You should have kept the beans the same. That would have been a proper experiment to compare methods

This is a little bit more like an advert. showing you a few different styles of pots you can cold brew in. Grind, coffee type, coffee to water ratios are all over the place. The only constants here were, they were brewed at the same room temperature for roughly the same amount of time (maybe within a few minutes).

For DIY, you don't need the paper filter. After sieving for the first time, let the cold brew solution stay still for 1 - 2 hours (don't stir), and then slowly pour to another container. You will have the fine coffee particles sunk at the bottom and just discard it.

Great video. I like the way you showed different price ranges. My Great Aunt & Uncle used the Tody brand for years before cold brew was a thing. The concentrate that it makes is less acidic and easier on your stomach. They would add hot water to it for a hot cup of coffee in the morning. 😉

Good video! 30 years ago, my mom had the Toddy Brew system and that's how I learned to love cold brew! Currently, I'll put some coarse ground coffee in a mason jar, add water and let sit overnight. Note: I'll stir a couple times during the day. Next day just be careful when pouring and you really don't even need a filter if you have a steady hand. Done.

Excellent video! Thank you for posting. I've been cold-brewing for about ten years, using the Toddy system. The thing I love about brewing coffee this way (cold brewing using any device) is that it makes even the cheapest coffee grounds fairly drinkable. Anyway, I'd like to get other's opinions on something: It appears to me that we have some confusion about the name "cold brew". I've always stated that "cold brew" refers to the METHOD, as in "brewing coffee without having to use heat". I know that's true. But it appears that many people think I'm talking about drinking cold coffee, or iced coffee. That is NOT true. I then have to say something about cold brew doesn't mean cold coffee. I can drink it hot or cold, and usually, for me, it's hot. "Cold brew" is referring to the way I've brewed the coffee. Even media, coffee companies, and grocery stores seem to think that drinking "cold brew" means drinking cold coffee. Are they really interchangable and I'm just being picky? What's your opinion...anyone?
@Artkruz812b
@Artkruz812b Год назад
Jeez, @jaywebb4992, if your name wasn't there, your comments could very easily pass as my comments (on any given topic)! I cannot clarify any of the ambiguities at all. In fact, I think the product should be called Cold-Steeped Coffee. Over the years, my over-thinking and always analytical manner of thought has mostly served me well, sometimes not. I enter my golden years satisfied in knowing my true nature is "I abhor inaccuracy." The opposite is the true nature of corporations in the media, retail coffee, and retail grocery industries. The discrepancies you question point to yet another (of many) examples where the corporate greed motive - accompanied by a fundamental dishonesty in packaging and marketing - has created Retail's ideal sales model: "Baffle and confuse them, then we can sell them anything." I do not consider it picky of you to try to look through this fog for the truth. Some might call it picky, but picky implies an underlying uselessness of the information involved. Instead, I consider you are interested in factual and accurate information on the matter. Maybe you are (or are not) as cynical as I am, who knows? If I am picky, it has overs the years turned into an old man's grumpiness. I would rather not think as much; my fallback position is a reliance on my own maybe-misguided belief in the rarity of people like us who innately yearn for truth and facts. The rarity is suggested here because this rambling is the first reply to your comments in almost a year.

Using a cafetiere (french press) is a good alternative. For my personal taste I brew 60g of coffee to 500ml gives a nice strong tasting brew with plenty of flavour. Recently a Brazilian bean from Mogiana Region by Cuppers Choice. Add coffee and water to the cafetiere, give a stir and leave in the fridge for 12-14 hours. Press down the plunger and then I filter again through a V60 to make sure the brew is especially smooth.

I think water plays the most important part as the end product will contains more than 90% water. water quality may vary in every place, but to be sure try to find soft-type water source to be use as brewing water. as I do big batches of cold brew coffee every week, I found that soft water type enhanced the stability of the product longer than if you brewing using hard water.

My grandparents had what was probably a Toddy Brewer in the 60's. They would mix an ounce or so of the concentrate with their cup of hot water. Seems like they just used a tin of MJB. The commercial Cold Brew, I like the best so far is Grady's. A blend of coffee, chicory, and spices. Very nice with ice and half and half.

lol - I cold brew my coffee from fresh ground beans in a one gallon Rubbermaid pitcher for 12-18 hours. I then pour it through a strainer into a paper cone filter in my powered off drip coffee maker. The filtered brew is then poured into two half gallon glass beer growlers for storage in the refrigerator.
@corwinblack4072
@corwinblack4072 3 года назад
My method is using Flair espresso, putting inside my usual 18g, but more finely ground than for normal espresso, pour some cold/room temp water (depending on mood and if its going to be on rocks or not), press a bit, till first drop is visible on portafilter, wait 2-3 mins, and slowly extract. Drink as you like. Doable same way with ROK or Cafelat Robot. Tho I suggest having naked portafilter, otherwise you might waste a bit of coffee. :) Can be also improved/changed by using cut-to-size aeropress paper filter into portafilter (and perhaps one on top of coffee cake to increase/distribute pressure). It works by simple substitution of time for pressure. As for type of coffee, while acidic coffee types are kinda fun, chocolate tasting ones with cold milk are also rather delicious. Reminds me that I wanted to taste some gourmet robusta for this, might be fun. Anyway, thanks for video!

I think people that think you cant make good cold brew are just people that don't like change. I have been making cold brew for awhile now and i have to say that the coffee you can get is amazing! It's also really easy to make. I just use a cloth filter and a jar, i let it brew for 12 hours. Sometimes i even heat it up for a hot coffee. I personally like to use cold brew with bad coffee or just coffee i don't like, as i find you can get a really good coffee out of something not very good or something very different if you didn't like a certain coffee brewed conventionally.(plus i just generally like hot coffee and am too lazy to heat cold brew) Also i generally find cold brew is very forgiving, if the coffee doesn't look dark enough just let it brew longer, if its too strong just add water. leaving it brew for longer doesn't really have any negative impact on the coffee in my experience.(with in a couple days*) over all cold brew is too easy to not try.

I bought the asobu system and have used it for over 6 months now. I would say the container leaves a lot to be desired. It's not the true dual wall insulated containers I use. It sweats as I am depositing the coffee into it. Other than that gripe I would say the system works really well and I can consistently make cold brew for work and let it steep for atleast 16 hours easily. If you put the upper part into the fridge without the container at the bottom, do not hit the container or touch the button. The ball valve is sensitive and it can drip. It has happened to me many times where I find a nice puddle in the fridge but I don't lose much coffee. Overall I think it's an easy system to use at home that also looks good.

I appreciate being educated about one aspect of the "cold-brew issue" by both the video presenters and the commenters: I didn't know that the cold-brew method is a way to rescue aging ground or whole-bean coffee for consumption...I usually use such a product for making coffee for coffee enemas! (Read Max Gerson, an alternative healer from the mid twentieth century).

If like me you have an acid reflux problem with coffee, you can cure it by using low-acid beans and brewing it cold. (Exposure to heat during brewing raises coffee acidity.) I grind my coffee 3/4 rough and use 1 cup beans with 40 oz. water. After leaving covered and room temp overnight I filter the coffee using my Frieling French press, which uses stainless steel filters to let the flavor through more effectively than paper or plastic filters. If I want my coffee hot I pop it into the microwave for two minutes. Or, fill a glass with ice cubes and pour over the coffee. I make big batches of cold brew and keep it in the fridge because it does not get stale.

Thank u for your video. And whoever told you aceh gayo is best for cold brew, its true. I tried your diy cold brew twice noe. The first one was using aceh gayo and the second time was espresso mix, aceh gayo was proven to be super refreshing for cold brew, for me. But i did not use the wine gayo, its slightly different. Anyway thanks again for your useful n clear video

OXO makes a cold brew system similar to the Toddy method but so much easier to use. You flip a spring loaded switch the open the valve and the concentrate falls into an Erlenmeyer flask.

Thanks! I just saw it on Amazon and it looked really good. Unfortunately, there are not as many OXO products on the European market but I will check it out when I can.

Had one, can confirm. Very easy to use. But it’s massive. And that has been in general why I stopped doing cold brew - you just need too much coffee 😅

I've been enjoying the Brazilian Serra Negra coffee that I roast cold brewed. It comes out really nice.

To enjoy most of these delicious brews, what coffee machine should I buy? And either fully automatic is a better choice or not?

You forgot the wire mesh filter that goes in a wide mouth mason jar. That's what I use, only $10 on Amazon! I make a half gallon of concentrate every two weeks or so.

When you say this, are you talking about a screen lid like you would use for sprouting? Or those mesh tubes that fit in a mason jar? I have been wondering if there was a screen lid to be able to keep the grounds submerged.

I was surprised at 10:25 when you put the insulated container in the fridge with the lid on. You realized later it's insulated and it won't get colder in the fridge than it already is that's the point of it being insulated.

I also drink cold brew warm? The first time I had Cold Brew was in Canada. They added hot water to the concentrate. I was very confused at first. But now, I use my concentrate both for a hot cup of coffee, and for a cold refreshing drink.

I don't think anyone that likes coffee would dislike cold brew. Facts are it's smoother and more flavorful. It's great black or with C/S. It's great hot or cold.

Personally I use Hario Filter-in Coffee Bottle. It is very similar to Mizudashi in terms of filtering and usage, but the shape is more like a bottle. I found out that some medium roasts from good quality coffee from the supermarket (I know, blasphemy) works really well for this method, but only if it comes in beans. I tried with fancier stuff as well, but in my opinion it is not worth the paying extra for slight difference in the taste. I keep single origins for other brewing methods including v60, syphon, Aeropress etc. I usually go with 1:10 ratio for IMHO the best taste. For my Hario bottle it means 75g of coffee with 750ml of water. To brew it I keep it in the fridge for at least 24h. Sometimes it can be done in 16h, but for my taste 24h or a bit more is a sweet spot.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I forgot to mention the bottle, as you said, it’s very similar.

I also have the HARIO bottle. I eventually found that 75g to 1L for 17 hours out of the fridge is perfect, but it's also worth discussing how much you consume. I drink 250ml serves, so my wife and I polish a litre in a day. Why do you keep singles for other brew methods? You can taste so much from a single when you cold brew it.
