Ash Cakes - A Primitive and Bushcraft Bread or Preppers Food. Ash Cakes - A historical food dating back to when early humans first started to cultivate grains and process them into breads, pastes, gruels and meals.
How Ash Cakes are cooked are on the ashes of a fire so they are not to burn, but simple to become a chewy bread-like treat. This method of cooking is still in use today by many cultures around the world and as a favorite among many survivalists, bushcrafters and primitive skills enthusiasts.
Ash cakes were popular during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars as an easily carried food source. Ash Cakes have been a simple way to make a meal from simple ingredients like: ground whole wheat flour, pinch of salt and water. Ash Cakes have different names like; Fire Cakes, Indian Bread, Coal Crackers and Ash Bread.
In this video I show three different ways to cook Ash Cakes with three slight variation. I also use one of my favorite ingredients…duck fat as a topping and as a cooking additive. This is a simple backcountry/primitive cooking method that has lasted the tests of time.
If you can’t make it out to a campfire…no worries! You can cook Ash Cakes over stove top with a skillet on LOW HEAT or fry them up in a pan. Either way is fine. Remember, its A way not THE way! Just make it your way.
-1 Cup of Flour.
-Pinch of salt or seasoning to taste.
-Add water and mix until a dough ball is formed that is not wet and will not stick to your hands.
-Flatten out to desired size.
-Place on white ash (fried in fat or roasted over coals).
-Turn until golden or slightly charred (or until you deem ready).

Great vid Donny. In Australia we roll it into a long sausage like shape, wrap it around a stick and roast them over the fire which leaves a nice crust with a soft light centre we call damper. Very traditional Aussie food that was very commonly made by swagmen in the Great Depression. Have a good one!

He's right. I came across these as "journey cakes" or "jonny cakes". People carried them on adventures all throughout history, in one form or another. They're light weight, they're filling, they last forever, and they're super cheap to make. You can make them as simple or fancy as you want. I've used them during hard times and a little goes a long way. I've accidently filled up a whole skillet before and ate on it for like two days, breakfast, lunch and dinner. It's a great thing to know how to do. That's the funny thing about survival skills. Even if you're not in a survival situation, just knowing a few things can make everyday life more comfortable or less expensive. Y'all, try making it with oatmeal instead of flour too. Try tossing some eggs or green beans and diced onion in there. It's good.

Thx for sharing Donny. I've never tried my Bannock with duck fat before! I've used the following basic recipe for years...Hard to believe but bread is one of the things I most look forward to when hiking. 1 cup flour (white or a mixture of white and whole wheat) 1 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt 1/4 cup dry milk powder add fat of choice when mixing to cook. Optional - Add berries or nuts you collect while hiking. Beauty Berry (Americana Calicarpa), mulberry, black berry ect. This recipe actually rises a small amount if left alone for 30min before cooking (Hard to do when you're hungry)

Little things like this might not seem all that great but when you're out there in the middle of it all this little meal would be such a nice needed little break. Make ya feel more homey or safe. As much as the food is a source of energy it's also a way to keep your brain sane. Little things like this are just a nice break from it the cold and stress.
