In this tutorial we show you how to create both the bass instrument and pattern for a wide variety of genres. We are using FL Studio but most of the concepts are applicable in all DAWs. We'll be using Serum for most of the bass instruments and sounds from Splice for the 808s and drum loops.

@ 21:04 the Scale highlighting feature in FL studio - is that the same as using the scale plug in in ableton and changing the scale to Aeolian?

Not quite but they both help you if you aren't familiar with scales. Scale highlight changes the gradients of the piano roll to reflect a given scale. Ableton's scale device won't change how the piano roll looks but will correct the notes going into the instrument so you will hear the right notes.

9:20 For the bassline in this genre, is it in A Minor or C Major? He set it to A Minor, but he started at C. They are all the same notes, but how do you tell the tonal center?

Graut great question A minor is the relative minor scale to C major meaning they share the same notes. The reason I would interpret that bassline is in A minor is because it leads down to the A, often the destination of a passage will be the tonal center. If you simply play the notes C , B , E then A i would argue it feels more like A minor rather than C major because it leads to A and there is a fifth jump from E to the A (also known as a cadence).

It just gravitates toward A. The Tonal center does not need to be on the first measure. There is a slight tension in that C on the first measure that gravitates toward a resolution - A. Listen, and try to hear if it sounds stable at C. To me, in that sequence, it does not. When it hits A, it feels like a tonal centre - home. Also, it is much easier to hear it in the context of a full song, rather then this short segment. You just hear where the song is "at home".
