How To Make Ashed Tinder, Fatwood Sticks, And Char Cloth (3 Tutorials) 

I'm completely out of Ashed Tinder, low on Fatwood Sticks, and could always use some more Char Cloth. Sounds like a good time to show you how I make these excellent fire starters. Any tinder that you saturate with ashes will make that tinder into a great coal extender. It can be used the same way to catch sparks easily, stays lit/smoldering all by itself without aeration, and conversely can be aerated into an intense ember to ignite tinder. I never used fatwood sticks at all until about a year ago... don't know why. I happily keep them in stock all the time now. They're great about starting difficult wet tinders for fire. Who ever really has enough char cloth? Although I have a peanut can full, I could always use more. LOL! Really though, I already have denim and terry cloth so, in the interest of variety, I'll be adding some t-shirt char cloth to the mix. I've known for quite a while about Fatwood & Char-Choth, that it's great stuff for building a fire. However, this is the first time I've ever been introduced to Ash-Cloth!! So very impressive!! I've learned something brand new. Goes to show, a person isn't too old to come across different fire building techniques & bushcraft. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

VERY good instruction video !! You are fortunate to have such a great source of fat wood ! For once , I learned something new ( to Me ) . I never would have thought about the aluminum bottle ( w/ solar ignition on bottom ) or , ash cloth . I like that better than char cloth !

I too enjoyed David, thanks, that ash imbedded is a winner 👍 Also in the past during our late Archery hunts we’d use pitch stumps on our fire Burn most all night, just find an old stump that’s been a sit’n, yank it out , some come easier than others, and you got yourself some heat

Putting the slits in is genius!

I would like to add to the topic of char cloth if you have 100% cotton absolutely use that because its creates a premium product. But even 70% will work in a pinch. It will be more stiff and crumbly making it a bit harder to use, and will leave residue on your char tin but it will light from a fero rod.

Excellent video David! I started a fire yesterday using a magnifying glass and charcloth made 3 years ago. Lit like a champ!!! AND of course I learned how to make charcloth from you!!!🙂 I made a bow drill,spindle, fire board and hand block from your videos as well! No luck getting a fire but got smoke before I pooped out! I just found out they make fire starter replacements for the toothpick and tweezers of a Swiss Army Knife!

I use a Condor machete to baton/split wood.

Kind of a new be here what is the best wood to make the fat wood sticks, I heard you mention it was root wood. Cedar, pine, fir. I know my folks used cedar as kindling

Hey David, what if you melted a block of canning wax and stirred in a bunch of ashes, then dip all of your strips in and roll them up? Would that be cheating? That stuff would explode I bet. LOL

I tried making ash cloth out of toilet paper. It worked! Burned a little fast though.
