How to Make an LED Chandelier with Music Visualizer out of 2x4s --

I made a 2x4 LED Chandelier for the Modern Maker Podcast Two 2x4 Challenge. I deconstructed, then reconstructed, two 2x4s, so that they had channels for LEDs. I then made a rectangle from the channeled 2x4, cut slits with a router, and threaded an LED strip through. Oh yea, and it goes from a respectable adult chandelier to a music-syncing party light at the touch of a button....

The awesome thing about this design is it works perfect as a warm light for the room or you could have turned it sideways and had a big picture frame for artwork or use it in the bathroom around a vanity mirror. Amazing work wish I could step into your mind creativity wise

I'll be frank. I always hated these kinds of designs. Never once any got my interest or had me staring at the beauty and respect for such cool designs. 😔😔 But u do clean works, nice, eye-catching and beautiful designs. I love every design you made. Literally, even the ones you haven't had the chance to record in the past. Stalked ur vids for the past two hours 😂😂😂 I clicked on this cz u had me completely interested in seeing your designs and ideas. Normally I avoid light inlays and whatnot, but I changed my mind after seeing this. Truly, creativity has no limits. I really wish I knew about ur channel before. Would've helped with my creativity during my launching year at interior design. (I kinda lack that hehehe) But it'd never too late to catch up and be creative. Get out of boring designs and be original. I'm still in the learning after all. Thank you for sharing your works, truly helps us have better perspective and well, cool ideas. Major support. Looking forward to seeing tones! Would love to see some bathroom designs, and a house tour, someone once pointed out and I think it'd be amazing. Never gonna get bored of watching ur vids.

Overall great project! There are a few things I would do differently, if you dont mind. For one the chandelier looks kind of dimm, you could remedy this by using more leds by either taking a strip with tighter spacing or laying in more then one strip. Another way would be to paint the inside of the channel white, which should give you at least a little more light. My favorite way would be to a layer of aluminium foil (preferably reflective side up) in the channel. I generaly mount my LEDstrips in aluminium u-profiles to reflect as much light in viewing direction as possible and help dissipate heat. Furthermore I absolutely love indirect lightning and would have taken the chance to install additional LEDs on top of the chandelier to shine at the rooms ceiling. What i don't like is the tendency nowadays to "mud" every piece of wood with a dark stain. The whole video appears kind of dark to me, so maybe i'm exaggerating, but I would've liked the wood a bit brigther and with more contrast.

good job with the design looks nice, but allow me to point out two things 1: the maintenance of the LED will be very difficult, knowing the color will change or will stop working soon because you did not use an aluminum profile to act like a heat sink for the strip. 2: the dark spots on the acrylic are a bit annoying, you could have distributed the light in a better way by placing the strip on the both sides instead of the top part of the inner side. over all 8 out of 10 good job.
@modustrial
@modustrial 6 лет назад
Thank you! This is do definitely just a proof of concept. Also, the 5V LED strips I used generate much less heat than 12V strips, so thermal management isn't as much of a concern

Hey an advice if you allow me. Do not wear gloves when you use a table saw because if the saw blade catches your glove you are going to regret it there is no way to unclog the glove once catch it and unfortunately I had to see a friend lose 4 fingers of left hand in accident; no matter how professional one is sometimes one should not tempt fate. Greetings from Honduras !!

It looks amazing. Well made, but mostly great idea that turned out very nice. Is it bright enough to shine enough light on a table below or is it more a mood light?
@modustrial
@modustrial 7 лет назад
P. Muis It would work as a light over a dining room table, but would be more of a mood light if illuminating a whole room. The design with the slits sacrifices lumens for aesthetics, since many of the leds in the strip dont line up with a slit and are blocked. You could increase light output significantly by using a 144 leds/m strip (I used a 60 leds/m strip), or by using individual ws2812 leds and wiring a few of them to line up precisely with each slit (this would be an incredibly painstaking process, however).

Sure, shoot me a message and I can email you the code. As for parts, you'll need an arduino, an electret microphone, a potentiometer, and a button to switch modes. The LEDs have to be individually controllable. I haven't found a US seller for the warm white/cool white/ amber individually controllable LEDs (SK 6812 WWA), so I had to get them from Aliexpress: www.aliexpress.com/item/Best-Price-1m-5m-Addressable-SK6812-RGBW-led-strip-WWA-4-Color-in-1-Led-Waterproof/32768952249.html?spm=2114.01010208.3.9.vU1Koj&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_2_10152_10065_10151_10068_10130_10136_10137_10060_10155_10062_437_10154_10056_10055_10054_10059_303_100031_10099_9912_10103_10102_10096_10052_10053_10142_10107_10050_10051_5030015_10084_10083_10080_10082_10081_10178_10110_519_10111_10112_10113_10114_10182_10078_10079_10073_10123_10189_142-9912,searchweb201603_13,ppcSwitch_7&btsid=c12f48a1-1203-4baf-99ca-0c2bf098ae76&algo_expid=c61dae3d-5092-4156-bfca-280b1f0b6a3c-1&algo_pvid=c61dae3d-5092-4156-bfca-280b1f0b6a3c

Super original idea great job! What type of blade did you use to cut the plexi?
@modustrial
@modustrial 7 лет назад
@Kevin Larouche - I just used a Dewalt 60-tooth saw blade. (I've also used the standard blade that came with my table saw, and it works as well.) In general, I've found you can cut plexi with just about anything you would use to cut wood. However, the heat will cause the plexi to melt on the blade so you have to be careful and not cut too much at once.

Great Build! Im curious to know more about led and arduino controller build. Are you using "magic led strip" (addressable led's) or standard? I am guessing you would have to use magic strip (as they often call it) to get the audio sensing movement? Thanks.

Thanks! Yes, I'm using individually controllable LEDs, in this case SK6812 WWA strips. I used the same products in my Rings of Saturn pendant light build, and that video includes product links in the video description.

What do you cover cuts in the wood with? Plastic stripes?

Really cool!! What thickness plexi is that and where you get it?
@modustrial
@modustrial 7 лет назад
It is pretty thick, probably 3/8". Would you believe I found like 6 sheets of it (4' - 6' long) in the storage area of my condo when I moved in, left by a few owners before me? :)

That was too fast for me. How did you insert the LED-Stripes? Did you cut them?
@modustrial
@modustrial 6 лет назад
+Florian Wiedenfeld just threaded them thru and pulled them thru the channels. There are holes cut on each corner of the top to give access to work the LED strips around the corners.
