This is great. However, the moment we define the Initiative issue type, the EPIC is level 1 and Initiative is level 2 and we dont know how to change that. That's where we are blocked.
You currently can't do it. Atlassian is releasing something very soon that will allow you to do it, but right now, nothing can be in between the epic and the story.
I wish you would add the link to the previous video or edit it to add a future video once you've added it. It's so frustrating to hear you say, go look at a previous video. User experience tip: Don't make us have to go searching. Include the link in your comments.

I'm pretty sure Initiatives are staying. I believe they are changing how you will connect them together but if you are on Jira Premium, my understanding is that you'll still be able to have initiatives. I'll keep an eye out and let you know.

I am literally watching all your videos to set things up for my company, you are god send. Thanks a bunch for putting all the videos out. I was able to make epic child of initiative. But I need to have Theme above Initiative which will tie all the work to Corp OKR. I want to ask if it is possible to map a single initiative to multiple theme. Theme is top most on the hierarchy configuration followed by Initiative and so on.
Thanks for the video. I have odd things happening in Jira Cloud, where I can drag epics onto my Initiative within the Advanced Plan view, but this does not populate the Parent Link or Parent fields 🤔 Similarly assigning Iniatives to the Parent Link field does not parent them. It is also annoying that parent link does not seem to be something you can meaningfully query, i.e. show me all children of Initiative X.
Thanks for the great video, exactly what I was looking for! One question, when I'm in my 'Plans' tab and go to Filters for Hierarchy, 'Task' is not appearing here. Do you know how I can change this to have tasks as part of my hierarachy?
The projects that you are using as your sources . . . must contain the Task issue type. Can you confirm that you do indeed have the Task issue type in your project?
hi alex, I am not able to create a child epic directly under the initiative, can you please guide me how to do the same, I am only getting the option to create a sub task.
Hello Alex, I tried creating initiative as you mentioned but seeing this error "Issue type 10000 cannot have parent but a parent is specified" any idea what can cause that?
Thanks for the help! I do have a question - after I have created my Initiative and i'm in the Initiative details screen. I'd like to add a child epic but the only option is to add a subtask. Is there a way to have the ability to add an epic from this screen instead of adding the Initiative and epics separately and then later linking them with the parent link?
That is a bit tricky. The easiest way to create the initiatives and the epics without linking later is to use the Advanced Roadmap and create all your issues there. In that screen, you can create you initiative, epics, drag/drop, and/or create children epics from that screen. Otherwise, you just have to go to the epic and link up using the parent link.
Hi, Thanks for this video. I want to ask - I want to have the whole level of initiatives in a separate project. This is so my management can look there since this is what interest them - the visual of the full functionality cross-projects. So, I want epics and below on all projects, but all parent initiatives on another project which is like "above" all. Will this work? Will I be able to use plans the way you showed?
Yes, that will work. The "child" projects will not be able to have any initiatives, but in the parent link of the epic, you can reference the initiative in the main "parent" project. This works for now. . .Atlassian is making some changes this Summer so I'll keep an eye out and update the video accordingly. But for now, you should not have any problems.
Can we link epics from multiple JIRA instances into 1 initiative? Say i have JIRA 1 and JIRA 2 instances. I want some of my epics under JIRA 1 to be linked to an Initiaitve sitting on JIRA 2 instance. Is that doable?
I'm assuming when you say a Jira instance you mean a project? If so, then yes, you can link epics from multiple different Jira projects to a single initiative.

My project settings do not look like the project settings in the demo. Did Jira have a major UI flow overhaul? I am an admin/owner and with a premium sub. Is there another attribute my account needs to see "Screens"?

I would recommend you create the initiatives in a different project that is restricted to only certain people. Then, in your advanced roadmap. . . put it all together.
