Very impressive - I really like this filtration system - I use something similar but not as complex - I really need to add you idea of the air intake for the down pipes, very clever and effective - thank you for sharing this
I missed your video so thank you for posting a new one. Pond looks good and the greenhouse is nice and big. Well done! Looking forward to the next one.
This is fantastic. I'm trying to learn pond filtration for a customer of ours and stumbled upon this. 😍 I don't know if they'll go all out like this but i could!
I hate to hear about your losses but it's extremely common for temperature losses to be the biggest ones first!! It's because of Increased toxic gases in the fishes gills brought on by the lack of O2 exchanges obviously the bigger the fish the more exchange needs to happen and the size of the fish is always their downfall when this happens?!!! Never allow the pond to freeze completely over you can very easily get a heater and prevent a ice event from killing anymore fish , look into them you have a really cool diy filtration system going on I'm sure you can prevent iceing in the future....I think your pond in amazing nothing cooler than walking up seeing that many koi greeting you!! Amazing filtration and pond for sure!!
Thanks for the great positive feedback! I have a diy pond de-icer and it work great every winter but last winter the temperature went down to -16 degrees Fahrenheit for a few nights and my diy de-icer was not enough
I'm afraid this system is way above my visualization ability. Wish ya has a book of directions/plans. Now I think my Koi must have a better system than I currently have. We're new at this and learning daily. Thanks for your post. It very inspiring and of course your pond and fish are beautiful.
When it gets really cold and you think your de-icer might not keep up you can always drop in a small pump and point the outlet towards the surface to keep the water stirred up on the surface to keep from freezing over. Just a suggestion. I love your thinking on all of your filters. 👍
What city are you in ? Is the climate there warm all year ? I only ask because I see the plastic box filters and wonder if they last through the winters without cracking
Great pond man. I’m will start raising koi once my pond finish this fall. I live in China and weather can go down to around 1 to 5C. Since you mentioned your fishes died. Is this mean every winter you have to move all your koi into warm water ? Thanks
Koi can survive freezing temperatures as long you make sure the whole pond does not freeze on top, you need a pond de-icer to keep a small hole on the top water so oxygen exchange can occur and your koi will be fine
perhaps an emergency winter cover is needed & even an aquarium heater just to keep a small area clear of ice 🤔 the thing I learned many, many years ago is we keep water & if we are successful at that, the fish take care of themselves 😊 I absolutely love the fact that you have done this yourself ❤
Nexus maybe expensive but I have two nexus 300 models running on my pond since 2005 (17 years ago), lets see how this system holds up after the same amount of time.
All jokes aside, this video is all about DIYer spirit, it does not matter what filtration you use expensive or not as long as keep your kois happy and healthy, cause in the end is all about the kois
Hi. Great setup. Quick Question: around what temperature do you stop feeding the koi and when do you turn off the filters in winter? Thank you in advance.
I stop feeding my koi beginning of November and turn off my aquaponics filter before the first freeze and continue to run the skimmer filter all winter long unless we get a hard freeze then I will turn it off then turn on again once the hard freeze is over
Is your pump internal or external. I'm resetting my pond up again and want to install a external pump that conveys the pond water through a 2 1/2" pipe with a birds cage opening at the bottom for pond water intake. A systematic drawing would be fantastic. You've done a great job, and I can see your proud of your achievement, well done you.
@@chu0435 would your system have worked if you had set up external pumps in that case. I am trying to plan mine with external now as had internal for yrs, and have just had landscaping done so keeping everything next to pond in detaches garage I built in garden, which is 4inches below pond level and 4 foot from garage wall. Thanks for replying.
This is overkill for me but i made my version from a 200 l and 50 l barrels and the pond went from spinatch soup to almost crystal clear water in 2 weeks, I could see to the bottom in just 24 hours. Thanks!
@@chu0435 I bought treated lumbers to do the same but I’m somewhat hesitant, because It’s said treated lumbers contain arsenic which would gradually leach into water and could then be toxic to fish. If I’d use treated boards, there’d be 2 inches of the boards submerging in water. What’s your advice? Thanks!
Treated lumber will not kill your fish since only 2 inch of board is submerged, mine was about 4 inch submerged all around and the koi do just fine, you will be alright
@@chu0435 Great job! Must have taken days to build all that and weeks/months of planning!! Total cost for materials? What are your electric rates? Do you run the pumps 24 hours a day? At 13 cents per 1000watts per hour = 360watts X 24 hours = 8640 watts used (8.64 kwh X .13 Cents = $1.12 a day X 30 days = $33.69 a month).
Your math on the electric cost per month is dead on! 😃 Believe or not it cost around $1,000 to build the pond. The hardest part was digging the pond by hand that took around 2 weeks. If you check my first few videos which are on the aquaponics system so my filtration system follows the aquaponics set up which is easy for me to do, that took about 1 week.
@@chu0435 Dude maybe you can help a man if you was making a shower drip filter from a garbage tub and had zeolite, sponges/scouring pads, lava rock, Polyfilla and gravel . . . what order is best from top to bottom ?
Always the biggest media (most course) on top then as you go down it should be finest media on the bottom that way it should reduce the chance of your bakki shower getting clogged
how deep is your pond? if the surface freezes over, the ice will insulate the rest of the pond and the koi will be able to survive but only if the pond is 4 ft or deeper. looking at the video, it looks like it's only 2 ft deep?
