How to make Business Cards and more Printing Tips for Digital Printers

How I print and finish business cards. Printing soft cover book covers. Printing and saddle stitching newsletters. Printing monochrome books on the Konica Minolta 1200Pro. Covers and newsletters were printed on a C3070. Business cards were printed on 120lb Uncoated cover paper. Trimmed on a Challenge 305 paper cutter. Imposition software used was PDF Snake, however just using the step and repeat function in Adobe Indesign would achieve the same.

Enjoy your videos. I have a very similar setup as yours. One thing I’ve found that works great for business cards… instead of cutting the crops to see if the front and back line up, I just turn the flashlight on my iPhone on and place it under the sheet. Easy to check multiple crop marks that way.

Nothing beats that feeling when you have 4/5 machines running. Also the slitting machines are rubbish when you have bleed on digital. I bought a polar 66 programmatic and despite the cost the return on time was worth it. I work on my own and have 2 x Xerox 1x Heidelberg platen and HP Latex along with about 30 other machines I keep buying stuff it’s addictive. Been printing 30 years. Love these videos.

Enjoying the vids Dan. I've been in print for nearly 18 years. Currently running two Xerox iGen 150's, C1000 and two Nuvera's. I'm starting to think the newer colour production machines, even the smaller models like your C3070 are making the iGen platform obsolete. The amount of operator intervention and down time is ridiculous. While I'm inside the machine cleaning, replacing parts, diagnosing issues these smaller newer machines are chugging along with slightly less output but with similar quality. You said you've had one service call on your 3070 since you've had it and that was for just a drum? Now that's the dream right there.
@justaprinter
@justaprinter 3 года назад
I have had multiple people pitch an Igen to me and Nexpress. No matter how I looked at everything I couldn't justify it. And I wanted a larger/faster press. After I ran the C8000 for a few years and had headaches, I decided that multiple small machines is a better fit for me that one large one. But that might change at a later date too, time will tell.

Interesting, I set up my cards the same way but in Indesign, I just have a template but as an added help, I have cutlines which are grouped so I just print one sheet and if its in position (check with a utility knife the same way you do) then I just click no colour for the lines and then run the cards without the trimlines. Having the top sheet with the trimlines just helps me from doing the wrong cut, if I'm not paying attention. Also I would have cut in a slightly different order - that is cut the two sides, then cut the long strips to 3 1/2" and then cut the 3 strips down 2 1/8ths down and then the final 2" cut. In this way you are just handling the long strips rather than piles of cut cards . (also I have to take the false clamp off for less than 3" and the cutter may leave marks so I often have a couple of waste sheets under the top sheet) Whether or not its worth getting a bc slitter I can't say, but I don't know if you have a programmable cutter, if you are doing a lot of cutting that repeats, that is a huge time savings, so you don't have to stop and move the cutter by hand to the next cut. I don't know if they're still around but MicroCut from California has an attachment which retrofits old cutters with their Microcut computer so you just punch in the next cut length (rather than moving it by hand) and you can enter a series of cuts, moves, back and forth and save it. You can have a number of programs for various things you repeat. It is handy for large runs. Basically they have a motor that attaches to the adjustment wheel. You can also adjust, add or remove a cut anytime when running a cutting program. And you can still keep the manual option.
@justaprinter
@justaprinter 3 года назад
Yes, I looked into the Micro cut. I think it's only $1000 or so. I need to decide if/when I just want to upgrade my cutter. Thanks for watching!

That PDF snake program is cool I'll have to try it out. We've been using the fiery imposition software. It was about $1000 or so but I think the integration is worth it in the long run. With hotfolders we can download impose and proof print our files in one step. Lately I've been trying to adjust shift on all my media's so I don't have to shift on the job. It's working pretty good. We I started and was having to cut all my BC's on my cutter I quickly bought a duplo slitter cutter creaser.

We have been using an 8up card slitter for years, running all our business cards 16 up on 11 x 17, chop in half on cutter then hand feed through slitter. Efficient but not flexible. Just this week I installed a Duplo 646 and I’m blown away. I really think as a 1 man shop you should consider one of these, it’ll take a lot of the load off your cutter (and the manual time) and it will just run attended while you’re binding books, etc. Got mine used for $24k. In your case the smaller 616 or 618 might be a better fit for your shop. Also perforates and creases. It’s a beast. Love your videos!

@justaprinter

Some variance is to be expected (I also run a print shop, all digital here too) and that's why we have bleed. Great work Dan, though for 12x18", I also check all four corners for front-to-back in case the printer's causing some skew while doing duplex printing. Quite often, I get one corner great and the other may be a little out of whack...

I am not a fan of working at a small print company where the site manager dictates or micro-manages your work duties and there are times the manager or a co-worker scolds at you for not doing the right thing Iike cutting various printed materials like trimming down a 10-up Book mark or 20-up business card is freaking challenging on a power-driven guillotine but trimming SRA3 paper into A3, A4, A5, or A6 is very easy!
