How to make DIY SOFUBI molds using silicone and metal. (CHEAP, FAST, REUSABLE)

This video shows how to make SOFUBI molds much cheaper and quicker than going the overseas route. This is not to take away from metal molds - they are the STANDARD, they hold up, they have been tried and have proven true - but the ability to make our own molds for plastisol / soft vinyl is very exciting!

**** Please practice personal safety precautions when handling or heating plastisol! ****
NOTES:
- For larger vinyl figures and parts, consider either a stiffer silicone or a rigid support shell.
- There is some evidence that ALUMINUM powder may work (even better?) than copper powder.
- I'm using an oven because it's what I have, but an oven is probably not as efficient as a hot chemical or oil bath.

I originally found your channel trying to find home made diy sofubi videos a few years ago. I loved all the faux-fubi videos but I thought we knew everything we could about soft vinyl casting. It was just out of reach to do yourself or at home. But now with all the groundwork you’ve put in I can’t stop thinking of all the possibilities. Thanks for pushing the boundaries and changing the game. Very inspiring to see some change in the sofubi world.

When I see videos like this I wonder "Is Craftsman revolutionizing decades old toy-crafting in his shop?" and I'd like to think the answer is "Yes!" and that some Sofubi manufacturers are seeing this and saying "We can make them faster AND cheaper?!" Excellent work, as usual! Hoping to see more content, but as always make sure you're healthy and safe first!

I love the crafsman. Sure I enjoy watching a few vlog channels and an occasional History channel throwback to when they did history videos but there is nothing better than seeing someone create something, with the crafsman you get the added bonus of being able to buy some of his creations, got me the orange with grey face and the black with orange face pocketnauts. My daughter saw them on my wall and said "Dad, can I play with one?" and as a collector in my head I don't wanna do it because I do enjoy looking at them but as a father my heart melted from her voice and overcame my collector side and I gave her the orange one to play with. Nothing makes me come to the brink of crying like hearing the words "daddy, do you wanna play toys with me?" yes child, I do and I thank god everyday I get to do it and thank you crafsman, she loves pocketnaut

I want to say, I very much appreciate the work that goes into these videos. As someone who LOVES toys but has no experience with crafting of the caliber that is covered here, for someone like me, you still make your videos so enjoyable to watch. Thank you for showing me a glimpse into the hard work that goes into what you do, CrafsMan. Much love to you, and to all the many people that make it possible for you to do what you do.

I always forget that you are a toy maker as well. This channel is mostly a DIY tip channel or a technique helper channel but you are also selling your toys on the side. Or maybe it's a main source of income and YT turned into the side, I don't know. I love what you are doing, it's so calm and soothing to watch you work even thought I have 0 interest in making SOFUBI figures myself.

Have you looked into doing the electroplating for the molds yourself? it's relatively straightforward now, and you would need a much more flexible material to cast in it since you have a rigid mold. But that could be an interesting video series.

1:1:1 ratio by volume? weight? I worked as a silicone mold maker at a shop where we used platinum cure silicone(it came right out of a tap on a machine!). To get stronger molds we would do one coat of silicone, put the part in an oven to cure it, then take it out and do another coat, return it to the oven and eventually build up 3 or more coats on it. Then we would demold the silicone part by using compressed air between the mold and part. The part would often fly across the shop during this process but the mold and part were no worse for wear. We used resin casts and not 3d printed parts as our mold masters however. Anyways, maybe some of this info helps!

Super neat. I think the burning is also happening because the silicone is too thin at those areas, which are “high points” when you’re painting on the mold. I wonder if you could do a matrix mold with these!

This is an absolutely amazing revelation. I personally cant wait to get started on working on a few of my own. Though I'll ask, when you pour the plastisol in, you then stick the still hot mold in a vacuum chamber to remove the bubbles correct? Make sure the liquid gets into all the crevices?
