I use 70% Timberline mini pine bark nuggets 20% Sta-Green potting soil and 10% Coco peat moss. Osmocote 14-14-14 This is the best products and formula for Desert Roses to keep them from getting root rot and stay healthy.

Do you use a plastic pot or a terracotta clay pot? I do both, but it makes a difference what percentages of product mixtures to use?

Will you do follow ups on this plant with the seed pod? I have never seen a desert rose with a seed pod👍🏻

Loved it my desert rose is 8 yrs old the bulb is huge, over the past year it's developed dark core on its branches some hollow, I carefully cut the branches down until the dark is non-existent then put antifungal powder on its fresh cuts, you're growing medium seems like what it needs

I start out with Desert Rose Soil which you can purchase already made and then I usually add a couple things. It already has the sand, lime, etc. You can use it alone. But, I usually add the inorganic bonsai soil to it. Also the mini pine bark as the regular is just too big for me to use. The mini seems to work better for me. Perlite is already in the soil I get.

That mix contains a lot of decomposing organic material. It's close to what I use for Epiphyllum (an epiphytic "jungle" cactus) - and even in that scenario, I need to replant ever 2-3 years to prevent rot from the decomposing organic material. I would suggest a small (10%) amount of large fiber coco peat, instead. It lasts a long time before disintegrating. I don't think the natural desert conditions of adenium have a lot of organic material, while I also know that's not quite where they originated.
@Bryan-qx2iy
@Bryan-qx2iy 3 года назад
Is there another alternative for the usage of bark. With bark, it does attract termites, and I wonder if termite could harm the adenium plants? Thanks.
@alanoleary2278

Perlite is not naturally occurring, it's made in a factory by heating rocks.

QUESTION: You don't have to tie down tree? Won't it topple over in high winds? I have a 35 plus year old bonsai desert rose that belong to my late husband. After his death in 2009, i repotted this plant and it has done well since. I now want to replant it in a larger pot...so I do not need to wire it down? These are the last of his bonsai' plants that are left of the forty he had nutured. After his death, someone came and stole all the other bonsai. So I'm trying to keep these going for grandchildren to enjoy.
@growinggreenthumbs7497
@growinggreenthumbs7497 3 года назад
Hi you can certainly wire it. Just depends on the depth of your pot. It won’t hurt the plant but just keep in mind that the root can grow around the wire or the wire can make an inprint on the root or caudex. Sound like your late husband had quite a collection. I wish you and your family all the best.

I live in Montana. Have not had much success yet with these plants, since growing season so short, weather unpredictable, etc. I have a heated garden shed for winter that has good light, (windows on 3 sides and a skylight), so keeping them from freezing not a problem. There are NO adeniums for sale anywhere in my area, so have to order online. They arrive next week, so trying to prepare ahead of time the growing medium, since they are so prone to rotting. Wondering what State you live in, and if you also have to move them inside for winter. Most of the videos on RU-vid are done in India, Philippines, Florida, or other temperate climates. Growing conditions ideal for this plant. There, they grow like weeds! Here, it takes a magical touch to keep them happy. But I love a challenge!!
@growinggreenthumbs7497
@growinggreenthumbs7497 4 года назад
They certainly can survive through winter with supplemental lighting and warm enough temperatures. Cold for me in Dallas is low 30’s and sometimes below freezing. I do keep my plants indoors for the winter next to a south facing window. I plan to do a series of videos on winter care. It is extra work for sure, and my dad works extremely hard in the winter and wakes up in the middle of the night to keep 2 wood fire burning fireplaces going. Hope the best for you.
@growinggreenthumbs7497
@growinggreenthumbs7497 4 года назад
By the way, you may try a more well draining soil mix and supplement with more sow release fertilizer. Something like a perlite and chicken grit which is crushed granite, lava rocks and small percentage of compost. Should be well draining enough to limit root rot.

You can . I would do 5% or less. As it makes the mixture not drain as well. It’s definitely not necessary though if you are providing them good feeding with a slow release fertilizer.

You don’t have to trim but it would just encourage new growth. You can use almost any sand as long as it clean and not too fine to ensure proper drainage.

I have a baby just got it In TX which it's still 80-90 degrees outside When should I fertilize it? This is in Mid September the 15th to be exact. I put it in some well drain soil like Bonsai soil and Christmas Cactus Soil 1/2 perlite with rocks on bottom and top being a baby So I can add peat moss Like I use on my orchid? Maybe put it in top under the rocks??
@growinggreenthumbs7497
@growinggreenthumbs7497 11 месяцев назад
Not sure if you got it shipped in but I would make sure it’s acclimated to the weather first. Really no need to fertilize it until next year. If it is young, I would be sure to have it moist and not as well draining as you would an older plant.

Can I use coconut coir instead of peat moss?? Also, can I substitute the perlite with dry stall?? Thanks!!!
@growinggreenthumbs7497
@growinggreenthumbs7497 3 года назад
Yes coconut coir is a good alternative but I would have a mix of size chunks. Just be mindful that it does retain some water . I have not used dry stall but that could be an option. Seems very similar to perlite or could be just another name. Lol best of luck.

My friend can I use the same with baby desert rose?
@growinggreenthumbs7497
@growinggreenthumbs7497 3 года назад
I would not use any bark in the mix. The seedlings need to retain just a little more water for optimum growth. You don’t want the seedlings to dry out too quickly. Best of luck.

Hi Mary, I don’t sell the mixed soil. You can certainly buy various ones online however what I’ve shown was a mix you can do from home. Most of the materials you should be able to find at your local home and garden stores. You might have to do some searching now especially with the pandemic and short supplies. Hope that helps and thanks for your comment.
