Our process for making swarm traps out of scrap lumber.
The cavity is actually closer to 50 liters, not 40, but seems to work well for us anyway.

This is a great and very sturdy design. I cannot wait to make a few. If you dont have a dado blade or a router to make the notch in the trap mounting bar you can always screw a scrap block of wood to the bar too. Just keep it low profile so the lid clears. Thanks for the great info.

Great Design! Please consider using a router for your dado cuts. 2:08 -No reason to have your fingers that close to the blade. Best of luck this swarm season!

I like it. The only drawback I can see is the need for four hands to remove the swarm box once filled with bees. I can work with that though. Well done gentlemen! Thank you for your good work and sharing your box plans.

It's possible with one person. Clunky but doable

Going to make 3 or 4 of these this weekend to place out the following week. Love the design will let you know how they work here in Virginia.

Great! If you're making multiple, consider alternating which side the mounting bar is on so you can accommodate different trees more easily.

Cool design. I made a swarm trap late last year (my first year beekeeping), but I didn't catch anything. Question: Once you catch a swarm, do you treat for varroa fairly quickly, before they have a chance to cap a lot of brood?
@HiddenSpringApiaries
@HiddenSpringApiaries 3 года назад
Mark, we are treatment-free beekeepers, so we don't treat them at all. If they came from a tree in the woods, they are used to not being treated already. Wild swarms can be great sources of new genetics that can handle no treatments.

Something I’m doing now for inner covers or in place of that plastic on the top is 18 oz. Duck Cloth (Canvas). I first saw it in the University of Guelph beekeeping videos. It’s more economical; and of course the less plastic the better IMO.

This is double bubble insulation - its primary purpose here is a crush layer to seal as many gaps as possible. Duck cloth wouldn't have the same effect

I have old deeps. Just put a bottom on it and drill an entrance hole secure lid w hinges? Thx. Fascinating vids!
@HiddenSpringApiaries
@HiddenSpringApiaries Год назад
That's a great option. The only issue is the cavity size is a bit small, and the frames in the box can slow down the bees while they try to move in, causing lost swarms. Ideally you would add a completely empty medium or shallow on the bottom (or just a spacer a few inches tall) to increase the cavity size and allow them to pile in faster.

Measurement of depth? I could just add pieces to deeps to get preferred depth of over all boxes. I’m near Chicago. When would you suggest setting up swarm boxed? Thx guys!
@HiddenSpringApiaries

We use 1x12 material, so 11.5 overall depth. We put our traps out early, the first swarms tend to be the best. In our area of South Central PA, we hang them in early April

Nice design I’m going to tackle a few of these, however you didn’t mention anything about the metal you used for your lid?
@HiddenSpringApiaries
@HiddenSpringApiaries Год назад
It's 16 3/8 x 20 with a 3/8 lip on the long sides

@@HiddenSpringApiaries What kind of metal and what gauge did you use for the tops? This seems like a great design, thank you so much for being willing to share it!

It's 29ga galvanized. 26ga works too

Do you find that it makes a difference which wall you put the entrance in?
@HiddenSpringApiaries
@HiddenSpringApiaries 2 года назад
We alternate which side the mounting bar is on so we can more easily accommodate different trees - the entrance should be pointed into a clear area and not back into the woods for best results.
@gordondean1782
@gordondean1782 2 года назад
@@HiddenSpringApiaries Thanks but that didn't answer my question. It looks like you put the entrance in a lower corner on the short side. I was asking if it mattered if you put it on the wider side - facing directly away from the tree?
@HiddenSpringApiaries
@HiddenSpringApiaries 2 года назад
We haven't tried that but there's a very low chance it would affect the catch rate of the trap.
@cherylcogossi850

Do you put frames inside of box?
@HiddenSpringApiaries

Yes, it takes 10 standard deep frames

Nice trap. And problem with unwanted bees likes wasp or hornets building inside.
@HiddenSpringApiaries
@HiddenSpringApiaries 2 года назад
We get wasps occasionally, but not too often. The space is larger than they like

@gordondean1782
@gordondean1782 2 года назад
Instead of using new wood, why not use old deeps?
@HiddenSpringApiaries
@HiddenSpringApiaries 2 года назад
We don't have any old deeps to rotate out yet, but they would work well too. Another reason is these traps are a few inches deeper than a standard deep so that there's plenty of free space below the frames to allow for a quick move-in.
@gordondean1782
@gordondean1782 2 года назад
@@HiddenSpringApiaries You could solve that issue by cutting another old deep into 3 or possibly 4 sections and tack it onto the bottom or top of your main deep. Good use of old boxes. Nice design.
@HiddenSpringApiaries
@HiddenSpringApiaries 2 года назад
I agree that would work well

I am sorry to say that your music on your videos are just a little bit loud! If you don’t mind tone it down a bit. On the other hand your videos are good.
