How to Make an Automatic Chicken Waterer with Nipple Drippers
Made up a chicken waterer for the girls cage over the past few days. This one is 25L/6½ gal in size & should last the 4 of them for at least a week if not longer I think.
A closed in waterer like this will also help to keep the water cleaner. It was a constant battle with the girls scratching dirt into their old feeder making it necessary to clean it every second day.
This waterer definitely took some of the "AWWW DAAAD" out of the daily chicken choirs.
BUY WATER NIPPLES IN TH USA HERE
www.amazon.com...
The drill I used was an 8.5mm. 8.8mm or 11/32 are the suggested sizes for the tap size..
The tap used was a 1/8th BSP
*UPDATE*
This system has now been modified to include another watering station & has been connected to a large reservoir.. A bit of a look at the set up now can be found here
• Modified nipple watere...
Hope you enjoy this quick DIY & your Chooks are doing well. Cheers all. 🐔 🐔

Rob Bob's Backyard Farm & Aquaponics nice one !! If you install 1 or 2 wires above the pipe, it will prevent the chickens jump on it. They might think it is a perch for them. Chicken weight avg 1-1.5 kg lol

I currently have 3 nipples in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. You have to watch it very closely in the summer time and not let them run out of fresh water they will dehydrate quickly and die. I have also seen bigger barrels with a automatic waterer using a float.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 11 лет назад
Very true & have seen a few very good feeders made that way.. The pipe with nipples will eventually be fed through a pipe connected to a large barrel located elsewhere in the garden.. The small drum is a bit of a stop gap measure as we went away for a week & needed the waterer up & running.. Hope to have a clip up on how it will be finely plumbed up in a few weeks.. Have a good one Steve..

We use these to water our chickens and ducks. We put 3 of them in the bottom of two 5 gallon buckets. Just drilled the holes and screws them in by hand. Amazing they don't leak. We'll need to upload that video. Best thing we ever did in the coop. Thanks for the excellent video.

Hi there Aleisha Kropf.. A drum should be fine & you could use a small 20-25mm or 3/4-1" bulkhead fitting to attach the dripper assembly.. I have now hooked ours up via a 20mm/3/4" hose to a 50L/13gal (US) drum that has a float valve in it to keep the water topped up at all times if that gives you a few more ideas.. I posted about the modification on the Modified nipple waterer with Chicken update, Jan 2014.. clip if that helps.. Cheers & have fun with the build, Rob..

I built a two tiered waterer, so that both the pullets and the hens have good access. Instead of a reservoir, it's connected to a faucet spigot. The nipples work best with only 1 psi, so I used a thread on pressure reducing valve like RVers use. You can find them on Amazon for $20 to $30. I couldn't thread in the nipples to the pvc without damaging them. My pipe is 10 years old, so maybe it's too hard (?). I even used the 11/32" bit required by the instructions. So, I threaded the holes with a 3/8-24 USA tap and wrapped the threads of the nipples with teflon tape. This worked perfectly and doesn't even leak at 40 psi. Thanks for the video! BOK!

Hi there.. Might pay for you to do a search as there are quite a few different types of dripper systems out there now.. I still like these as they are simple & the girls can't scratch dirt into them like some of the cup style ones.. Have fun with the build & chooks.. Rob..

Hi Rob, Great videos - just finished making an identical system to the one in your video. Just a few notes I felt were worth sharing: - Nipple drippers purchased from ebay may vary slightly... mine looked identical to Robs but needed a slightly larger hole to thread themselves into. A 23/64 drill bit made all the difference. If yours aren't going in, try that slightly larger drill bit. - Rather than use silicone plumbers tape around the nipple threads, I opted for a 7mm x 1.9mm black rubber O-ring, replacing the clear rubber washer that came with the dripper. Tightened up they provide a perfect seal. That last one sounds like an obscure item but Aldi often sell an assortment of O ring sealers in a handy pack. Comes with fibre washers, black rubber washers and white PVC washers. Well worth picking up when they're on sale. Thanks for sharing the design Rob, you've made my chook related chores that much easier and I can finally bin that disgusting green algae farm that was the previous water feeder!
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 10 лет назад
Nice one & thanks for the tips :) I think the yellow ones are slightly thinner again.. I saw the O rings at Aldi the other week but kept on walking.. Kicked myself on the weekend while building the fish farm as I could of used a few... Shall grab them next time ;) Cheers & hope the chooks enjoy your work.. Have a great one..

I found with the aquaponic pipe work that the bonds didn't take real well & failed so went with the primer here.. Could of just been a bit of surface dust as well or the type of glue I used too.. I haven't seen the clear glue here.. All they had at the trade centre was the blue for low pressure & I think pink for high.. Shall ask next time I'm in as it would help to keep the aquaponic pipe work looking nice & tidy.. Thanks for the info & have a great one Tim, Rob.

Hey Rob; Thanks for the cool idea. I just wanted to mention that priming is unneccesary when gluing PVC. All you require is the glue which melts down the PVC enough to bond the fittings securely. It is also easier to complete one union at a time so you don't have a bunch of glue covered bits to worry about getting at quickly. Also, we use a glue which is pretty much clear so aesthically you don't have the blue staining.

It is tremendously helpful to twist the pvc a full 360° as you mate the 2 pieces to be glued. This will insure the glue has no streaks from pushing straight on (caused by bur's or other debris) which will create a weak spot in your glue job that can lead to a leak. Basically it insures the glue is evenly smeared all around.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 10 лет назад
Thanks Joseph.. Started to do that as well as filing off the cut slightly to ensure better spreading of the glue.. Picked that up from a master plumber here on YT somewhere.. Have a great one mate :)

I know this is an old video ad maybe you already know this but i have some advice about blue glue, landscaper here, pop the pipe offset about 90 degrees and twist until its in the right direction. Hi Karen.. It has only been in place for 2 weeks so it really hasn't had time to go slimy.. I hope to have the drum & watering arrangement changed so it will be fed from a light proof container/drum in a few weeks time.. That should stop any algae build up when Summer arrives I think.... We are just coming into winter here but as it never drops below 0°C/32°F for more than a few hours at a time I can't help you when it comes to freezing temperatures sorry.. Hope that helps a bit.. Rob

The drum will be shaded where it sits at the moment but am also looking at changing the set up a bit so the water flows down via a buried irrigation pipe to the drip assembly... Having it under ground should help to chill the water a bit as it comes down from the container... Is on the list of jobbies to do & am slowly getting to it :/ Cheers, Rob

Hi there.. No rooster needed unless you want to breed your own chooks, the girls will lay fine without one.. The feed bill will depend on how much foraging they can do for them selves.. We found that we went through very little feed when the original 3 girls had the run of the yard.. Now they a penned up most of the time they go through a 25kg bag of laying mash every 3-4 weeks.. They also get greens from the garden as well as excess kitchen scraps.. Was sprouting grain for them as well.. TBC

Hi Rob, I love this! If I ever get a bigger flock I'll definitely take the time to make a watering station. So far the birds drink from a regularly cleaned pond along with the rabbits and other house pets and wildlife. However since getting the ducks the pond has become something of a mess. So I'll need to fix both the pond and make a good clean watering station for all the animals including the chickens. Thanks for sharing!! Scarlett

How to Grow a Garden with Scarlett Damen Morning Scarlett.. The drippers are a great way to get clean water to the birds.. No pond here as we have feral cane toads that take them over.. They managed to climb into a bathtub pond we had set up by using the garden bed that was next to it as a ladder.. They poisoned most of the fish but we saved some that now live inside the house in a tank.. Would like to set up another one at some point a it did a great job at attracting frogs into the patch as well.. Thanks & all the best, Rob..

Its called a "Hand Tap". It is a bit of over kill & would be an expensive buy just for this build alone I think. Using a 9mm or 11/32 drill bit & screwing straight into there is a lot easier & is what I have used since when making some up for others.. If you do want to buy a tap for it I used a 1/8 BSP & used a 8.5mm drill bit to make the hole.. Is a bit smaller drill size than is required for the tap but as it is just plastic the tap cut the thread fine.. Hope that helps some.. Rob.

That is a great idea.... The only thing I think I would do differently is add a longer neck extending from the container. That way it will allow me to keep the water container on the outside of the coop for easy access. Maybe there is a quick disconnect device that would allow me to remove the pipe from the container if needed. Thanks for the great video- it stems a lot of ideas.

My concern with that would be it leaking & wasting water. Would be ok for us on mains but for someone in a rural setting it could cause quite a problem.. We went through a drum in 36 hours as one of the nipples didn't close off properly. It has been removed as I didn't want to risk it failing again I can see where it would be a benefit to connect it to mains but I won't be. The aqua miser might also be built to a higher standard than these as well. Thanks for that Terry & have a good one :)

I have thought of that but think it will be fine for the time frame I need this one.. The store where I get the drums from said they will be getting some light proof ones soon.. This one will be used to sore molasses in once I get the new one... Thanks & have a great one..

This looks like a great setup Rob! Wish my city didn't have a ban on keeping backyard chickens. Have a great day and happy gardening!

I made a similar set up but it seems the water gets stuck and needs an air hole. I used a 5 gallon bucket connected to pvc but water does not seem to flow.

It doesn't get that cold here in the subtropics so it isn't something I have had to think about.. I have heard of people using aquarium heaters in water feeders to help stop them from freezing but not sure how well it would work in this situation.. Hope that helps a bit.. Rob.

That's the way to do it hey RB. It's what I will be doing when I return. I remember as a kid in Bankstown, my grandpa always had to go out and clean the water up in the chook pen. It was a mess. Nipples just make good sense to me. Thanks for how to video.

This is a great idea too. I actually had already made some water buckets with these nipples before viewing your video. I hang them inside the coops. I love them.

I think they are a great way to save water & keep it clean at the same time no matter how they're installed.. Cheers & have a great one, Rob.. :)

Then they have not only benefited the chooks they have given you even greater status in your eldest eyes. Chicken nipples .... bringing families closer where ever they are implemented. Keep up with the great videos I really like your style. Jesus loves you.

I saw a variation on this today where someone used a new float valve from a toilet and installed it inside and connected it to the water supply. When the bucket gets low on water, the valve opens and it automatically refills.

So the cost to feed each chicken will depend on how much foraging or home grown feed you can provide them yourself.. I think that they still need some sort of supplemental feed in most cases.. Hope that is of some help to you & have fun with the chooks, I think they are great animals to have around.. Cheers, Rob.

Sounds good Charles.. Looking to set up some floating rafts against the fence with the chook yard.. The wicking bed there has been compromised by mango roots I think.. If you feel like posting a clip of your system I would like to have a look.. Cheers & have a great one Charles..

You have some smart chooks there Rob! Very cool watering setup there as well! Shame we can't get plants to drink water that way!

Hi there :) I put 1 in for each bird but you quite often see them drinking together from one nipple so probably get away with having less.. The only time I see the girls all wanting to feed/drink together is when we top up the feed/water containers other wise they all fairly much do their own thing.. Hope that helps a bit.. Rob.

I think it would be too much for mains pressure & the drum gives you a safety net in case one leaks.. Has happened with one from here so I just replaced it.. Hope that helps.. Rob.

Thanks. I like watching your videos. I made a bulk chicken feeder much like the one you showed. I especially like the simplicity of your work, and low cost. For this waterer, one way to make it simpler would be to install the nipples directly into the bottom of the container, and suspend the container at the correct height for the chickens. This is what I have done, and seems to work very well for my small flock.

Use thicker wall pipe schedule 40 or even 80 pipe to have more threads.

Suggestion.... If you do get algae starting to grow in the 20 litre tank. Remembering that algae needs sunlight to grow, you might try using a black container instead. That should keep the sunlight out better than the semi-transparent one you've used.

Rob: Very Cool! I just sent several of your vids to a buddy of mine in Phoenix AZ who just bought 6 laying hen chicks… 3 Rhode Island Reds, & 3 “Ideals” (whatever they are?!). His first chicken was rescued in a K-Mart department store parking lot, appropriately named “K”. The best pet he’s owned. An egg a day she gave the family for years. K is no longer with us, and I threatened to buy him some chicks… he beat me to the punch. Keep up with the GREAT vids! See, you do make a difference. Thanks again! A cold one is raised in your direction! Cheers! Eric Seattle area, Washington State

Rob Bob If I may borrow some great words from your neck of the woods "No worries mate!" Great vids, keep them coming! The family in Phoenix has applied your ideas (and still do); thought they were great. Hi to the "girls" and what a beautiful tree snake! Those colors are unreal! Cheers in your direction! Eric
