Composting your kitchen waste is an easy way to cut down on the amount of garbage that your home produces, and is one way to start living more sustainably.
And the best part?
You end up with a fantastic soil amendment which provides everything your plants need to grow happy and healthy
Worm composting is using worms to recycle food scraps and other organic material into a valuable soil amendment called vermicompost, or worm compost. Worms eat food scraps, which become compost as they pass through the worm's body. Compost exits the worm through its' tail end. This compost can then be used to grow plants. To understand why vermicompost is good for plants, remember that the worms are eating nutrient-rich fruit and vegetable scraps, and turning them into nutrient-rich compost.
You should use red worms or red wigglers in the worm bin. The scientific name for the two commonly used red worms are Eisenia foetida and Lumbricus rubellus.

When my granddaughter was in fourth grade she and I raised worms in our garage for her science fair project. She had so much fun doing it and was very diligent making sure her worms were cared for every day! I could not believe how fast they went through the scraps!! That was 15 years ago and she is now grown and lives on her own.. She still talks about this project all the time! By the way, she took the grand prize in her science fair for her worm project!

Well managed (not overwatered) worm bins will NOT have that much tea. It is ideal for there to be very little to no tea, as all that moisture is bad for worms, and your vermicompost was very wet. It should be like potting soil, somewhat structural but loose. But, great video, well made

that is supposed to be a swappable layer bed. top layer would be the new bed with the fresh compost so the worms would travel to the top layer after finishing the first buttom layer. that way harvest would be easier and lest mortality for the worms

@subhamsoumyam8778 5 месяцев назад

@smartermindmatters
@smartermindmatters Месяц назад
In this video, the top bin wasn't in use. It should be swappable with the middle bin. When the ANC is working in the middle bin, you have to stack the top bin with kitchen wastes. As time goes by the kitchen wastes on the top bin would decompost. Meanwhile, after eating and converting the wastes in the middle bin, the ANC will look for food to eat and they will move to the top bin. This time, you can easily harvest the vermicasts in the middle bin and, thereafter put the bin to the top ready for stacking again for a new batch of kitchen wastes. The process is repeated in this way.

@@advocaterishitamall I would avoid using leachate at all if you can make proper compost tea. Leachate contains bacteria that are not safe for consumption (that have not been through the worm digestion) and goes off fairly fast (foul smell). From my understanding leachate can be used very diluted on trees and some plants, but never on leaf crops that you directly eat. I'm not sure as his setup is different from most worm bins I've seen but a worm bin shouldn't do too much leachate in general as the worm bedding should be moist but not "too wet" so it drips.

May I ask you how you added your second round of veg peels after harvest? Do we need to add cocopeat again and start?

why Potassium is important in plants: - Potassium regulates the opening and closing of stomata thus regulating the uptake of CO2 thus enhancing photosynthesis. - It triggers activation of important biochemical enzymes for the generation of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). ATP provides energy for other chemical and physiological processes such as excretion of waste materials in plants. - It plays a role in osmoregulation of water and other salts in plant tissues and cells. - Potassium also facilitates protein and starch synthesis in plants. - It activates enzymes responsible for specific functions.

I maintain worms on my terrace garden in 2 old plastic pots of 16 inch each. Amazon k cardboards aur kitchen scraps se I get 7 kg vermicompost every month. Its free compared to this exorbitantly priced product. Hope we get better worm bins in India at cheaper price, like the Hungry bin from New Zealand, which is hands down best design so far.

Where can I get a compost system like this? Compact and streamlined. Love it
@NanasWorms
@NanasWorms Год назад
Meghan, there are several commercial stacking worm farms out there that are compact like this. Some people make their own using totes with holes drilled in the bottom except for the bottom tote. I prefer just totes alone with no holes anywhere and no lids. I have two worm bins in my kitchen and two in my family room that run with no smells and lots of happy worms! ~ Sandra

The 2 ingredients obtained are liquid organic fertilizer, composted organic fertilizer, and I use this system, just like nature, very good.

Hi there! I have an important question. At the start of the season we bought bulk compost and stored it in lidded trash cans. Then forgot about it. Well now we want to use it in a new rose garden bed and it smells vile because there was no air holes 🙈 is this now not safe to use? Will it damage my new roses?
@urbangardeningofficial
@urbangardeningofficial 2 года назад
You can use it 🤝 use in less quantity first

Do you add extra water in the bins during the feeding time? Because I never get that much worm leachate (the nutrient water).
@urbangardeningofficial
@urbangardeningofficial 2 года назад
No ...may be from the cocopeat (I used 6-7 litres of water for the cocopeat brick in the starting)
