I made my first silver ring today after binging your videos in lockdown ☺️ thank you for making jewellery making accessible and providing so many helpful videos! It’s something I have always wanted to do
You have just given me a lot more confidence to try this myself. Your very relaxing manner in this video conveys a certain 'you can do this' vibe, it helps starting out jewellers like me to no end.
This is such a helpful video for trying to teach yourself the ways around silver smithing! I would love some advice about the intricate designs you add around the bezel cause I can’t seem to find many videos that explain how to do that kind of thing. Thanks so much!!
hiya flower good one again, I started of with one of those little torches I was forever filling them with gas costing a fortune, I saved my pennies up for quite some time then I invested in the eze torch or orca as its called uses propane, 25ltr bottle I think it was about £23 but lasts for ages, you do not need any oxygen with it as you mix it on the torch think its ambient air or something , when I was using one of those small torches I think I got about 3/4 bezels done then ran out of gas half way through another made me sick, I think the torch was just over a $100 when I got mine but I highly recommend it, for someone just starting out its cheaper than the little torch set up or if your on a tight budget, those small tins of propane gas 3,4,5,£ per tin depending where you live fills the torch 3/4 times or you forgot to replace and run out half way through a project and the shop is shut arrgg, take care keep well keep safe very much look forward to your next vlog.
I AGREE! I've heard that the Orca/EZ torch is the most common/used torch around the world for just those great reasons you mentioned. Simple and great price. I have yet to use my Smith Little (given to me by a retiring jeweler), love my simple (Smith Silversmith - similar to Orca and far less expensive...) torch.
Hi! I have searched for hours on the internet for this answer so maybe u can help. I have a transparent stone set with a closed back and water and debri have started to leak underneath everytime it gets wet. I have pushed the bezel down as tight as I can but it doesnt seem to make a difference. Any tips?
I am so grateful that you share your knowledge so willingly and freely! I am a beginner and your videos have helped me so much. And I appreciate your positive and kind outlook! Your pieces are so beautiful and I aspire to be able to create that well one day. Many thanks!
I have always been curious about how to make pendants from cabochons. While there is a lot of work that goes into it, you made it look so easy. Your designs are beautiful and I really like how you explained everything so well. Great job making that pendant!
Fantastic! I’m a beginner and yours is the most helpful video I saw until now! It annihilated all my beginner’s fears! Thank you very much 🙏💖 and please keep teaching us the way you do! Clear & so informative! A gold mine 🔨 💎
".....or a chair..."! I LOVE her!!! Every new (and older) channel re-invents the wheel: ("How to make a bezel.........zzzzzzzz."). BUT (!!) I must say, this was the most entertaining, spot-on - LOVE the comments of insecurity - video of said wheel reinvention. It's a REAL experience! Basia kicks butt with her little torch (I love the big sigh she breathes when describing her torch limitations). I wish this was the first one I ever watched when I was learning that project first. Basia is a fantastic teacher, so approachable, encouraging, it's like she's got her cheerleading uniform on complete with pom-poms, rooting for the watchers/students' success! Her video is truly fun, and delightfully (and refreshingly) humble. Who doesn't love that in a teacher and guide?
I love this so much! Very helpful. Would you be able to do a video for how to make them embellishments at the bottom of the bezel? I'm not sure where to start with making things like those.
When I wrap my bezel wire around my cabochon it fits perfectly, nice and snug but, after I solder it on the stone no longer fits! Help please! What am I doing wrong? I don't want to waste anymore product.. 😞
Hiya Lady Stardust, wow, 169 comments on this video! Okay, some are you, okay and me, but person after person saying, thank you for a wonderful video. A wonderful help for starters on this journey. Well over a hundred people all learning to be jewellery makers, it says a lot for this profession that so many people can design and want to learn. These are just the learners fortunate enough to have found you who decided to comment. 55,454 people have watched this lesson, how many have learned from you? A lot of us I would say! Stay safe, Steve...
Hi, I first wanted to thank you for the video, I reckon it will help me a lot!! But I was wondering, would this method work for an epoxy resin pendant in which I want both sides to be visible??
Hi Basia, I love your videos thanks for making them! I’m just making some space to start making, but wanted to know what pickle you use and if it gives of much of a smell?
I love your designs…I too I’m still learning silversmithing and love to see all the creative designs then adapt my own design. Thank you again for sharing
thank you for this! could you possibly show where you got each necessary item you're using in the video, on a list? trying to get started with the least amount of supplies. thank you!
Excellent video! Tip on measuring height of bezel? I can’t always visualize well the “curve” of the stone. Also, how do you draw the backplate extra evenly or nicely to leave room for embellishments or twisted wire etc?
Thanks so much for making this video Basia - I’m soon to make a similarly large bezel ring. Would using a tripod and heating underneath (and of course a bit on top) be another way to help the solder flow and prevent any accidental melting of the bezel 🤪 Also, do I use hard solder for this? Your feedback will be really appreciated. Thank you 🥰
Thank you so much for this channel, i have been looking for this kind of channel to inspir me to start my own journy and to self learn metal working, you just did! Thank you!!!
Excellent tutorial. Love your suggestion of a chair. This tells me, as a beginner, that I can adapt your technique to my existing environment, investing in the necessary equipment as my budget allows! Looking forward to watching all of your videos. Thank you! 🇨🇦
Beautiful and simple. I like this because I don’t have a lot of patience to spend a lot of time on extra ordinary. Minimal is just as great. Thank you so much!! Your jewelry is beautiful 🌺
It's iron binding wire, it's great for soldering. If used to bind silver pieces together, it should be removed before pickling and never put in the pickle. Thank you so much for watching!
Hello, I found your page a few days ago and I'm soaking up everything I can from you as I'm a self taught jewelry maker myself, so appreciate your page very much. What I want to know is, is the Torch in your description the same one as the one you are using that you said isn't very strong??
thank you so much for watching love! 😍🙏 Yup, this is the very same one! I had to say that it isn't very strong, becasue, well, it isn't 😄 BUT, I have been using it successfully since the very beginning and I managed to make some lovely things with it (you can check out my Instagram page to see what I have in mind, my profile is @stardustmine.art). So I'd say that at the same time it is quite powerful for a torch like this. Definitely a great option if you're looking for small, portable hand torch.
Thanks for making these videos for us! I'm just starting out and they've been extremely helpful. Are you using hard solder for soldering your bezel and backplate together?
Can you give us a well explained solder melting tutorial PLEASE? :) I am getting so frustrated I can’t get anything to soldering correctly, it’s been a while. Thank you!!
Thank you so much. I absolutely love your videos. I haven’t officially started soldering, but I’m gathering info and supplies. What are your thoughts on the paste solder that comes in the syringe with flux in it? I feel confused about the type of solder to use! Any info would be so appreciated 🙏
Hi! Thanks so much for watching and your comment ❤️ he paste is great, but definitely for small elements. It wont replace the traditional solder. I tried experimenting, and know for sure that it's a waste and it just doesn't work as well. But it's amazing for little balls, flowers and any small elements! :)) So definitely get the regular solder, for example the wire one or sheet, that you can cut into small pieces and use with the flux. And you can also get a paste for these small elements :)
Love your videos! I had a question, I want to do my jewelry with a yellow metal that doesn't tarnish. Gold is so expensive, do you have any suggestions for alternatives?
I'm afraid all metals tarnish. Solid gold would be your best choice, it's the purest among yellow colour metals (as far as I'm concerned! If someone knows more, please correct me!). I totally understand you, gold is sooo expensive right now.. Silver too :(
Your videos are extremely helpful as a complete beginner! After watching your videos, I have a better idea of what tools to buy and the basics of making a ring and bezel. You are wonderful!!! Thank you thank you!
Thank you so much!! This step by step video was so helpful and really helped pinpoint what I need to do to better set my bezels!!!! 🙌🙌 thanks again for the great content!
Thanks so much for sharing this video! Very inspiring and educational. I was wondering if you would be willing to do a video on making a pendant with an open back? I have not been able to find a video on how to do that and those are my favorite types of pendants when the stone is exposed in the front as well as back. :)
oh no, that must've been painful... But without it you wouldn't learn and I know that now you'll know exactly how to improve and avoid melting it again in the future :) I'm glad you find my video helpful too, thank you! Wishing you all the best ❤
Please please please can you do a full polishing video! I’d love to see something like this as I’m learning jewellery smithing myself and always struggle polishing! Would be really informative if you could include how to polish different metals and also the process you use to get out really big scratches ❤️
Thank you for presenting things simply for the novice. l am not long into this journey and continue to learn from videos such as yours. Thank you for sharing.
I think it could work, but it will be very thin and could be a bit wonky. But I think it's ok for smaller cabochons ❤️ Depends on what you plan to do with it later, so keep in mind how sturdy you need it to be. For a ring, this might be a little too thin
Hi Pauline, thank you so much for watching! :) So when I buy sterling silver sheet from Cooksongold, they send it wrapped in that blue, protective plastic foil (you might've seen it in my other videos), and inside of the plastic bag. I keep it like this until I'm going to work with that metal sheet. As for the wires, I keep them in the plastic bags as well, I found it to be sufficient enough for me. Hope that helps! 😀❤
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing That helps a lot! I guess it is also good, to keep them out of the sun? I had the wires in open paper bags and didn't really think about it...
Oh, no! Definitely not, for the silver sheet I believe I've used 0.50mm sterling silver and for bezel wire I've used a fine silver, 5mm x 0.30mm wire :) So very thin and flexible
Love this so much!! If you could guesstimate, what would be the initial cost of getting into this art form for tools and supplies? I've always wanted to do it but I don't know what the investment is. Thanks!!
The only part that is super important when trying to replicate the process, is the thickness/gauge of the silver on both backplate AND bezel, as well as the hardness of the solder. Please advise?? Thank you!! Your videos are very helpful regardless, just need those key elements!! :)
So so detailed and helpful! I absolutely love your videos! Would you be able to share the size/gauge of the bezel strip? Is there one that can be used for most stones? Also, would you recommend the same gauge for gold filled metal sheet as you’re using here? Thanks in advance!
Hi Basia! Can you tell me what gauge bezel strip you used? I’ve been trying to wrap my bezel strip around a stone and it’s so difficult to! It’s 26 gauge.
This is a fine silver bezel strip, that;s why it's so soft. And mine is 0.3mm thick. Many jeweller's stores in the USA carry this type of wire, check out Rio Grande, they definitely have it! Good luck :)
