How to make an Octopus for a Premature Baby (No Sew, Crocheted Octopus for a Preemie)

I have been making Octopus for Preemie's for a few years now. They are my go to quiet time project. They are a fun quick make and you can often donate them to your local NICU. It is essential though that you use cotton yarn it is less likely to shed loose fibres.
OCTOPAL FACT: The octopus or "octopus" acts as a calming aid for premature babies. The tentacles replicate the umbilical cord, which babies hold onto in the womb. With tentacles to hold on to, the babies are less likely to pull out tubes and essential monitoring equipment that are attached to their bodies.

On the ruffle that's a single crochet, Half double , and a double , Not as stated single double and triple .

I really love this pattern and it was so easy to follow. However, I found it much easier to embroider the eyes and mouth and crochet the skirt before stuffing. Thank you for the pattern.

Thank you for the tutorial! I'm not sure where Ive gone wrong on the ruffle though because mind just turned out all the same length and was more like a skirt. So I did in the first loop single crochet and half double ( yarn over pull through) then in the next loop I did double crochet ( yarn over pull through 2 pull through 2 again) then in the next loop I did half double crochet and single. And then repeated this sequence 🤔

Hello from Florida, USA! I learned more than How to Crochet an Octopus from this video. I wasn't familiar with "expat," so I looked it up. I couldn't remember where Guyana is, so I looked it up. Just as easy to extend the tentacles with some extra chains. Note though that the charity guidelines for NICU octopus states that for safety reasons the tentacles shouldn’t exceed 22cm.

Hi there, I'm wondering how you keep the tentacles like curly? Mine are all over the place
@njcraftycreations
@njcraftycreations Год назад
Mine are a mess initially when I make them but I apply the twirling approach once I make them all. So I twist each one individually in the same direction to get the corkscrew, that works for me. There is a little bit in the video explaining it. Hope that helps! 💕🐙🧶

So pleased you liked it, I am still learning how to make tutorials ☺️🐙🧶 you could try contacting your local neonatal unit or there is a charity called Octopus for a Preemie UK that may be able to advise better, they also have a lot of good information on the requirements for the U.K. such as is should be cotton yarn so the fibres don’t come off etc. I started making them in Qatar for a local crochet group there and they gathered and distributed to the hospitals they partnered with. 💕🐙

Confused on how you thread the needle to get the loop. Dumbest question but really want to see it.
@njcraftycreations
@njcraftycreations Год назад
I fold the thread in half and then thread the needle. I make sure that there the thread fold is, is my thread end and that is the loop I use. Hope that makes sense.

Do you recommend only using Cotton? I only have 100% acrylic, but it’s not for a premie.
@njcraftycreations
@njcraftycreations 11 месяцев назад
I recommend cotton for premature babies as it sheds less, it’s softer on the babies skin and is easy to wash. I have made some in a cotton/acrylic blend before but I didn’t gift them to premature babies.

You can slow the pace on the video using the options on the video itself and there are subtitles available. 100% you can use safety eyes for children 3 years and older, but you certainly can’t for premature babies.
