggestion 🥰 I love this video so much you always explain what you are teaching very well. I definitely learned a lot of new things after watching this video. Thanks for the knowledge.
Dope I need to use you as my mentor I need to get good in my beat making. Thanks I really appreciate this channel. The way you teach it is perfect for me . Thanks again
It's a very useful tip to use less sounds and trying to make them sound fuller. Did you do a video on that? If not I would appreciate this because if I try to do this I don't really know what I do and most of the times the sounds don't really improve. Therefore I seldom use more than two to three plugins on one mixer track. And I got an idea for your video arrangement. I think it would be cool if you shortly summed up all points in the and as a little recap so people don't have to skip to the video to remember all tipps you gave at once. Plus we can screenshot it.
I’ve watched a few of your videos now and have subscribed. Excellent ability to show the viewer how to grasp a new concept. Some of your visuals make me believe you are also an artist, like you draw and paint perhaps 🤔 Anyhow, I find your content to be very useful and appreciate you, thank you.
Wow way more interesting than what I thought it would be ! It's way different than all these videos talking about levels and EQ and way more instructive thank you very much. Subscribing of course 😉
Hey, Navie D! I wanted to thank you for your videos, as you gave me and my friend Dean Vicious ideas for our music. One is REALLY big idea. So yeah.. we are from Latvia and we are a part of a self made band - ABC Rec -, hopefully to become studio/record lable. So the first idea you gave to Dean (you should check him out btw, hasn't started to become publicly known, just to mention) was to cutoff high frequencies using EQ (it was in a video where you explain how to give a more "room"/3d sound to production). We both used filter to cut off high frequencies, but, as Dean started to produce Trap, he liked the EQ approach better. It gives the sound more clarity than filter (at least to his ear) and he also thinks it has more control than filter. The second thing we (me) "took" from your lessons REALLY broke my heart. From one of your videos on sampling I took the idea to create "sample based Dre Days old school hip hop".. a genre of my own. I've already made the first song and I will leave you a comment when I upload it. I just hope it is something Dre has never done before. Thank you for that! As in return, we'll give you to big ones. First, is to pick THE DREAM one. Second, not as big one, but very helpful - start with family and close friends... then town.. If you ask me why I'm far from popular rn, I would say that guitar and rock music is my true passion... so yeah.. Hope you got the messege right about the tips I gave you in exchange. If "not sure what he meant", then reply to this comment and I'll contact you via email or something.. Wish you the best! I WANT you to make it BIG! Thank you! Sids Višas
This video was put together perfectly! Adding this to an education playlist I have it's mostly beatstars business education but I'm putting some mixing stuff in that playlist to. It's a public playlist I just put together this morning so it may not help much now but over time your vids should get some plays off of it. I'll definitely come back to it. Thanks!
@@NavieD You're welcome. Sorry I haven't been around for awhile. I got a new synth and 2 newer standalone MPCs and their whole software that I had to learn how to use. I had to learn new terminologies and everything. Lol FL was great for getting me back into making music but I started feeling like I was missing something. Lol I started on hardware back in the early 2000s then screwed my life up for awhile. Finally got my stuff together and wanted to take this more serious so I bought an entire studio setup. It was more something I had to do for myself rather than an improvement on the music. Waking up and seeing all that stuff every day let's me know that I accomplished something. That and I'd like to start finding local talent and the setup I have now looks way better than the old laptop I had. I could've got some midi controllers an interface and a mic and called it a wrap. But I always wanted an MPC and now I have 2 of them. Lol Anyway, that was probably more than you wanted or cared to hear. But in conclusion I kind of know how to do everything I need to do as far as how to get everything to work the way I need it to in the MPC and MPC software, now I can focus more on all this other stuff again like sound design, mixing and whatnot. FYI, MPC is AWESOME but if anyone here that reads this decides to go that route, know that it is a whole nother beast you'll have to learn that won't be easy. However, all the stuff you learn in whatever software or hardware you're using does cary over, in some cases there's different ways of going about it and different terminologies. I DONT recommend making a drastic switch like this unless you're like me and prepared for the transition or you would just like to add another tool to your current workflow (because you can use it as a plug-in in FL). All I can say is the transition in some ways was easier than I expected and I'm other ways harder than I expected. Anyway, gotta get back at it, if you actually read all this, I salute you for reading one of my ADHD rants. 🤣 🎧🎵 Back to the music!🎵🎧
Hey Navie another great helpful and informative video. Aside that, i wanted to also see how you would bring these new video effects to make it interesting. well u aced it . Splendid use of screen space by using a slanted split screen , felt really fresh to see a tutorial this way. i could notice the different types of pop up dialog boxes with specific colors indicating the type of information one would expect . and the suggested links on top are precise and perfectly placed with the content you were talking about. and the video pop ups were also well timed . Dope video man ! till now for me the best video so far in your channel in terms of video effects introduced .
