How to Make DIY Drum Filter
This is a step by step video guide on how to make drum filter.
In this video I share to you how I would do a Drum Filter DIY for koi ponds.
I also do a lot of explaining on how the whole DIY Drum Filter for koi pond works.
Shared a little bit of my past wooden raised ponds so you'll how it started for me.

What a great video my guy!! I've been looking for a decent way to diy one for myself for a while now amd this by far looks the best I've seen. Thank you for very much for sharing. Could i maybe please suggest that you could take the air lines and have them direct feed to the bottom of the bucket with silicone instead of having them through the overflow pipe, I'm thinking some restrictions in flow the way it is. Also having the air lines in there like that you could theoretically run, say those small media balls and pretty much have it constantly "fluidised" just my two cents haha. Thanks again for posting.

@thekoipondexperience1259 3 года назад
It's not necessary to add UV and aeration inside the drum filter. But the presence of these add an incremental advantage into how efficient your filter set-up will be. Any little advantage really matters for some. But if you can't set these two at the moment it is perfectly fine. You can set them up later when you're ready.

@thekoipondexperience1259
@thekoipondexperience1259 3 года назад
The same design will work my friend however the size of these drums is small. If you can find larger drums and them make a set of at least 3 drums then I believe its suffcient. Assuming of course you are diligent in cleaning the mechanical filters as often as possible.
@shujaatali4728
@shujaatali4728 3 года назад
So a 3 drum design, meaning 2 drums for mechanical filtration and 1 for biological ? Also when you say cleaning, do you mean, using the drain valve to flush out the water or actually taking out the filter media and washing it individually? Any advice would be really helpful, thank you a lot for your help.
@thekoipondexperience1259
@thekoipondexperience1259 3 года назад
@@shujaatali4728 2 is to 1 drum is correct. And cleaning is just pulling out the nets from the mechanical filter and cleaning it thoroughly. The drum of the mechanical filter must be cleaned as well. Then not touching the 2 biological filters.

If I may suggest. You'd need the full size drum and at the least need 3 of those big drums. They come in blue color and are also plastic. Those 3 will be pure biological filters. For mechanical filtration you can use this white Chlorine container you see in this video. Small is better so can easily clean it periodically, like every weekend or everyday of that is possible for you. Use fish nets are mechical filtration media and have 2 sets ready. When you do cleaning, pull out the dirty nets the swap the clean set of nets back in and you're done.

@@thekoipondexperience1259 I was planning on using the big blue drums a total of 6. A) 2 mechanical filtration drums B) 1 UV Light Drum C) 3 Biological filtration drums.

@@abyankabir1910 I like your idea. Continue with your planning process but this right here is a good start. Then prepare the items and tools you need for the build. So that on the day your do the DIY your execution will go with minimal interruption. Take your time in making the build, no rush.

@@thekoipondexperience1259 thanks for your reply. I will be asking a lot of questions here. I hope you don’t get annoyed. Btw I was thinking if I can use plastic pot scrubbers and red bricks for biological filtration?

@@abyankabir1910 red bricks is something new to me, as long as they are inert they are ok. Some use pebbles. Plastic scrubs are ok as well, I've seen those used a lot. But are Pumice Stones and Lava Rocks unavailable in your area? Those are good options as well. Try to check a video I made for Pumice Stones and Lava Rocks.

May i know if this Drum Filter work for a 20,000 liter pond or i have to make larger 1

Hello Ken! This same white drum is too small for a 20,000 liter drum. You'd need the bigger blue drums and then set-up at least 4 of them in the filter system for that 20,000 liter pond.

@MrKenz6900 3 года назад
@@thekoipondexperience1259 I see! Thanks for the fast response. One last question, for 20,000L pond, is that means I need at least a 15000 - 20000L/H water pump for better water circulation?
@thekoipondexperience1259
@thekoipondexperience1259 3 года назад
@@MrKenz6900 That is correct. 20,000 liters per hour would be really nice for it. And then of course supplement that with a powerful air pump and your pond's water movement would really be sufficient to keep dissolved oxygen at close to ideal levels.

A check valve would have solved yoour back flow problem and would have enabled you to clean the design up
@thekoipondexperience1259
@thekoipondexperience1259 3 года назад
That is correct my friend. However I've done that before. In time this is what will happen to the check valve after debris from fish poops collect in its assembly. When that starts to happen even the check valve itself starts to fail and water will then start to flow back from the drum to the pond little by the little. I made a video on how to clean this drum my friend, no short cuts in my cleaning method just full on effort.
