In this video I show you how to make cross references in word. Cross referencing is when you refer in the text to another place in the text. This can be a figure, a table, a section, an equation, etc. This needs to be do in academic writing to link different parts of the document together. However often while writing the number of the figure/table/section/equation can change and it can be time consuming to go back and renumber all the sections so word allows you to create dynamic cross references that will update if the number changes. The cross references in word will also act as hyperlinks that will transport you to that point in the document.
Note that this will only work if you are using the official microsoft word headings/figures/tables etc.

ATTENTION: Almost missed the deadline of my thesis submission because with those cross-references it is impossible to convert correctly the word file in PDF, there are spaces that appear near each reference

Thanks, it's very clear. How do you customise the case of cross references? I have a bookmark (e.g): "What was the purpose of ABCD?". I'd like the cross reference to say "what was the purpose of ABCD?" -- noted the cases of words. I can tweek field codes to lower case but then it also changes the acronym.

Is there a faster way to cross reference? I work on scientific documents where you have to reference all the time. I hate going to have to visit the ribbon, clicking, then selecting whether it's a table or figure etc

What is the process of populating the "Reference Types". In other words, how do i get titles to appear as a Figure or Table in the sub categories in the reference type drop down menu while inserting a cross reference.

the bibliography redrencing always used to work for me on a document ive been writing for weeks now and some reason I now end up with this error now "Invalid source specified." is there anything for me to do at this point? do I have to start my refrencing all over again?

Was doing my bachelrthieses, i fuckd up me referenc folder as had done it manualy and then i could corss refernce the books from tex to the Referecn folder did them then with the bookmar thing... jesus u saved my life

So if you have 100 cross references and the numbers all change, do you have to update each one, one at a time? Would be nice if it updated them automatically, like in Endnote...

You should be able to update everything in the document at once by going into print preview and then going out of print preview. You can also try Ctrl + A to select everything in the document and then the keyboard shortcut F9 to update all the fields.

NAH ! you can insert your references by number, and only use cross-references (numbered items), without being forced to insert every reference as a bookmark! - in the cross reference, there is a tab, which you can select between difference categories; such as: Headings, numbered items, tables, figures, customized heading and such...

All I want is to update a cross reference to a page. For example: On page 100, I say: See page 230 for more information on JFK. If I add info. and create new pages, the info moves. Now the info on JFK is on page 235. How do I get my page number to update from 230 to 235? Any advice appreciated.
