So here is my question. How big of a tank would this be good for and could you potentially do it on a larger scale ? I'm asking cause I'm starting up a koi biz with a local shop and was wondering if you had suggestions for a 1200 gallon tank setup on a durable diy level ?!!!

Interesting, to be helpful to all those who are interstellar in this build I am seeing two long term problems. 1. Using wood as a holder is a bad idea. He notes not to touch the water but stained/treated wood could potentially leak harmful to toxins into the aquarium just be coming in contact with moisture. 2. Those screws have a lot of pressure on the and over time might Crack the plastic. Would suggest additional screws with washers. Also you would want to silicone the inside and outside for additional protection. thanks for your post.
@ 3:27 adding clamp to back, instead of drilling the holes for the bolts and having the metal in the water, can you simply glue the board to the back with liquid nail? May need time to dry but beats having to drill more holes in it.
That would also be a great option, so would stainless steal, I just didn't have any laying around at the time and forgot to mention other options in the vid!
This is a great filter idea. I love DIY ideas for aquariums. However, the only issue, is that these days aquarium equipment on eBay is now going so cheap, its not worth making anything yourself.... Hang on filters on eBay, probably start at the same cost it is to buy all the material needed for this DIY filter. (and it looks ALOT nicer on a tank)
Some people prefer to make stuff even if it costs more than buying it. There is a certain level of accomplishment one feels when they create something and use it....I'm such a person but I find most of my stuff for free (thus being cost effective lol).

this is cool i think i'm going to try this but change it when the water going in gets pumped to the bottom of the plastic box and put a layer of sponge for it to filter through again. I'ld like to make a large enough on to somehow put my heater in there as well. this way i don't have to see it in the main tank. it would be an interesting project. thank you for the great ideas!
I would probably err on the side of caution and specify aquarium grade silicone and stainless steel screws and nuts. Great project; I might build it, because good HOB filters are not cheap.
ok I have another question. I made a prototype of this filter. My problem is when I switch off the power head, filter was starting to siphon the water out from the filter to tank. yes its not a problem because filter is carrying small amount of water. But when after it happened I had to prime the filter again. what is reason behind this?
yeah its a great working filter and i am going to build one but i wont use wood for the clamp even if it is paintet. i use some strong plastic covered wire for my filter instead.
In the video you're saying that the power head used is for about 200GPH, but the link that you provided shows a power head a little over 400GPH. So, which is the right one, the video or the link?
Built a exact replica of this filter , and the pump will not draw water into the filter. To prime it you suggest filling it up to the overflow level , but I still have air in the intake hose. How do I prime this filter that it draws water into the system?
Nice job on the filter . I bet money that keeps your fish happy . I think the foam is really important for extra bacteria growth . I made a video about my angel fish fry safe filter .
How can i tell if i'm getting enough flow through my filter? I built a canister hang on back filter out of pvc and played a little with a couple of power heads to power it one was rated at 190 GPH and the other 325 GPH. It's on a 40 Gal tank and it definitely doesn't seem like the 190 is getting enough flow through the tank but I also don't want to put too much flow and disturb the aquascape I'd like to do and stress the fish. I put a spray bar on with the 325 to slow the "flow" down a little so it's not a powerful column shooting in to the aquarium.
just heat the pvc with a plubers torch or heat gun, as it exspands you can fit it over the pump and it shrinks a bit as it cools, dont fuss with it after once its on your done, it might never seal correct again if you take it off, if you leave it alone it will outlast the pump every time.
How about the noise level of this DIY version? Does it only depend on the pump used, or may it get louder "in total"? I'm searching for a really calm filter, since the tank is in the same room as my bed...
i made the same thing but even with a 500gph pump it would work at first then by morning it would stop pumping or it would overflow the whole container
A good filter is definitely cheap enough to buy, but if you fancy a challenge.... Build one! This is a great one to start with. I've made 3 now, all just for shits and giggles. Fun stuff

Good idea but IF you make Smaller HOLES for the pipe IN the tank would I still have to cover it ? the purpose of cleaning is to suck the dirt and bring them to the the sump clean it and releasing it to the the tank is it??? just asking?? Thank you.
+Rukshantha Janaka No, its not. The purpose of the filter is to remove the chemical breakdown of waste. (IE ammonia) the dirt and debris can be left to break down naturally, or siphoned out during partial water changes. Google "nitrification cycle" to learn more about the purpose of biological filtration.
What would you estimate this filters max aquarium size to be? I have a young turtle in a 40-50 gallon tank, and I really need to do an upgrade to his filtration system. I'd like to have a filter that would be able to handle up to a 70 or 80gallon, since the bioload of turtles is much higher than fish. Plus I'll be adding feeder fish and/or snails at certain times.
How quiet is a setup like this? I was thinking of doing something like this with a planter box and filling it with pothos as a nitrate eater, but noise is a factor for me as it's in my bedroom. Reason for doing so is ability to use lower flow pump for longer contact time with plant's roots with tank water, much more room and less cost. A canister will be the main filtration. I noticed I can extend a pipe into the water for lack of surface agitation but was wondering about the other end where it enters the outlet from the box. Is there any gurgling or such?
You don't need to put bacteria suppliments into your aquarium to cycle it, if will just take a bit longer, and plus, even with bacteria suppliments, it will still take a few weeks to a month, while starting with no bacteria, it may take a month to 2 months.
I liked this a lot, but I don't usually have time for making my own things as much fun as it'd be. However, I am thinking that with all that space in the plastic container, I figure for the purpose of the video, you kept the media simple as where it looks like you could have gone to town and put a sponge at the bottom, then some charcoal, then some ammonia remover, then some of this n that, THEN the bio balls/rings. I'm running an Aqueon 10 in my 6 gallon tank but am considering either an Api superclean or a Fluval C3, both featuring bio-rings.. but I figure I don't really NEED a new filter but I just love how the Fluval C3 looks and it's a five stage. Call it overkill, but I want a crystal clear tank.. The Aqueon seems to be doing fine, but I like experimenting =-)
I am an Engineer and I can tell you that the design of the filter has an error. Error is- the intake is already has a filter mesh (whatever) thus it will not clean the waste materials as the filter mesh on the intake will stop it from getting in. Remedy- Use filter mesh of bigger gaps on the intake, and use narrow gap filter inside the filtration tank before it goes into the pump(or else the pump will get clogged). And also dont hang the filter on the aquarium, as it may crack the glass due to its weight and constant vibration. you can clamp the filter on haters :p By the way I respect your efforts. thanks for reading.
Arnab Mandal so all hob filters they make are going to crack my tank....no. This is very light. The bio media looks heavy but its not. So the glass can handle all that water pressure but not 8lbs that the hob is....no again! Engineer go home
Its more meant for nitrite and ammonia so no error. The mesh is mechanical filtration and trust me it works. Might be an engineer but you are no aquaryist!
Why do you use a sponge to block the holes on the intake pvc? Doesn't the sponge block the fish droppings and other dirty things from being cleaned from the water? I am a new aquarium user, so I don't understand this.
It keeps the fish from getting pulled up against the pipe from the suction and killed. Instead of using a sponge you could also route the pvc down one of those plastic tubes used for air bubblers.
+mathew williams Either you need a lower GPH flowrate pump, or you need a bigger output pipe back to the tank. Also, make sure you are NOT blocking the output pipe to the tank with media stacked too high.
awesome built. I wana ask a question. You have used a small power head to suck the water from the tank. instead of such powerhead i have a small pump. Cant I use it as the output of my HOB. ?? Lets say Im gona use my small pump to pump water out from my HOB. TO prime the filter i will close the intake tube and fill the filter and intake tube with water and put the intake tube into the water and turn on the pump . What do u think . ?? my plan will work ??
Completely awesome but I am smelling problems to find certain parts. My question is what exactly can use and recycle animal waste in aquarium? I am thinking plants but I think it's some other organisms.
Various kinds of bacteria (nitryfying bacteria for example, and other types) which live on the bio media inside of the filter and on the filter padding. Also on every possible surface inside of the aquarium, including plants.
Thanks for that I was at the nursery today and saw some elements that looked similar. It makes me think about it and I think its about the same or more costly to manually build. Its awesome to understand though.
Lhin Doh man, it might be very cheap to build. You really need a pump (which is fairly cheap), bio media (can be cheap as well), and the PVC pipes. I can say that instead of PVC pipes you could use a garden hose, and instead of a drill you could use a sharp knife. Pump- well, they sell some very cheap ones in China and other Asian countries. Ok I really shouldn't say that but I will (didn't want to advertise)- check ebay, there are tonnes of cheap stuff there. Be crative, good luck and take care :)
Valentin Rodriguez A friend of mine told me her water pump inside the tank overheated and when she came home from work, all her fish were dead and the water turned black. I'm sure it is probably rare, but still it can happen. She gave up on having a fish tank. And on a second thought, a water pump can still jam and overheat, even in an outside filter system.
ok. then for aquarium cycle..do i should put the Live bacteria product to start the bacteria colonize ? or the bacteria can grow itself without our intervene? i mean naturally
