Savory Bacon and Maple Scones

These savoury scones are a delightful twist on a classic treat. With the perfect balance of sweet and salty flavors, thanks to the combination of dates and maple syrup with crispy bacon, these scones are sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
Recipe:
Ingredients:
550g self-raising flour
10g salt
130g cold lard or butter
160g chopped dates
100g maple syrup
270g milk
200g chopped cooked bacon
Instructions:
1.Preheat oven to 200°C fan forced (220°C normal bake).
2.In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
3.Cut the lard or butter into small pieces and rub it into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.
4.Stir in maple syrup, bacon, dates, and milk. Mix until a dough forms.
5.Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and roll it out to a thickness of 25mm.
6.Use a 5cm biscuit cutter to cut out scones.
7.Place scones close together on a baking tray.
8.Bake for approximately 12 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
Notes:
For a richer flavor, use cold butter or lard.
To make the scones even flakier, chill the dough for 30 minutes before cutting.
Experiment with different fillings and flavor combinations. Try adding cheese, herbs, or different types of dried fruit.
To make the scones ahead of time, freeze the unbaked scones on a baking sheet. Once frozen, transfer them to an airtight container and store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Bake from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the baking time.
Serve with butter, cream cheese, or your favorite spread.
