Arches do an oil paper pad, ready to use. It’s called Arches HUILE - is 100 percent cotton and treated internally.

The oil paper pads or blocks are nice in terms of painting on them, but a sketchbook is so much more comfortable. It's also a bit difficult to really store loose pages from an oil paper pad. When at the same time a sketchbook with oil paintings can become a lovely collection of art works. The only 'issue' I've got with painting in a sketchbook, is how an 'accidental masterpiece' in it is a bit harder to put up for sale hahahah. Then again, a sketchbook does provide a care-free way of doing studies, experimenting and so on.

@@GuenevereSchwien it worked pretty well the paper I used was 165gsm and it was mostly flat and only a little bit was buckled. I realised that it is really important to make sure to paint the layers of acrylic medium evenly so that no section buckles

I know you can by pads of oil paint prepped paper, but having a sketchbook is really nice. I'm actually surprised no manufacturers have seen this need and produced one.

I agree! I would love it if someone made these. I have also been looking for a daily sketch book with good paper and the dates printed and I can't find one.

How do you clean your gesso brush? Water? Soap?

Great vid. But please clarify why you used acrylic medium as a base layer over two coats of gesso. I would think that straight away 2 gesso coats would do the job. How does the acrylic medium help?

If I can answer this, I've found that using an acrylic wash as the base allows me to tone the canvas before painting. I often do not work straight on white, but prefer to warm or cool the tone of the painting with a base color. It, then, acts like a gesso. You can use gesso and then a wash if you like!

I am not 100% sure now, but my usual palette is the one I use in my color wheel video, of alizuran crimson, cadmium red, cadmium yellow, lemon yellow, cyan, ultramarine, Prussian blue, and titanium white.

Hi, I wanted to ask about materials substitutes. I have Strathmore Watercolor paper 400 Series, which is claimed as acid-free, and Gamblin Oil painting Ground. I googled to find out if your materials can be substituted by that I have, seems that yes, but I also wanted to know your opinion. It will be enough just to cover the paper with the ground or should I use something additionally? P.S. at the beginning I wanted to order all of them, but find out that it gonna be a little bit over my budget and decide to try leftovers that I already have )

That is great that you are able to make use of the materials you already had. Yes, you can use any watercolor paper and any gesso(ground) I do like to seal the page with GAC100 before putting the ground just to make sure my pages will last for years. You can you any acrylic sealer for this. Good luck. Hope you enjoy your painting process! 😁

Is there a alternativ to glassline Paper? Sandwich Paper for example? I know its fat/oilproof but not waterproof. So you think that will do the job?

I would suggest tracing paper, Or parchment paper rather than wax paper.

I am not sure, but any acrylic is better than nothing. And acrylic gesso would help.

How do you wash your brush out from gesso? Just in water.

But then one has to wait for the oil paint to at least touch dry before you put the glassine paper? Can you start one on the next page immediately?

i'm not an oil painter . did u wait until the paint dries before putting the glassine paper ? how long does it take for oil sketch like that to dry ?? and thank u in advance

Yes, you need the painting to dry before closing the book, before varnishing, or before putting the paper over it. I usually allow at least two-three days depending on how thick the paint is. If you paint thickly allow a week or more. Thanks for asking.

I'm planning on trying this with acrylic... do you think if I gessoed the back side I could also paint on the back as well?

Yes, if you get the water color sketchbook the pages are thick enough that you can use both sides, the only issue is that the two paintings may get stuck together when you close the book, I'd suggest using a piece of parchment paper between the pages to prevent sticking. You can buy this in the baking section at a grocery store.

I've actually found a solution for the paintings sticking together-there is a "wax" (renaissance micro-crystalline wax polish-NOT a bees wax, as that can melt in high heat) that hardens as soon as you rub it on that will not only protect the painting, but create a smooth finish that does not stick. It's used by museum curators all over the world!

I use a fast drying medium when I paint in the sketchbook so it is usually pretty dry in 24 hours and if not I have a second sketchbook and switch back and forth between the two, if I want to paint in them everyday. Good question.

Yes it will. I have even used a normal paper sketchbook and all i do is prime it with gesso beforehand. :D

If you are using acrylic you don't need to use gesso.

i just buy huge tube of the cheapest white acrylic paint and palette knife it onto the paper - leave to dry thoroughly - way to go. it depends on the standard of your painting I suppose and I'm very amateur.

Can you prep the entire book before painting....or do you just do one at a time?

I usually do it as I go because of the drying time. It would take a few days to wait for each page to dry so you can turn the page and do it again, and again.

I do it one page at a time just because of the drying time. I don't want to spend days working on prepping the book. It feels like less time to just do it when I am going to paint in it.
