Some extras if interested, from a fellow goldsmith : If you use less solder, you wouldn't even need to file it away afterwards, saving both money, time and strain. Also if you do have excess solder, file it away before shaping, it will alter the shape of the ring. It might feel safer to use more solder, but you used perhaps 3x more than this ring needed! Also when you use your finger to push that bezel down on the file, be aware that you will push more on one side than the other, so it is good to change way a couple of times so that it remains straight, or push with two fingers from above so it files straight. Punch hole a little closer to your edge, ofc not too close, but you could easily have gotten away with a mm distance here. When soldering a bezel to a plate, it will require less heat, time and strain on the solder if you cut it into smaller pieces and lay it evenly around the wall instead of one big piece; the heat can make it overheat and create bubbles when so large. It looks more elegant and feels more stable with a ring where the bezel is soldered between the band, not on top. Very good to use as much hard solder as possible! Thank you for sharing, and the inspiration!

I laughed so hard when you showed us where the lost gem was! 🤣 I'd like to say thank you for sharing your stories and teaching us the art of silversmithing jewerly. It has always been a dream of mine, but I never knew where to start. You have inspired me so much to finally give it a try. I have a lot to learn, but because of you, it has brought back that strong desire without hopelessness to give it a go. You and your work are absolutely beautiful! Thank you! ❤❤❤

Ditto, Ditto, and Ditto! I'm so inspired to finally invest in the tools/materials and commit! I do have some beautiful faceted & unfaceted gemstone Cabochons that are too small for beaded bezels, some of the tools, so I don't need to invest much more money to make it happen... But she makes it all look so easy..when I know that it will take years of practise to be half as good ❤️ I wish you well in your own endeavours 😊

You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it, Thank you so much for watching :) And I completely agree - you don't need ALL of the tools, especially when getting started. While there are certain tools that are necessary and some investment is inevitable with metalsmithing, there's no need to get everything all at once :)

Love these, especially the open bezel. Love the colours in opals. I must work out my ring size and save up for one of these beautiful simple rings. I watch for moonstone and Alexandrite too as those are my birthstones! I watch for a very simple bezel with moonstone and Alexandrite, but would be good with Opal as well - hubby doesn’t like Pearl s he grew up with the old adage that pearls are bad luck. These are gorgeous and I love watching the process. I’d love to try this, Hubby had to get his wedding ring cut off and didn’t want a replacement, one day I’d love to make something from the metal of his ring. 😊😊😊
@TheArtOfMetalsmithing

That's so sweet, thank you so much, love! :) I appreciate it a lot. Oh yeah, I heard that about the pearls, that some believe they're bad luck. Well, considering they come from a living organism, one can argue that we're not suppose to harvest them. I can see the point here. Moonstone and alexandrite are gorgeous! I'm on the lookout for some lovely and flashy moonstones to make open rings like these opal ones. Hopefully I'll be able to buy some soon :) And yes, I['m sure one day you'll be able to make your own ring bands! It really isn't that difficult and I;m sure you'd enjoy it a lot. Even if you don't plan on buying your own tools, you can always check if there are any workshops run by jeweller's or makers in your area, or "ring in a day" workshops, these are great :)

I remember thinking a few days ago I should start making my own rings, but after watching a few video’s and this one I’ll just stick to buying them instead. This is a science, it’s a work of art, and a gift to be able to learn all of this and make a business out of it, something I wasn’t even considering doing. I respect this art and will never feel the slightest regret again when spending a lot of money on a ring. I’m getting into gemstone rings made with quality because as awesome as SHEIN and Temu jewelry are they don’t last but a few wears and I got so sick of my rings just snapping out in public, let’s just say, adjustable zinc alloy rings with ADHD are not a great combination apparently. But when I went to a Celtic festival with a friend and bought some sterling silver rings I swore I’d never go back to cheap jewelry ever again. It may cost more, but it lasts longer.

Love these dainty rings!! I started this hobby last January and I NEVER get tired of making them!! This is where standard sized bezel cups and standard sized cabachons REALLY save time, though!! How are you able to use hard solder paste when joining the bezel to the rings, without the joins you just did coming undone? Does paste have a slightly lower melting temp than hard wire solder?

Great tutorial! Thank you so much. I have a question I am hoping you can answer. Can you share a LINK for the Deco disc you used and the tool that you used to smooth the bezel after you used the burnisher? I think you called it an EVE attachment honey and grey ones. I would love to order those tools so I can make these rings. Thank you for being so helpful. :)

Love the tip about using a wire step to bring the opal higher to fit around the bezel strip! Would you solder this wire step to the bezel strip? Would love to see a tutorial on how to do this ☺️

Hi Rachel! Your comment made me realize that I missed one clip and haven't added it to the video... The one where I was showing how I made that step! Oh dear 😅 That's a great suggestion! And it's connected to the subject of setting thin gemstones, so I will definitely make a video about it in the near future :)

Hi Basia! Really good work as always! Just an idea for a future video, it would be great to make a tutorial about dealing with firestain (prevention and removal). That's a nightmare, specially for those who use hand torch...

That's a great suggestion! Thank you ❤ I thought I did a video about it, but turns out I made a post on Patreon, but never made a video. So I've added it to the list of ideas and will do my best to make that video in the future too :)

Basia thank you so much for making this beginner, friendly video 🙏🏼 I have come back to it time and time again. I just have one question: how do you get the open ring bands angles just right so they align with the bezel for soldering. I am trying to make this ring, but I cannot seem to get my angles to align 😕. Do you have any tips or tricks for doing this? Many Thanks, Andrea

Are you able to do an in-depth video on the open-back bezel ring? For some reason, I'm unable to solder it correctly.
