Please Note - Epoxy gel coat and Vinylester/Polyester Uni mould don't technically work together, however if the gel coat is left to cure over night before layup this has worked fine for me.
@@CarbonWorkshops Much thanks for your reply! Really appreciate! It's a good new idea for me to try this. If you can please write how much time you cured the epoxy gel before lamination? Cured time meters for proper adhesion? My name is Alex and we called "Carboninovations team" from Ukraine 🙌
👍 Excellent work..... I will be attempting the process of making my Ebike Controller compartment and Battery box . The vision in my head is clearer now after your guidance. Thanks Bruver 🤠
Very good, how are you managing to navigate around carbon print through from the first few parts. We’re using high temp VE gel coat with tooling VE resin to wet the fabric thanks !
Perfect hob my friend, wana ask something pls.there is a litle hole between 2 part mold commection line, when you lay up product gelcoat do you put something that hole l.mean close?
Thank you! Yes there is a very thin join which will show in the finished part. But easily sanded out and clear coated over. I lay up as normal over the join. 👍
@@CarbonWorkshops thankyou so much lm a fiberglass boat builder also, was wondering if l make 2 part boat mold how ot could be,thanks for answer have nice work.
What material is the part of the beginning of the video with which the mold is made? It looks like a kind of cardboard but I can't find where to buy it, thanks
Good morning, beautiful video! I wanted to ask you, how many layers of 450 fiber have you made? And what resin is the white one used between the gelcoat and the glass fiber at 3:11? Thank you very much!!
Hi, I use 3 x 450g Chop strand. And the white resin is glass bubbles (from Easy Composites) mixed with Coupling coat. It just thickens the Coupling coat into a paste.
What are you using to cut out your carbon fiber parts I'm throwing loads in the bin the disk is catching and throwing it into the part you on air power my electric Dremel is not powerful enough I'm on Dremel disks as well thanks 🙏
Could this mold work for parts made with your hand lay or wet lay technique for those who don't have access to an autoclave? Thank you for sharing these videos and processes with us!
spreading a layer of epoxy resin and laying the carbon fabric when the resin starts to be tacky could help the fabric to dry, or use a spray adhesive (but this could cause you to finish defects) the biggest problem remains the formation of pinholes on the surface, without a good use of an autoclave they are inevitable
@@CarbonWorkshops Excellent! Thanks a lot! I also wanted to ask a couple more questions, if I may. - Did you use one coat of gelcoat? - Is the Uni mold system suitable for prepregs with a curing temperature of 130 degrees or did you use some other temperature? - How many coats of varnish? Thanks a lot! Very cool result!
@@CarbonWorkshops which do you prefer of your methods? the polyester gelcoat with alloy powder and uni mould resins or epoxy gelcoat and uni mould resins? ive got a few moulds to make and it all comes down to costs. i'll be using prepreg carbon once moulds are made
@@CarbonWorkshops just made some large moulds using your method of alloy powder in the gelcoat but I used tooling gelcoat instead and then used coupling coat resin and tooling resin from easy composites. Not popped the moulds off the plugs yet as still got couple more moulds to make. Have to say though I don't like the tooling resin. It's really thick and found it didn't soak in to the mat very well. The coupling coat looks to me to be the same as atlac 580 vinylester resin. Will see in next few days how the moulds have turned out
@@CarbonWorkshops have you ever added the alloy powder in to resin? ive tried it on a mould today as i ran out of tolling resin and had to use atlac 580 vinylester and thought id add the powder and see how it comes out. the resin soaked in to the mat as normal so im hoping it helps raise the service temp of the mould as well as uing the powder in the gelcoat.
Did you apply the epoxy surface coat and let it completely dry to hard and not finger tacky? After dry do you need to sand or scuff the epoxy to get the vinylester coupling coat to stick to the epoxy or just apply right over the shiny dry epoxy surface?
@@CarbonWorkshops really? This is a first for me.. i was taught to never put poly over epoxy but ok to put epoxy over poly... i need to try it. I do alot of boat work glass and its always a balancing act...
Is like to see how you seal and prep the parting line in that mold. I have been using body filler to seal mine, and I may try a 2 part silicone next as I’m not thrilled with the body filler results in terms of actual sealing the mold.
