OWL
Hoop cutaway stabiliser in the 5x7, 6x10 or 8x12 hoop.
Load the design onto your machine. Use applique scissors for trimming the batting & fabric.
The first step, sewing the batting down and trimming it, is optional. It is so no batting is in the seam, making the blocks easier to join. If you prefer the batting in the seam just skip STEP 1 and proceed straight to STEP 2.
STEP 1 Repeat the stitch down and trimming process for Batting 1.
STEP 2 Stitch the placement line for the first background strip (we will be starting from the left working towards the right).
STEP 3 Place Fabric A right side up on top of the hoop covering the placement line. Stitch down.
Remove the hoop from your machine and trim only the fabric on the right hand edge to about 1-2mm from the stitching. Leave the excess fabric in the seams.
STEPS 4 - 7 Repeat the flip and fold process for the next tree strip and background strip, using Fabric B & Fabric C. Trim only the fabric on the right hand edges to about 1-2mm from the stitching.
STEPS 8 & 9 Repeat the applique process for the second tree, using another piece of Fabric D. Trim only the left and right hand edges 1-2mm from the stitching, leaving the excess fabric in the seams.
STEPS 10 & 11 Repeat the applique process for the last background strip, using Fabric E. Trim only the fabric on the left hand edge to about 1-2mm from the stitching. Leave the excess fabric in the seams.
Remove the hoop from your machine and trim along the bottom edges of each tree & background strip to ¼” from the stitching.
STEPS 12 & 13 Repeat the applique process for the top ground layer, using Fabric F. NOTE: if you used Batik fabric like we have, we suggest not trimming the fabric just yet. We prefer to do the quilting on top first and then trim the fabric. If you have used regular fabric, feel free to go ahead and trim the fabric before the quilting.
STEP 14 Embroider the quilting on the top ground layer.
If you didn’t trim the fabric earlier, please go ahead and remove the hoop from your machine and trim along the bottom and top edges of the top ground layer, 1-2mm from the stitching. Leave the excess fabric in the seams.
STEPS 15 & 16 Repeat the applique process for the bottom ground layer, using Fabric G. NOTE: if you used Batik fabric like we have, we suggest not trimming the fabric just yet. We prefer to do the quilting on top first and then trim the fabric. If you have used regular fabric, feel free to go ahead and trim the fabric before the quilting.
STEP 17 Embroider the quilting on the bottom ground layer.
If you didn’t trim the fabric earlier, please go ahead and remove the hoop from your machine and trim along the top edge of the bottom ground layer, 1-2mm from the stitching. Leave the excess fabric in the seams.
STEP 18 Embroider the decorative satin stitch in between the two ground layers.
STEP 19 Embroider the branch and the satin stitch around the tree.
STEP 20 Embroider the greenery on the tree.
STEP 21 Embroider the decorative satin stitch along the top edge of the top ground layer.
STEPS 22 & 23 Repeat the applique process for the hole in the tree, using a small piece of fabric. Trim.
STEP 24 Embroider the quilting in the hole in the tree.
STEP 25 Embroider the satin stitch around the hole in the tree.
STEP 26 Embroider the quilting detail on the trees.
STEPS 27 - 41 Embroider the Owl. We recommend turning your machine down to the slowest speed.
Remove your work from the hoop.
Trim the batting out of the seams if you skipped STEP 1.
Trim the seams to about ½ an inch.
