My 2 cts : - clean the fret wire with naphtha beforehand.. it often comes quite oily and that oil doesn’t mix well with glue… - when prepping & cutting your frets : go backwards from fret 22 to fret 1 If you cut fret 20 too short, it will fit fret 19 or 18.. so it’s not wasted 😜

I made my own fret end beveling block, with Rock Maple and medium cut mill file, and made it so it cuts a 70 degree bevel instead of 45 degrees ( the industry standard). The reason is, I can then use my fret detailing files to make the fret ends semi-hemispherical. That gives you a smidge more of usable fret width for the high and low E strings. It looks classy, feels good, plays great!

Thanks guys. Going from the hammer to the press was definitely a game changer for me. It takes almost all the stress out of the job (me and the neck).

also you can apply a bit of furniture wax to fretboard, just a touch, before you glue the fret so that the superglue doesn't bone to the wood.

Hey Chris have you ever tested to see if an adjustable neck affects sound or how it affects sound in a guitar?I'm thinking about doing an adjustable neck on my next guitar but at the same time I'm designing a new neck joint which I may or may not be able to make adjustable. Still deciding. Thanks for the fretting tips.

Have the Stewmac fret press that everyone complains is too cheap. Soon as I got it I pulled it apart and diamond plated the inner piston and cylinder to a polished shine. Sort of like how we would polish frets. Chased all the treads, cleaned it out with brake cleaner and oiled it. Adjusted it to as minimal play as possible. Now it is a usable fret press that feels broken in. Noticed on a warmoth video they have their fret press at eye level. Maybe ill make a nealimg bench to get down low and see better.

Cool. As a novice , and using a hammer method, i wish i could find locally liquid superglue cure in cca 1 minute and not 10 seconds. So for now i have to hammer the frets in and then apply superglue on the sides of the frets and hope for capillary reaction to work. Question - what do you think about stainless steel frets for acoustic guitar?
@deadforalldead3576

Started my first guitar build today, already started sanding the sides already but i do have a question. What’s the reason of stacking 2 .45” walnut for the sides? I completely forgot to ask my instructor about it.

So many different ways to do frets but at the end of the day - if they are well seated, properly leveled, crowned and polished and they feel comfortable in the hand then you're all good. A 'best' method doesn't exist.

Chris, I assume you've evaluated using wax on the fretboard to facilitate clean-up of squeeze-out. Is it just easier with your polish & chisel method, or are there other advantages?
@ZeGlob1
@ZeGlob1 4 месяца назад
Problem is that it wax gets into the fret slot, glue won’t work

Is the gold fretwire for aesthetics?
@SolaChristus
@SolaChristus 2 месяца назад
Whilst it definitely can be used for aesthetics (looks perfect with gold hardware), it also has several major advantages. Namely it is harder than N/S frets, but also not as hard as S/S frets. So it has long term (life long?) durability. From the luthiers point of view it works much easier than S\S frets so it’s a major time saver. And finally once properly polished it lasts basically forever…no tarnishing.

It’s unfortunate to loose that much fret material, when ordering in quantity it would be nice to get them in one piece rolled up in a 20 inch radius maybe?

The new SM wire isn't EVO gold, right? The supplier quit making that alloy. I've heard the new SM stuff isn't as good and corrodes.

Yeah when I ordered fret wire from Jescar they said they are not stocking evo anymore? Personally I like stainless steel frets when it is someone else's tools doing the work. But when it comes to using my tools. Nickel. Lol. What do I care if my frets wear out prematurely. I'll just relevel em again

I picked this up from a GAL article...when you install frets in order up or down the neck, the pressure towards the unfretted board accumulates introducing a back bow tendency. This is especially noticeable if you fret your fingerboard before glueing it to the neck. Being a belt and suspenders kind of guy, I have incorporated this into my fret pressing, doing the ends, then one in the middle, and then dividing each remaining space as I go. This way the compression/distortion is mostly equalized;)

why?? Why not cut the binding along with the necks (fret saw) and have the fret extend into the edge of the neck?? would that not be more comfortable for the player? I know it's "factory correct", but you guys bust thru the wall and make it more player friendly.
