How to Make Basic Lock Picks

I show how to make a lockpick from a hacksaw blade. It is pretty easy to make the lock picks but does require a Dremel tool or a bench grinder. Using a bench grinder will save a lot of time but I used a Dremel tool because it is what more people are likely to have. Keep a bucket of water nearby and dip the blade into it every so often so it doesn't become too hot while grinding. This is so the metal keeps its temper and doesn't become weak and brittle. You can find different templates of lockpicks online, print them to scale and glue them to the hacksaw blade. You can also trace any boughten picks to make duplicates.

Lockpicking is the craft of unlocking a lock by analyzing and manipulating the components of the lock device without the original key. In addition, ideal lock picking should not damage the lock itself, allowing it to be rekeyed for later use, which is especially important with antique locks that would be impossible to replace if destructive entry methods were used. Although lock picking can be associated with criminal intent, it is an essential skill for the legal profession of locksmithing and is often pursued by law-abiding citizens as a useful skill to learn or simply a hobby. The move towards combination locks for high-security items such as safes was intended to remove the weakest part of the lock: its keyhole. en.wikipedia.or...
Locksport is is the sport or recreation of defeating locking systems. Its enthusiasts learn a variety of skills including lock picking, lock bumping, and a variety of other skills traditionally known only to locksmiths and other security professionals.

Awesome job man. When I first started lock picking (approx 1 yr ago) I used hack saw blades and put alotta time & effort into fabricating them, but found that hacksaw blades are very brittle and break/snap easily. I now use carbon steel and/or stainless steel. I get my stainless steel items in the dollar store (steak knives) and the carbon steel in Home Depot (drain snake); much more stronger & durable.

Jim Thiemann did you torch the picks you made out of hacksaw blades to break temper? I had the same problem with the brittleness and after torching it they were much stronger.

J T ... Yep. You can also order 304 stainless sheets from AliExpress for less than a dollar each. 10cm x 10cm. Most picks are around 12cm though. So cut through the diagonal and get 2 pieces that are 1cm wide, or wider, and yet still yield a 12cm pick.

Well hacksaw blades need to be tempered to make them softer and flexible or they'll always break

You can dispense with a lot of the grinding. Buy a cut off wheel tool made for a rotary tool. Dremel makes them. Buy the slimmest rotary cutting wheel. It works faster than thicker ones. This way you cut along the line you have drawn, instead of grinding all the waste blade. After you cut the desired profile, you can fine tune the shape and make a smooth finish, all with a grinder. For a final touch sand the tool. Great video! Thanks.

Good idea. Don’t you have to constantly quench the work to prevent the temper from being lost though? Other channels make this a big point, but I really don’t know. Thanks.
@autumn5592
@autumn5592 2 года назад
It depends on the steel. If it's a HSS blade, then you're not going to really have to worry about quenching because it has a really high tempering temp. You would have to get it almost red hot before it starts softening significantly. Then it will just air harden anyway, making itself almost as as when you started. For 'carbon steel' blades, you will want to want temperature, quench before any oxides form (colour changes), as it will be softening by the moment. But, hacksaw blades are hard, you may want to temper them even more to soften them. A spring temper should do fine afaik -- leaving them hard but tough. If you get it significantly hotter than ~blue oxide, then you would have to reharden, on something this size, not really possible.

So, this was done without using a torch to "break temper" or something like that? I don't own a blowtorch and can't find one to use, but in almost all the DIY hacksaw pick vids I've seen the use a blowtorch to soften the metal. I was thinking of heating it in my electric oven but it looks like you ground it down without a torch. No torch needed? Great video btw

Can you tell me what the approximate center distance is from one 'hump' to the next on the rake that you made in this video? In other words, when you let the tool sit still at the very end to cut out the valley, the distance from that valley's center, to the next valley? 1/2" ? 1/4" ? I can't seem to get my spacing correct. I found templates online, but it's not accurate unless you can 'print to scale'.

Mark Price if you have a cell phone download a picture off the internet of the picks you want to make. be sure that the picture includes a ruler laid out next to the picks. google has some of thoes pics. then using a tape or ruler zoom in/out of your picture until ruler on the screen matches the real world ruler. a piece of paper and a pen and trace it. it's not perfect, but it gets you damn close.
@mprice7676
@mprice7676 7 лет назад
Jonathan Cody Bevans Bevans , Thanks for the INFO! I tried that...Google also has some templates that you can print. When I printed those out, I had a scale to reference off of, but the problem was my non-steady hands. I never could get my Dremel tool to cut them good enough, not even good enough that I could sand them down to shape. It was ugly, so I broke down and bought a Mad-Bob's set....which I am still having issues learning with. I need a cutaway lock to practice with, so I SEE what is going on while learning.

I'm investing $200+ in making lock picks May 2014. My picks will be made of 1095 High Carbon Steel Feeler Picks from MetalsOnline. I will be making G10 & Wooden Handles with Grade 2 Titanium pins in the handles. I will be buying a 12pk. of Metal Cutting disks for my Dremel. I will be buying a wood cutting disk for my Dremel. It's going to be EPIC. I'm also going to do a thorough video series on how exactly to make lock picks. I've drew up some designs in InkScape of my own disign. They will be slim and very strong.

If you look at the colour of the steel after the first grinding you can see it has changed which means that you have compromised the strength and flexibility of the steel. When working with such metals it is best to keep them cool it saves a lot of work afterwards.
@erniew5805
@erniew5805 6 лет назад
also you can retemper the metal. that small of piece . just use a hand torch heat to non magnetic. then quench in oil don't use used motor oil. then normalize in a 400 degree oven for an hour. while your wife isn't watching.. that should make it tough but not brittle . stainless has different requirements

@BrianTheMagicGuy
@BrianTheMagicGuy 8 лет назад
+Sam Davis The ones made from paperclips is great for easy beginner locks but if you really want to learn to pick anything good you'll need better tools. A paperclip set won't work most of the time for better locks, and that 10$ set will break fast. So a 60$ investment will let you make countless sets and in the long run becomes far cheaper. But if you just want to learn the basics for household doors and simple locks like Masterlock, paperclips or bobby pins work fine. You can even cut a pick from a hard plastic bottle and open those lol.

Mark Price thanks! I've recently been playing around a bit more with making picks with the dremel and hacksaw blades. Doing this just as a hobby, I've tried to keep the cost down. The first picks I made took hours. I was spending a ton of time grinding, and going through grinding wheels like crazy. I have found that if you use a cutting wheel to cut majority of the excess, then grind I can complete a pick in about 10 minuets. also, buying individual dremel tools is damn expensive, some of the heads are 6$ +. your better off buying the kits at Walmart or Blane's farm and fleet for 12$ and getting 90 pieces. some of it you won't need, or have a use for, but you might for a later project. I've also found that the off brand not dremel heads which cost much less work just as good if not better than dremel. since you bought a set of picks, you could now trace them on to your metal and make a back up set! I've started making master keys and bump keys for padlocks. originally I just bought blanks from Walmart at 2.50 a key. I found that the dollar store, dollar tree where everything is 1$ sells padlocks. each padlock comes with 3 keys, much cheaper than buying blanks! 3 for a dollar, heck yeah! plus I get the lock to use for practice! anyhow, if you hear of any good tricks or great deals look me up buddy.

I worked as a locksmith for a couple years. I have a large manual pick set and pick guns. I barely need to use them now. All I use 98% of the time is just a couple of paper clips I keep in my wallet just in case. A few years ago my Dad forgot his keys to our family machine shop so he called me. I came up to the shop and he asked me where my picks were and I told him they were at home. When he saw me pull a couple of paper clips from my wallet he told me not to waste the time and he’d just wait for my Uncle to show up and I told him I’d have him if unlocked in less than a minute. And he had his doubts of course. So we made a bet. About fifteen seconds later I had picked the seven pin deadbolt and I’ll never never forget the look on his face when he realized that he had just lost a hundred dollars! Lol Of course I felt a little guilty for taking his money because from his standpoint he had no clue how easy it was. So I let him hold onto his money. He told me that he thought I was just joking until I told him I had been doing doing that for years unless it was an ignition or a circular key. I’m also an ASE CERTIFIED MASTER AUTOMOTIVE TECHNICIAN and ran a mobile mechanic and locksmith business out of a large van with all of his tools and equipment for years.
