In the final installment of a three-part video series, I demonstrate building a Flying Goose Whirligig. This video covers cutting the hubs, drilling them, finishing the wings, and then assembling everything onto the body.

The Flying Goose Whirligig is a favorite, the workings are just like the well know Duck.

Thank you for the video (Taking the time to make sure it is dead centre is something I need to work on . )Thanks for the table saw tip I am terrified of the table saw But I want to learn how to run it Have a wonderful week

Thanks for comment. A table saw is certainly to be treated with care and respect for safety. Good luck with your "wing" construction.

I put two standard saw blades together with two thin metal washers between them and that worked perfect for the 3/16 inch dado cut..I can micro adjust them by tightening or loosening the retaining nut accordingly....the wings slid in not too tight and not too loose... perfect..I understand that putting two blades together like that is risky... But I check the retaining nut tightness every two or three cuts and it has stayed secure and the blades don't wobble.... I'm following your instructions and making about ten gigs for Christmas gifts.. Cardinals, Canadian goose, Blue J's and bald eagles..your videos are the best...thanks..but you still didn't answer my question about what glue and paint you use...

Good tip! Thanks for sharing. I have used that method in the past and other makers do too. Saw blades come in a variety of thickness sizes. I use Tightbond glue mostly. Then paint with acrylic paint, with an overcoat of Polyurethene clear to seal and protect the wood. I used to use epoxy for the wings but it has gone out of sight expensive lately.

I have got to say that I really appreciate your Videos! You are really helpful in showing and explaining in detail . I'm new to making them and have completed two so far. However, the wings don't function as they should. I see I need to remake the blocks but I don't have a drill press. That's just one of my many questions for you.

I'm so glad they are helpful. I enjoy making whirligigs. I will try to answer any questions you have. Best of luck !

good videos... but missed the part about sizing the brass bushings in the wing hub and the bottom of the body and how to install them. thanks.

Thanks for the comment. There are several ways to do the bearings ( bushings) for the wings and the pivot at the bottom. I have used Cherry Tree Toys 1/4" brass tube, it's my favorite but it's really too expensive. I buy 12" at a time and cut it to 3/4" inch for the wing bushings and 1-1/2 inch for the pivot bearings. cherrytreetoys.com/12-brass-tube/ ACE hardware and most hobby shops carry K&S brass tube that you can also cut with a hack saw or Zona saw. cherrytreetoys.com/12-brass-tube/

Since my center hole in the hubs is 1/4" I just tap the brass bushings into place with a plastic hammer. If the hole is a litlle over size I put a drop of super glue or epoxy on before putting them in. Thats's it. I've seen plenty of whirligigs with out any bushings but it doesn't take long for the hole to wear so big that the wing flys away! Some makers are using the "plastic spacer" bushings you can buy at hardware stores in the green sliding boxes. I've posted some more pictures on my web page near the bottom - gwheyduke.com/purchase-whirligig-parts/

@@gwheyduke Thank you sir, 2 more questions please... Do you find that glue alone holds the wings securely enough in the hub? or would you recommend tiny screws and nuts plus glue? And what type kind of paint holds up best outdoors for these?

@@davidperez-qc4go Sorry I didn't see this one earlier... If you are going to leave the whirligig out in the weather for an extended time it's best to secure the wings with a small nail. Usually added after gluing. Sometimes I drill a hole and glue a dowel half way through the hub so that it grabs the wing but doesn't go all the way through.

The best way to hit dead center on drilling the hole in the hub is to use a fence and a stop block on the drill press all you need is glue two pieces of wood at 90 degrees and you will have a fence you can clamp to the drill press table the to hit center clamp a stop block to the fence

Thanks for the tip. It's a great idea, I'm going to try that for my next set of wings for sure.

I love what you do. However, I have heard you call a bandsaw a table saw. And just now on this video you called a table saw a bandsaw?... LOL... anyway, I love your videos.

Yes, I'm not using any script or teleprompter, so just kind of making it up along the way. Glad you caught it, you know your way around the shop for sure! 👍. Thanks for the comments. 🙂

@@gwheyduke don't get me wrong, I love what you are doing. I have never made a whirligig but I'm about to start making them. I'm about to be 67 and I've been doing woodworking all my life. I'm also a blacksmith. I've been gardening most of my life and I want some whirligigs for the garden and yard. I've been researching whirligigs and I believe you are one of the best. I love that big drill press, never seen one like it. Have a great day, maybe we can talk sometime. I live in Newnan Georgia.
