Hi Marie. This looks so cool. Why didn't you use any co emulsifier like cetearyl alcohol?
@HumblebeeAndMe

I don't have a really strong reason-it keeps the ingredients list shorter, and isn't necessary for a stable product. You could definitely include one if you're looking for a more viscous conditioner :)

Hey Susan! If you are using CP shampoo you will still need to pH correct, but it is great after that! And yes, you can scale the recipe, but I always recommend making recipes at 100g first to see if you like them before making more :)

Excellent video. Can you make a video or two about using xanthan gum and lecithin as emulsifiers for hair products pretty please?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 5 лет назад
Probably not, because neither are particularly good emulsifiers. Xanthan gum isn't an emulsifier (I've read it has "emulsifying properties" but if you want to make a stable emulsion you need more than "properties"), and while lecithin technically can be used to create a water-in-oil cream it's really very finicky and the end product not something I'd ever want anywhere near my hair.

Hi. NewBEE here😂. Can you go through the silks? I’m a soaper and have tussah silk, as well as liquid. Can you/do you know if we can put the tussah in the water part to incorporate?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 6 лет назад
You'll need a hydrolyzed silk-liquid should work, but tussah definitely does not. Hydrolyzed silk has been modified to be water soluble, and tussah silk is stubbornly not water soluble in my experience! You can also look for hydrolyzed silk in powder form in different mesh sizes-powdered, peptides, and amino acids :)

Dear Marie, Hi Marie, Can I substitute olive derived emulsifying wax (cetearyl-olivate, and sorbitan olivate) instead of btms 50 in all your recipes?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 7 лет назад
No-BTMS-50 is conditioning, which is why we typically use it in things like conditioners. Olivem1000 isn't, so it is lacking a core reason we use BTMS-50.

@sybelle_esta_no_telhado_ad5040
Hello there! I havent yet made a conditioner; I do enjoy your videos and find them quite informative. In my area, I can only find behentrimonium methosulfate. It doesn't specify as to whether it's 50 or 25 (or perhaps something else). Could I use that?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 5 лет назад
Hey! If it's pure behentrimonium methosulfate it is neither 50 or 25-those numbers indicate the concentration of behentrimonium methosulfate in a blended product :) For 50 you'd use half the amount of pure behentrimonium methosulfate, but you'll also need to replace the thickener (cetyl alcohol). BTMS-50 also contains Butylene Glycol. We know the behentrimonium methosulfate is 50% of the blend, and the amounts of cetyl alcohol and Butylene Glycol add up to the other 50%, but the maker doesn't disclose how much of those last two ingredients, so you will likely need to do a bit of experimenting :) Happy making!
@sybelle_esta_no_telhado_ad5040
@@HumblebeeAndMe Oh, bummer. The stuff I found apparently has no butylene glicol. It's composed only of BEHENYL TRIMONIUM METHOSULFATE (AND) CETEARYL ALCOHOL. Do I need to add the butylene glicol separately or replace it with a similar ingredient? Thank you for the explanation on the BTMS!( I have been wondering about it for a while.)

Marie i was just at WP yesterday and looked at the aloe powder and totally didnt get any lol can i make an infusion of sorts from real aloe with the water phase? Should i bump the germall to 1% if i do that? And can i use FO instead of EOs?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 7 лет назад
Sadly using fresh aloe is going to create a mess of bacterial temptation and will spoil so darn fast :( You definitely don't want to use double the maximum amount of your preservative (that creates other safety concerns)-just don't use fresh aloe. And yes, you can use FOs instead :)

It's one less variable; distilled water is just water, minus minerals and other things that can be present in tap water. That said, I've got good tap water and have used it in recipes before, and it's been fine. I certainly wouldn't sell anything made that way, but in a pinch it has worked for me.
