Great video. The tip about using a small plate to elevate the weights when adding additional plates is so obvious that I cannot believe I never thought of it. Seriously. Thank you for sharing that one. I still lift in commercial gyms, so this tip will be super useful. Makes me want to go deadlift right now. Thank you again. 🙏
I use my belt, a lot easier than a plate since its usually to hand, just flop ur belt on top of the weights and roll it around to get that inch up. Only do it if ur not overly fussed about ur belt tho. Will squash it but won't cause any serious damage
I wish personalities like you would teach courses on demeanor to young teens esp. males. You could show paying respect, showing virtue etc. "is cool" and sth to strive for, work on and look up to🙏you are a very valuable rolemodel
@@saltyboop7680 Not really. All these videos of people slamming weights in commercial gyms, where people complain with valid arguments, are of young people. Mostly people between 18 and 25 years old are slamming the weights and making a scene in non-powerlifting gyms and commercial ones. People complaining about the noise have valid arguments.
Liquid chalk is a lot more lowkey. My gym doesn't allow it but there's only 1 employee who would complain about it, I just make sure he doesn't see if it's his shift. Aside from that, my gym has everything except a deadlift jack. It's got deadlift platforms, good bars, clips, rubber weights so it doesn't make much noise. No complaints other than the chalk rule.
What I like about your channel and your personality is that you're strong af while also being humble, down to earth and aware of your roots as an ex-commercial gym goer. The bottom line is people should be comfortable lifting besides you, and you're demonstrating all the right qualities to have.
One more essential piece of equipment is a wire brush, preferably nylon, or if, necessary, brass (not steel), so you can clean the bar after. And also possibly hook grip tape for those who use the hook grip. I finally bring the 2.5 kg competition (IPF approved) collars with me. I the olden days, I used lock jaw ones. Oh, and baby powder if you use it.
My LA Fitness has Hexagon and its a gift and a curse when it comes to DL. Being that its difficult to rep with, but it really does train you to do dead stop lifting. Touch and go with hexagons will tweak tf out your form.
If you don't want to spring the money on a portable jack (I don't), dead wedges are good. Since they are partially curved, they more securely secure the plates when jacking than a 2.5 lb. plate does.
My commercial literally doesn't allow me to use regular plates on the deadlift platforms, only bumpers. I can only go up to 495lbs and I run out of room I end having to rush my deadlifts cause if I get caught they tell me to take them off
Are the bumpers this wide or is the barbell so short? Because all olympic bumpers I've ever used on a regular barbell allowed me to put 580 pounds with some space left, I reckon I'd run out of space at around 685,
my commercial gym is chill when it comes to deadlifts, since the employees also powerlift, so theyre chill w me using liquid chalk, but the only thing thats annoying is that the only dl jack somehow disappeared and now im back to the ol reliable 2.5kg plate for that😭
Bro thank you for the tip about the small plate everytime i go to hit 405 i struggle for dear life to get the 4th plate on 🤣last time i just put a 35 and a 10 on to replace to the 4th 45. Maybe with the saved energy i can finally break my pr of 425(I set my pr when I was 22... Im 32 now but i had a few years where i lost motivation and basically had to start from square 1)
I do Olympic Weightlifting in a 24 hour fitness. No one budges an eye. I’ve never had a manager come up to me when I drop the weight from shoulder height or even after I slam the weights down after a PR. I only know of one guy at my gym who said the manager came up to him. There are indents in the foam platforms from deadlifters but no one really complains.
The reason many (though not all) commercial gyms do not allow chalk is because of the mess it leaves, not necessarily because it gunks up the bar. Especially the mess on non-metal plates and the ground. Then the Karens complain. If people cleaned it up meticulously, it wouldn't be a problem.
my LA has oct plates, no platform, and no deadlift jack, I use hooks to deadlift and rarely 1rm to keep the weight controlled and to keep from hurting myself., I have no interest in competing but if I was, I would be upset about it
Russ! What kind of career oppourtunities yall got at corrupted strength? I'm a certified Personal Trainer looking to start off somewhere, I'm graduating with a degree in exercise science this fall and wanna move somewhere warm haha
Personal Trainer here: A word of advice, its gonna be a LOT diffrent in person, as in working in a gym, then you would imagine it to be. Either way, message Russ directly, as your comment here, is burried within 1000x others, unlikely Russ is gonna read it.
Russ way too polite. People drop the weight(on the platform) at my 24 hr fitness all the time. I feel like nobody will say anything as long as you aren't throwing it or dropping it directly on the floor.
Pro tip: row the bar to put on plates and rerack your plates when you are finished for extra man gainz while also not being a douchebag and leaving ur shit 🎉

I usually try and alternate squat and deadlift. So squat one day and deadlift next leg day. Or squat twice one week and deadlift twice next week. Whatever works for you!
