The MOP FLY is arguably the easiest fly to tie. It's the perfect beginner fly. I believe this way makes an easy fly even easier to tie. Not only is it easier. It's quicker, more durable AND about the nicest way a mop can look.
I am a big believer in having confidence in the fly on the end of my tippet. Having a nicely tied fly plays a big role in that. This confidence makes you simply fish better, which equates to more fish in the net. A MOP can even look pretty.
I like using the Mop in a couple different scenarios. 1. After you have fished a nice deeper run, before I leave I like to put a mop on to show the fish something different. Sometimes this will trigger trout to bite that may have turned down your nymph. 2. When you encounter windy conditions, using a mop will help stabilize your drift by "anchoring" it. It's harder for the wind to rip you out of your drift because the size, weight and volume of the mop.
Every nympher should have a row a Mops in their box.
Tight lines!
