Yesss I use this method for the ends of my braids! I don't want to use a shitton of tiny rubber bands so I lock the ends of my braids with the twist & rip, works perfectly :)

I've been over thinking dreads for a long time. A lot of videos you see talk about how the roots need to be super tight, the ends should be tight, etc. I unfortunately brushed out my first set of dreads for fear of them 'not being right'. Thank you for your videos, they're very informative.
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 лет назад
They tighten over time :) they're no instant thing. The best thing to do is just not worry and let them do their thing. Hair knots whether you want it to or not... which is annoying for people with regular long hair - great for dreadheads :)

I just want to say thanks for all your great videos. I have learned so many new things about dreadlocks. On Tuesday I get my hair divided into sections by a hairdresser and then I'll go myself in the process of making dreadlocks throughout my long hair. Thanks to you I will not commit any silly mistakes as others try to lure me into. You do it all so simple and I am looking forward to get dreadlocks for the first time in my 41 years old life. Talk about a throw back. I remember a few yrs ago when I decided to do my dreads and did MASSIVE research and found ur channel on RU-vid and decided twist and rip was how I wanted to go. However I twisted tighter and ripped harder to the point to where after I was finished with one section, my scalp was indeed very tender. Took me about 2.5 weeks to do it all. I did every part of the process on my own. I'm finiky when it comes to my hair. I can only be mad at myself if I don't do it correctly.

I just looked up this video for a friend. i have had dreads before, but only a few. i never did go with a full head of dreads... anyway i really wish i watched THIS video before doing them. it's very descriptive.. fantastic vid! I will do them again (as soon as that hair grows back, i cut them out) but, i do have one question.. how do you prevent dreads from locking up all funky like? when i did mine, they decided they were going to kind of merge together at the top and make kind of a fork. did i go to far from the root, or was i washing them wrong? i must have messed up somewhere.

so i made two dreads with the T&R method,and it was quite good. I mean i tried the backcomb method but the knots where not that strong and weak.With the T&R method there where strong and it didn't shrink my hair at all.Well okay i know that it needs more time for the dreads to tighten and shrink.So i'd say the T&R method work quite good.Should I keep using this method or should i use the Backcomb method?

@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 10 лет назад
You can twist as little, and rip as much as you like, in the long run it's not going to make a lot of difference. With T&R you are not trying to create a tight, finished lock, you're holding the section together and it only needs to be sufficiently knotted so that it does not fall out before it starts to tighten on it's own. Provided the lock is knotted enough to not wash out, it makes little difference how 'tight' it actually is early on. If in an extreme case you force the lock super tight and force it to stay tight, well then it'll look like a twist and ripped dreadlock forever, rather than being able to relax up and mature to then look like mature lock.

problem here with locks. I ripped and twisted locks a little bigger than the ones in your video. 5 months later my locks feel stiff when dry, and don't lay down. they sit up in the air. the parts were done square by a licensed professional. why isn't my hair laying down and sitting outward? I don't palm roll, could that be the reason. my hair also looks like thick ropes, not a single thick Strand of hair like one of your locks do. what can I do to get them lay down and fall like yours. they do when wet but when dry they don't. could it be there is still gel in your hair from 3 months ago though it was washed thoroughly several twice til none came out. thank u for all your help

+Lazy Dreads you definitely do a great job at it :) I also have a question about twist and rip actually.Like when doing so you have to make it really tight at the root? Because I see so many people doing different things with it,where some do it so tight that it hurts their head and they stick out more that way too.but then they say the dreads get loose so they have to make them really tight.I read somewhere though that making it too tight could cause breakage and the dread to fall off or there will be bald spots.so by that I am a bit worried.there was a video where I saw this girl make sure she left a bit of a gap between her scalp and the beginning of her hair when making the dread,but I'm not sure if that would last or not.in this video you don't seem to be doing them uncomfortably tight either,but with a good amount of tight.
@LazyDreads
@LazyDreads 9 лет назад
It's not so much about tightness, but more how many knots overall that you manage to get in. Twist & Rip only serves to hold the hair in sections - it doesn't actually make finished dreadlocks. It will take months for those knotted sections to lock into finished dreadlocks. Basically you just need to make sure that you're able to create enough knots to make sure that they don't just fall apart and wash out. Obviously the tighter they are, the less likely they are to wash out, but it's not imperative that they're painfully tight, just so long as they're 'tight enough'.

I've been using this method but using the flea comb just to push the knots up tighter every inch or so. I stick it into the mat where it feels too loose and push the knots upward toward the good knotted matted area. I hope i don't regret that. Also I notice you're leaving like 2 inches of space or more at the top. Do I need that much room? I've got about that much room but I've put a rubber band at the top where it felt too loose. Bad idea? It's close to my skull but not squeezed tight against it- maybe a centimeter ish of room between band and skull
